Louisiana College's freshman team lost to Northeast at the foul line, too, 73-61. Although weakened by the loss of Reno and Schneider to the varsity, the Kittens outscored Northeast 22-21 from the field, but couldn't cope with the home team's 31-for-47 performance at the foul line. Ken Swenson paced LC with 25 points, two less than Lan-nie Philley made for hope by controlling the ball we can get them edgy and lead them into mistakes." Despite the youthfulness, the Cats gave Allgood excellent execution. There were enough mistakes to lose the game, though, particularly in the last three minutes of each half.

Cook and Reno built a 17-10 lead for LC in the first nine and one-half minutes, and led by six with 3:37 remaining in the half. Thereafter, Northeast sank five free throws to pull to within one point, 27-26, at intermission. first half prevented the Cats from building a comfortable lead. Sophomore Tommy Shoe-make, the 6-7 jumping-jack who still hasn't lived up to expectations, was the only LC player to foul out. But Schoening, Cook and Stan Beeson had four each, and Schneider three.

"We can't afford to let this team run on us or they will chase us out of the gym," said Allgood in explaining his game plan. "We are pretty young to try a control game, but it's our only chance. I After a Harris basket on the second half tip gave Northeast its second lead of the game, 28-27, Schoening went to work and, with help from Cook and Reno, kept LC ahead until with 13 minutes left the Indians gained the benefit of the one-plus-one foul rule. Still, with five minutes left it was 4745, but the Cats could get no closer. With the score 51-47 and 3:11 left, the Indians went into their freeze and were able to increase the margin on Wildcat gambles.

The Cats play William McCencfon vs. Devaney By Bill Carter (Town Talk Sports Editor) MONROE, La. Louisiana College's Wildcats had Faith in their freshmen and Hope in their game plan for Northeast. But Monday's game was in Monroe and Charity usually begins at home. The unbelievably young Cats are still winless, following a 57-49 loss to Northeast in a game that in no way reflected the score, but coach Billy Allgood was in a rare mood.

"Before tonight I was worried about this team winning games this season, but I'm no longer worried," said Allgood, who watched his club lead almost throughout and then lose despite outscoring the tall and talented Indians by eight points from the field. "They made me awfully proud of them," continued the coach, who seldom offers any words of praise after a loss, any loss. "There is no need to complain about the officiating, we're going to get that on the road and we might as well except it. Still, it was hard to chew on tonight." Seven Personals Northeast, with four regu Texas Still in Front LSU Now Fifth in AP Poll 28-17 for a 10-1 mark, plays Air Force in the Sugar Bowl and Charley McClendon wasn't the only football coach who got a new and better job in 1962. That same year Bob Devaney moved from Wyoming to Nebraska, where his career has been so successful that he has the best record in the nation.

McClendon and Devaney meet head-on for the very first time in the Orange Bowl on New Year's Night. It amounts to an introduction to a regular season series the two powers will begin in 1975 and complete in 1976. Charley Mac has built quite a record during his nine years at LSU, but Devaney had an even better one over the same span at Nebraska. As Nebraska's head coach Devaney has won 78 games, lost 18 and tied one. McClendon's record is 70-23-4.

Add Devaney's 35-10-4 mark at Wyoming and he has an overall 14-year record of 113-28-6, or .801. Devaney also has taken Nebraska to one more bowl than McClendon wrangled for LSU. But here Devaney's edge ends. He has won only three of seven post-season games, while Charley Mac has won five of six, including unbeaten Texas, Arkansas and Wyoming among his New Year's Day victims. Here's a season-by-season breakdown on the coaches at their present homa.

LSU's mauling of Mississippi dropped the Rebels from the Top Twenty for the first time all season. conceivably could wind up No. 1 if the three leaders all go down to defeat. AP Poll Michigan remained seventh, followed by Arizona State, Ar kansas down from fourth to that deadlock the Cornhuskers, in winning the Big Eight Conference title for the sixth time in nine years under Devaney, rolled over nine straight foes, receiving not one single test until the 28-21 win over Oklahoma in the season finale. In between Nebraska walloped Army 28-0, Minnesota 35-10, Missouri 21-7, Kansas 41-20, Oklahoma State 64-31, Colorado 39-13, Iowa State 54-29, Kansas State 51-13.

