QUESTION 7 :1 have come into possession of a picture that has been a subject of dispute recently.

The enclosed photo shows a colorful old patriotic picture that has been in the family for over a half century. Could it be of any value? The size of the picture itself is 24x30 inches, but with frame, it measures 33x44 inches. The background is dark blue silk on which an eagle, flags, etc. are em- broidered directly onto the cloth and sewed to the back of an old newspaper which covers the back completely. The date on the newspaper is May, 1901.

Recently I was offered a small amount for this framed silk picture, but my family said they thought it could be of considerable value. Can YOU tell me if it is? Mrs. J.A. McL. ANSWER: Your fancy piece of handiwork is valuable and certainly of much interest to collectors.

I would estimate it to be worth approximately $100. years old. What would such a fine old mirror be worth today? Mrs. V. E.

ANSWER: Mirrors like you describe are selling around nowadays. QUESTION: 1 am in the process of stripping a very old pine chest of drawers which has veneer fronts. Because of its interesting style I think it was made during the early years of the American Empire period since the chest is not bulky a i more of primitive look I thought the piece to be well worth refinishing. My problem is that I am a i i i removing portions of the veneer on the drawer fronts. I have even used three different brands of stripper.

Have you a suggestion? R.E. Jr. ANSWER: We have found that veneer can be removed easily after a good soaking in warm water. QUESTION: One of the finer pieces I inherited recently is a benchbed, that has never been refinished. It is pine, having a dull red finish, and has been assembled with wooden pegs which have never been cut off on the underside.

This piece of furniture is 6 feet in length, is 34 inches high and 24 inches wide. The bed portion fits snugly under the seat, and by pulling a it pulls outward, resembling a shallow box. Two legs balance the front of the bed. My parents bought this old piece back in the late 1930s, giving $25 for it at the time. It was appraised last year for $350, From my crude enclosed sketch of this fine old piece, can you tell me its vintage? Miss A.E.

ANSWER: Your slat-back and spindle bench-bed dates around the first quarter of the last century. Such examples are a rarity. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Fossen of El Jebel, are parents of a son, Brady John, born yesterday.

This is their first child. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Paul Frees of Fergus Falls Route 3 and Mr. and Mrs.

at the Peter Lein home (formerly the Thorolf I-ein home). a cuckold and old kook By Abigail Van Buren 1173 Di CH.CJM TnboM-N. Y. News Inc. DEAR ABBY: 1 wrile a syndicated newspaper column titled "Bernstein on Words." Recently 1 received the follow- ing letter: "Dear Mr.

Bernstein: While celebrating my 45th wedding anniversary, I recalled that 40 years ago my wife had an affair with an- other man. My question: Was I. or am 1 a cuckold?" Abby, all that came to my mind was that juvenile jingle. "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuek could chuck wood," with a variation something like, "Just how old is an olden cluck when an olden cuck- old's he?" However, since this question seems much more up your alley than mine, how would you answer it? TED CONSULTING EDITOR, NEW YORK TIMES Grace United Methodist Church will have its third an- nual "Walk Into Advent" this Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the church.

Crochet Glamor QUESTION: We have just learned that reproduced butter prints exist and would like to know the patterns if you have access to this information. We made this discover)' at a recent antique show here, but the dealer was selling the prints as new. The a was Geometric.

Could there be others? Mrs. C.T.S. ANSWER: 1 know of only five other patterns being marketed and they are: Cow, Eagle, Wheat, Heart and Acorn each 4 inches in diameter. It will he of interest to include that new 5'z inch-high butter molds are also available showing a well-carved Daisy, Swan, Tree. Bird, Pineapple and a Wheat design.

QUESTION: I think I have a very nice old Victorian beveled mirror with a 3-inch gold-leafed frame. The mirror itself is just 40 inches long and oval in shape. Both frame and mirror are in av, fully good shape considering they are 80 some QUESTION: I would ap- preciate your comments on the price of a nice old table lamp we have, signed RAINAUD. It is 22 inches tall, with a pierced metal shade that has 7 bent glass panes. It is wired for two light bulbs.

Since this lamp is in good working condition and the glass panes are still in one piece, how valuable is it? Have you any information where the lamp came from? N.C. ANSWER: The H. E. Rainaud Company appeared in Meriden, directories from 1916 until 1932. The firm manufactured metalwares primarily lamps composed of metal bases and metal and glass shades.

Today, Rainaud lamps like yours are selling in the $200 price range. a welcomes questions from readers and those of general interest will be answered in the column as space permits. If she had another one, he's a cuckold for sure. If she's had them off and on over the years, he's not a cuckold--quite the reverse. He's an old kook! DEAR ABBY: My problem is nothing new.

It's my mother in law. My husband and I are the proud parents of a new baby, and 1 have returned to work part-time. Since we didn't know a reliable sitter, I asked my mother in law if she would babysit while I worked half days, and 1 offered to pay her. To my surprise, she accepted! Abby, most grandmothers would be insulted if they were offered money to stay with tlieir grandchildren. This is her first grandchild.

My husband and I have been fighting about this ever since it came up, and he says I am wrong--and if I don't feel right handing his mother money, I should just stick it in her purse and not make a big deal out of it. Abby, do you think I'm wrong? 1 wonder just how many grandmothers accept money for taking care of their grandchildren? WORKING MOTHER DEAK MOTIIKR: You failed to mention an important factor. How well off is your molhcr in law? If she must work in order to support herself, obviously she can't afford to sit gratis. In any case, you'd have to pay another sitter, so why gripe? DEAR ABBY: My husband is a chaser. I knew it when I married him.

but nobody's perfect, and besides he has a lot going for him. For instance, he's a good provider and he's not stingy with his money. And he's also a wonderful father to our seven children, he's devout in his religion, and hasn't misled mass in 13 years, no matter how hung over he was. His last fling was with a girl who used to call here and try to disguise her voice, but 1 always knew it was her. She'd say it was a "business call." Once this girl called and talked to ME.

She said she was in love with my husband and he was in love with her. ami she asked me why I didn't give him up. I told her I'd give him up. but she'd have to take our seven kids, their ages are 2. 3.
