ALEXANDRIA DAILY TOWN TALK, ALEXANDRIA-PINEVILLE, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10. 1974 SECTION' PAGE TWO Barnette, Strong Lead Rout BC Didn't Help Tulane Headache Mclntyre's Run Leads Auburn Past Maroons By James Saggus JACKSON, Miss. (AP)-Fullback Secdrick Mclntyrc exploded for a 54-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give fifth-ranked Auburn a 2420 Southeastern Conference football victory over a Mississippi State team that wouldn't stay dead Saturday. Auburn, capitalizing on big plays in the first half, took a 17-point lead before State's Bulldogs could regroup and carry the offensive battle to Auburn's door after intermission. Mclntyre's winning touchdown burst through the middle of the State defenses came just after the Bulldogs got their first tally and it proved score.

Tulane battled gamely after that but it was all over and BC proved too tough. Barnette's longest gainer was 32 yards, a bull-like rush in which he overpowered tacklers. Strong's longest run was 20 yards. The two virtually alternated in taking cracks at the Tulane line, often going over AI Krevis, an outstanding offensive tackle. Americans Could Get Eviction Notice BIRMINGHAM, Ala.

(AP) The Birmingham Americans of the World Football League owe Jefferson County more than $14,000 in taxes, and if the team doesn't pay, it may not play its last home game of the regular season. County Director of Revenue James Healey said the team owes $14,325.61 in sales taxes, including interest and penalty. Late last week, Healey asked County Atty. John Foster to seek a temporary injunction against the team playing in Birmingham unless the debt is paid. Foster said late Friday he met with team representatives who agreed to pay the outstanding amount by Tuesday, one day before the Americans' last home game of the regular season against the Shreveport Steamer.

There are also reports that the club owes $90,000 to the state and another $14,000 to the City of Birmingham in taxes. Attendance has been sagging at the last few home games. The announced at-tendence at the Americans' last game, against the Phila-delphia Bell, was 22,963. NEW IN TOWN? touchdown dive by Strong late in the second period as Boston College took a 17-0 lead. Steinfort, who has kicked four field goals of 50 yards or more this season, hit on his 55-yarder late in the third period.

A pass interception stopped a Tulane drive to the Boston College 17 just before Steinfort's long kick. Strong ended a short march with a four-yard scoring run in the fourth period. He was set up when a planned field goal attempt by Steinfort went awry because of a high centering snap. Kruczek stood up and flipped a pass to Barnette, who sprinted 25 yards to the Tulane nine. Strong carried twice for the touchdown.

The victory boosted BC's record to 5-3. The loss was Tulane's third in a row after five consecutive victories. The Eagles piled up 363 yards on the ground and added another 65 as Kruczek completed seven of nine passes. Little Success The Green Wave, unable to run against BC, was forced to try the air but had little success. Quarterback Terry Looney completed just four of 15 passes and was sacked five times before being replaced by Buddy Gilbert in the fourth period.

Tulane was hurt by the loss of veteran quarterback Steve Foley, who suffered a broken leg two weeks ago. Foley led the Green Wave victories over the Eagles the last two years. Trailing 10-0 in the second period, Tulane threatened to get back into the game by rolling from its 20 to inches shy of a first down at the BC 28. However, on fourth down, the Green Wave was penalized for illegal procedure and Looney then was sacked back on the 40 by Alex Ma- By Dave O'Hara NEWTON, Mass. (AP) -Keith Barnette and Earl Strong punished Tulane's defense with bruising runs, and Fred Steinfort booted a pair of field goals Saturday as Boston College jolted the Green Waves' post-season bowl hopes with a 27-3 football victory.

Barnette carried 25 times for 156 yards and one touchdown while Strong cracked the line 31 times for 145 yards and two TDs. Steinfort, a junior, booted field goals of 20 and 55 yards. He had another bid from 44 yards, which hit high on the goal post and bounced back. Tulane Frustrated Boston College's tough defense frustrated Tulane virtually all of the way. Tulane's ly score was a 35-yard field goal by David Fal-goust midway through the third period after David Klein intercepted a Boston College pass and returned the ball 50 yards.