Through it all Nebraska compiled an average of 37.2 points a game. The Cornhuskers yielded on the average of 16.1 points a game, but most of those points came after Nebraska had the game in hand and reserves had taken over. STRONG RUNNING GAME Devaney always has a strong running game. His ace this season is a six-foot, 200-pounder named Joe Or-duna. He rushed for 834 yards this season and in his career scored 31 touchdowns.

Assisting Orduna is a 6-2, 200-pound junior, Jeff Kinney, who added 661 yards. Nebraska also has two capable quarterbacks in Jerry Tagge and Van Brownson, both of whom are rangy juniors. The 6-2, 215-pound Tagge broke the school record for career total of-fense (3,040 yards) with a year of eligibility remaining. This season he passed for 1,383 yards and 12 touchdowns. The 6-3 Brownson threw for 659 yards.

Two Cornhuskers have received All-America honors, linebacker Jerry Murtaugh, 6-3 and 215, and offensive guard Bob Newton, 6-4 and 248. A rundown on LSU and Nebraska results this season: LSU ninth and Auburn, which also was 10th last week. By Herschel Nissenson (Associated Press Sports Writer) Top-ranked Texas widened its margin over Ohio State today in the wake of that 42-7 pounding of Arkansas and Louisiana State climbed from eighth to fifth in The Associated Press college football poll by blasting Mississippi 61-17. The Texas Longhorns received 30 first-place votes and 850 points from a panel of 44 sports writers and broadcasters across the country who participated in the last regular season poll. The final vote will be taken after the bowl games.

Ohio State, which finished earlier with a 9-0 record Texas is 10-0 earned 10 first-place votes and 772 points while third-ranked Nebraska, 10-0-1, got two votes for first and 724 points. Arizona State, up from ninth to eighth after edging Arizona 10-6 for a 10-0 record, received the other two firskplace votes. The national championship, which Texas is defending, will be decided in the New Year's Day bowl games. The Indians had been charged with 39 personals in losses to Ole Miss and Delta State, but made only seven Monday night four in the first half, three in the second and none in the final eight minutes. Through the first 32 minutes, Northeast led only twice, both times by one point, and trailed by as much as seven points as LC controlled the game with a deliberate offense aimed at stopping the Indians' blistering running game. Baskets by Northeast's two 6-9 veterans, Bill Snellings and Henry Steele, broke a 41-41 tie with just under seven minutes left and the Indians were ahead to stay, protecting the lead with a deep freeze the final three minutes.

Taking good advantage of LC's 24 personal fouls, the Tribe converted 21 of 30 free throws, to five of eight for the Cats. LC was 22-of-45 from the floor, and Northeast, limited to just 37 field goal attempts, had 18. Northeast's official 31-23 advantage in rebounds was surprising. LC clearly won the board battle in the first half and appeared to match the Indians after intermission. Freshmen Deliver Allgood promoted freshmen Marv Reno (6-4) and Roy Schneider (5-11) to the first unit after his team was beaten 73-54 by Mississippi State in the season opener a week ago.

Both came through brilliantly against Northeast. Reno went route, scoring nine points and getting seven rebounds in addition to some strong defense. The Cornhuskers' only slip during the regular season was not considered a "slip" at the time. Many looked upon the 21-21 tie with Southern Cal in the second game of the season as a moral victory.

After all, Southern Cal had just massacred Alabama 42-21 the previous week and was regarded as a challenger for the national championship. As it turned out, it was a slip. Nebraska went on to become one of the nation's true powers, while the Trojans went into a tailspin until they got together for one last hurrah and stunned Notre Dame 38-28 in the finale.
