longview News-Journal Sunday, September 8, 2002 INSIDE: AGRICULTURE isa OBITUARIES 18A 13A Gladewater Veterans War Memorial unveiled mm By JAMES DRAPER Staff writer GLADEWATER Threatening skies couldn't break the spirits of hundreds of veterans, their families and friends at the unveiling and dedication of the Veterans War Memorial on Pacific Street in Gladewater. Flags lined the streets and storefronts of downtown Gladewater pn Saturday as well as the lapels and hats ofthemorethan 200 veterans honored at the ceremony. "We are so thankful for the sacrifice you have made to our community and our country," said John Paul Tallent, Gladewater mayor. "I urge all citizens to reflect on the honorable and noble sacrifices these men and women made." Tallent described how the memorial, erected by the Gladewater Former Students Associa tion, is made from black African granite and inscribed with more than 2,000 names of Gladewater soldiers who served from as far back as the Spanish-American War to the Gulf War. According to Tallent, each of the monuments covered with names is 6 feet wide, 6 feet tall and 8 inches thick, and weighs 5,800 pounds.

The dedication piece weighs 1,800 pounds. David Knotts, World War II veteran, shared his experiences and memories at the ceremony. Tears came to his eyes as he described the heroic actions of his friends and fellow soldiers. "We have gathered here today to remember," Knotts said. "To remember love, to remember sacrifice; many of them gave up their tomorrow that we may enjoy today in peace." Knotts spoke of the many Gladewater residents who signed up to enter the armed forces, leaving their family and friends to serve their country.

"All of the names inscribed here belong to hundreds of Americans who were willing to make the extreme sacrifice," he said. The Rev. Ellis Hayden gave the benediction at the ceremony, urging everyone not to forget the sacrifices the veterans made. "Lord, we honor and pay tribute to them this day," he said, "Help us not to forget what they fought for, the price they paid that we might have peace and liberty this day." According to Tallent, more than 800 people came to the ceremony. He said he was amazed by the turnout and had never seen one like it.

Gladewater High School art teacher Brenda Kelley and her students painted a mural of Gladewater heritage on the wall beside the memorial. The Gladewater High School band and choir also performed patriotic music at the event.
