By Robert Morgan Town Talk Staff Writer Officials of Catahoula, Concordia and LaSalle parishes were notified Thursday evening Gov. Edwin Edwards had declared a state of emergency exists in those parishes, which are threatened with heavy flooding. The declaration will provide added impetus to efforts to gain federal assistance for food, shelter, clothing and other relief for flood victims in those areas.

Officials said today, however, they are not certain at this point just what aid will immediately be made available to them. Emmett Book, secretary-treasurer of the Catahoula Parish Police Jury, said he will contact the local Red Cross coordinator today to determine what assistance that agency can provide. In LaSalle Parish, jury secretary. treasurer Ray Johnson said the immediate need there is for housing for displaced families. "We've got several families that are boating out and looking for housing.

That's one problem we have is available housing," said Johnson. In addition to people trapped in the area because of insufficient housing, Johnson said other families have moved from the devastated areas around Catahoula Lake. Johnson added, the hardest hit parts of the parish are in the east and southeast, near the lake. "I'm going to call the governor today to find out what this disaster declaration will do. Hopefully it will alleviate some of the problems that these people are having," Johnson said.

Meanwhile in Catahoula Parish, residents of Larto who have been living on the Catahoula Lake Diversion Canal levee are still hoping to get a freshwater well in operation by next week. The well water has to be tested by state health officials before the well, which was, finished day, can be put into operation. Larto flood victims have had water tanked in for drinking and cooking purposes. In the Sandy Lake area where floodwaters are expected to rise next, families have reportedly started moving out. A deputy for the Catahoula Parish sheriff's office said 10 or 15 mobile homes were moved from the area Thursday and efforts to get cattle to higher ground continued.

For the third straight day, Black River at the Jonesville and Dam rose two of a 53.3 Lock, feet. The predicted crest is 54.5, twotenths of a foot higher than the 1975 flood level. While the immediate relief being sought is for parish people, both Book and Johnson said they hope to get assistance for road repairs after flood waters recede. Johnson said there were several miles of road in LaSalle which will have to be repaired, some of which have been completedly cut Also, Johnson said aid may.b needed for farmers after the water falls. An estimated 15,000 acres- land are under now Johnson said, water, not exactly sure just what assistance we need.
