The session seemed to draw the most "oohs" and "ahhs," as students donned rubber boots and trudged through a pond at the camp to collect water samples and see what types of slimy organisms they could find. Amanda Arnold didn't hesitate digging right in, sifting through the mud to pull out every tiny bug she could find. "We've learned about how we should keep our water safe because we have to drink it," Amanda said, shaking the mud off her hands.

"I don't mind getting dirty. You know, I might go into this one day." During the East Texas Foresters session, students sectioned off 10 meter by 10 meter sections of land and mapped what was inside. Chambers said the students learned how to use a global positioning system, as well as how to plot items on the and Yaxis. Students also measured the circumference of trees and took soil temperatures. Sectioning off the land was harder than some students had expected.

I "Our measurements were way off," Julie Lockhart said, as she watched her fellow classmates pull a stake out of the ground and start over. "But this is fun. I like the challenges." Her only regret? That the plot of land they chose to map was full of poison ivy. No students seemed to be scratching much, though. Hudson PEP Principal Bonnie Bogue said her campus was honored to be a part of the program.

"The children will no doubt learn things here that they will never forget," Bogue said. "We want this to be an annual event." Certified teachers deliver education programs, and faculty work with classroom teachers to develop a curriculum that will enhance students' classroom learning. Professors from the University of Texas at Tyler participate in the program, and the camp provides several graduate students from the university with room and board while they conduct ecological and biological research. The Camp Tyler Outdoor School won the 1999 Environmental Protection Agency Award of Excellence in Environmental Education.

Finances played into the decision to expand access to the camp this year. The decision means the camp now will be cheaper per child. Koukl said they wanted to make sure the camp remains available to East Texas students for many years. The camp's services now includes public and private schools in the Region VII Education Service Center, as well as those within an hour's drive from Regions Vm and X. "We are tickled to death that this is happening," said Jim Connally, director of the Tyler ISD Outdoor Learning Center.

"This is an incredible program that has just a fantastic amount of magic that goes with it" Connally said the decision to open the camp couldn't have come at a better time for East Texas school districts. "Next spring, science will be tested in the fifth-grade," Connally said, referring to the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills. "And the Texas Education -Agency announced that it's not science unless 40 percent of it is done in the lab or field experience." Hands-on learning Hudson PEP students got plenty of that on Thursday, In addition to playing aquatic biologists for a session, the students also became East Texas foresters and learned how to read mapcompass directions. "We emphasize the three C's here," said Larry Chambers, the education program director at Camp Tyler. "Communication, cooperation and commitment." In orienteering, students learned the value of the first two C's.

The orienteering session required students to follow a set of directions and to use a compass to find their way around the camp. One group, still struggling to learn how to work together, took three wrong turns in less than five minutes at one point even walking straight through a dense part of the forest in an attempt to follow the directions to the letter. But making mistakes is part of the point of the exercise, Chambers said. "Failure is one of the greatest learningteaching tools," Chambers said. "We allow the students to solve their own problems, helping them of course before they get too frustrated.

We like to do things in such a way that we are pulling them along, not pushing them."
