It was undoubtedly Northwes-tern's finest performance of the campaign as Coach Glenn Gos-sett's Demons won their fourth straight and finished the season with a respectable 7-2 slate. Northwestern grabbed second place in the GSC as it closed league action with a 4-1 mark, Southeastern, which dropped a one-point decision to Louisiana Tech here two weeks ago, closed out its loop action at 2-3 and 5-5 for the season. Pool, the 165-pound junior signal caller from Bossier City Airline, scooted his way for 147 yards on 22 carries. His total broke the old single game school standard set by teammate Vic Nyvall in 1967 against Southwes tern. Sophomore kicking specialist Dennis Wilkinson placed his name in the GSC record books with a season total of 32 extra points.

The old mark of 29 was jointly held by NSC's Malcolm (Deacon) Lewis (1966) and Mc-Neese's Roy Price (1952). Wilkin son also tied the NSC mark of most field goals in a season (6), held by Wayne Walker (1965). As a team, Northwestern became the best running team in the school's history. The Demons finished the season with 2,435 yards, breaking the record by the 67 team. The win gave the Demons their finest season since '66 and it was Gossett's best record since he took over the reins.

Gossett's '67 team had a 6-3 record and last year Northwestern was 5-4. Amazingly enough, the Demons powered their way for 357 yards on the ground against Southeastern, the league's best at defending the run. Northwestern's hard-hitting defense was keyed by linebacker Lester Latino, tackle Mike Burrow and cornerback Kenny Cal-lens. Callens picked off two passes and recovered one fumble, Latino had one interception and Burrow was a mainstay in the Lion backfield all evening.