The Eagles, winning their third game in a row, moved 58 yards in 14 plays for a first-period touchdown. Barnette carried eight times in the drive, which he capped with a one-yard run. Barnette, a senior fullback, carried seven times for 53 yards in setting up Steinfort's short field goal in the second period. The loss almost certainly eliminated Texas' hopes for a seventh consecutive SWC championship and also dampened a possible alternative bid for the Longhorns from the Gator Bowl. Shop the Classified Ads For A New Home Bv Jack Keever WACO, Tex (AP) Baylor wiped out 18 years of bitter frustration Saturday as quarterback Neal Jeffrey pierced the Texas secondary for two touchdown passes and ran for another score in a 34-24 Southwest Conference football victory. Baylor's first victory over Texas since 1956 gives the Bears a shot at their first SWC title in 50 years and their first trip to the Cotton Bowl, which was started as a post-season classic in 1937.

Twelfth-ranked Texas led 24-7 when a host of Baylor defenders led by linebacker Johnny Greene blocked Mike Dean's punt and Johnny Slaughter recovered at the Texas 17 early in the third quarter. A five-yard penalty gave Baylor a crucial first down after the Longhorns had apparently stopped Steve Beaird short of a first down. Jeffrey scored on fourth down on a one-yard run. DO YOU KNOW Mclntyre a sophomore with deceptive bursts of powergot Auburn's first touchdown on a one-yard slice in the first quarter, set up by a 60-yard sprint by tailback Rick N'eel. A big run also provided Auburn with its other touchdowna 52-yard punt return by Mike Fuller after State had shut off a Tiger drive on the Bulldog one.

A 41-yard field goal by Greg Giilis was sandwiched between the two jaunts. After intermission, the offensive advantage swung to the Bulldogs, as quarterback Rocky Felker riddled Auburn's vaunted pass defense and got State's sweeps working. Felker started the State comeback with a 16-yard scoring pass to Stan Black on the Bulldogs' first possession of the third period. State added another touchdown in the third period on a nine-yard Felker pass to end Howard Lewis, and the final tally in the fourth on a 26-yard Felker pass to split end Melvin Barkum. Volunteers Pop Memphis By 34 to 6 KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

(AP) Quarterback Condredge Holloway broke Tennessee's all time total offense record Saturday as he led the Volunteers to a 34 to 6 football victory over Memphis State. Holloway completed 8 of 10 passes for 110 yards and one touchdown and added 29 rushing for 139 yards. This boosted his career total to yards, shattering Bobby Scott's record of 3,580 set in 1970. The triumph gave Tennessee a 4-3-1 mark and kept alive the Vol's slim hopes for their tenth consecutive bowl bid, possibly against Maryland in the Liberty Bowl at Memphis Dec. 16.

Holloway directed Tennessee to two touchdowns and two field goals before giving way to Randy Wallace in the third quarter. Wallace promptly took the Vol's 85 yards in 21 plays, consuming 10 minutes and 10 secoonds, with Stanley Morgan plunging from the one for his second touchdown. Morgan scored from the four for Tennessee's first touchdown and Holloway rifled a 14-yard pass to John Yarbrough for the second, both in the second period. Ricky Townsend kicked field goals of 36 and 43 yards. Tennessee's fourth six-pointer came after Greg Jones intercepted a pass on the Tiger 29 and sped to the eight.

Mike Gayles raced in from the two. Memphis State, which had averaged 22 points a game in eompling a 6-2 record, got its touchdown on a one-yard run by Jay Verna with 40 seconds remaining. (AP) University of Texas-Arlington took a 21-17 homecoming football victory over the University of Southwestern Louisiana Saturday, dropping USL to the Southland Conference cellar. It was an inauspicious omen when Rafael Septien booted his first three opening kickoffs out of bounds. His fourth was good, but UTA's Mike Wecker returned it 88 yards for a touchdown. Southwestern responded with a 17-play, 87-yard drive capped by Raymond Lation's eight yard scoring plunge, but Septien missed the extra point.

Arlington ran into kicking problems of its own in the second quarter when Gary Briscoe was forced to punt from his own end zone. The snap was low, the kick was shallow and USL linebacker Steve Hardin brought the ball back from the 13-yard line for a touchdown. On UTA's first play after the kickoff, however, quarterback Vic Morriss hurled a 73-yard scoring bomb to split end wronnie Barnett to tie the score. Midway through the second quarter, the Cajuns fumbled on their own 41 yard line and UTA recovered the ball. Eight plays later, fullback Derrick Jensen drove over from one yard out to score.

Septien added the only points in the second half, booting a 47-yard field goal, his tenth of the season to tie an SLC record for most field kicked in a season.
