Georgia's other touchdowns came on a two yard run by Jimmy Poulos and a four-yard run by Donnie Allen, both in the first half.

Sullivan's four scoring passes also broke the SEC career mark of 50 held by Babe Parilli of Kentucky. Sullivan now has 53. The Bulldogs trimmed Auburn's lead to 21-20 with 11:46 remaining on a two-yard touchdown run by Andy Johnson following a fumble recovery at the Auburn 26. However, Roger Mitchell blocked Kim Braswell's extra point attempt to preserve the first two possessions as the Tigers jolted Georgia with an early 14-0 lead. Georgia defenders were clinging to Sullivan on his first two touchdown passes.

He hit on 14 of 24 passes for 288 yards with Beasley grabbing four for 130 yards and Schmalz five for 75. Auburn's point total was seven more than Georgia's powerful defense had yielded in its previous eight games. Johnson, a brilliant sophomore, led Georgia's ground game with 163 yards in 23 carries, one a 67-yard sprint to the Tiger two in the opening period to set up Georgia's first touchdown. Seemingly careful not to waste anything that might be needed against Notre Dame next week, LSU gradually wore down Mississippi State 28-3 here Saturday night to complete its Southeast Conference and road schedules. In breaking a two-game losing streak and scoring its first victory in this Mississippi capital city in nine years, LSU wound up with a 3-2 record in the conference it won last season and improved the overall mark to 6-3. Mississippi State was limited to seven first downs and 147 yards, and quarterback Billy Baker, who threw three touchdown passes against Auburn last week, could hit only four of 12 for 44 yards. Orange got Southern's first touchdown with 2:19 left in the half.

McDaniel gave Tech a 20-7 lead three minutes into the third period when he scored from three yards out. The TD gave the freshman 92 points this year, a school record. However, Southern began its comeback behind the passing combination of quarterback Rick Donegan and Steve Brous-sard who caught eight passes for 136 yards, all in the second half. The Southerners drove 74 yards to score with 7:47 left in the third period on Orange's two-yard plunge. Early in the fourth period, Ray Guy booted a 39-yard field goal to pull the visitors to within three points of Tech.

The Southerners took over at their own 25 with 3:26 left and drove for the winning touchdown in seven plays. Dantin ran the opening kickoff Stanford STANFORD, Calif. (UPI)-Larry Lloyd and Lawrence Brice scored the touchdowns but it was San Jose State's defense, anchored by Dave Chaney, and five missed field goal tries by Stanford's Rod Garcia that paved the way Saturday for the Spartans 13-12 victory over, the highly favored Indians. San Jose State took a 7-0 lead in the first half when Lloyd smashed over from the one after Stanford turned the ball over on a bad snap from center in a kicking situation. Indians punter Steve Murray tried to run the ball out of his own end zone and was hit by Chaney at the one.

Two plays later, Lloyd scored for a 7-0 lead. Rose Bowl bound Stanford appeared to have tied the score in the third quarter when Don Bunce connected on a 13-yard pass- to Don Alvarado but Garcia, who missed field goal tries, of 53, 43, 24, 32 and 20, booted wide of the goal posts on the extra-point try. Garcia, who came into the game with 14 field goals, had a chance to pull it out for the Indians with 17 seconds left after Bunce had taken Stanford from its own 30 to the San Jose 10. But the soccer-style kicker booted it wide and San Jose State fans poured onto the field as their Spartans pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year. Brown completed 15 of 19 passes for all the Irish aerial yardage.

Notre Dame, now winner of eight games in nine starts, will take its bowl hopes to Louisiana State University next Saturday. Scouts from four bowls have watched the Irish this year. The fine defensive performance by Tulane's Mullen added up to 12 solo tackles and 12 assists. Greg Marx figures in 21 Notre Dame tackles. Notre Dame, which had been parading as many as 14 ball carriers, used only five Saturday.

Cleszkowski was the leading ground gainer with 77 yards. Brown kept the ball 19 times for 66 yards and his two touchdowns. Tulane used eight different backs rushing and Ricky He-bert was the only consistent back to the State 35, from where the Tigers scored in five plays. Lyons made all but two of the yards, putting together three runs of seven yards each before scoring from the 13. A fake to Cantrelle set up the score, as Art attracted State's defense with his burst up the middle, and Paul was able to swing wide, get a block from Allen Shorey and then tightrope down the sidelines to score standing gainer with 69 yards in 17 carries.

Mike Walker completed only two of eight passes for 25 yards for the Green Wave' and Lachaussee hit 3 of 10 for 40 yards and the Tulane touchdown. The lone Tulane touchdown came at the end of a 65-yard drive which was assisted by a 15-yard penalty when Notre Dame over-reacted to a 19-yard run by Doug Bynum and piled on him two plays later. (AP) -Cliff Brown, Notre Dame's first black quarterback, ran for two touchdowns and passed to Mike Creaney for another as the Irish came from behind Saturday to beat Tulane's stubborn football team, 21-7. The Irish trailed 7-0 at the intermission but maintained a season-long record of not yielding a point in second half play. Tulane, now a seven-time loser this fall, scored in the second quarter on a 14-yard pass from Rusty Lachussee to Steve Barrios. The closest the Irish came to getting on the scoreboard in the first half was a 30-yard field goal attempt by Bob Thomas. It was blocked by Mike Mullen, who repeatedly knocked down Notre Dame runners during the afternoon.

The Irish bunched two touchdowns in the third quarter, Brown plunging a yard for the first and passing 19 to Crseany for the second score. The Notre Dame quarterback completed an 18-yard pass to Tom Gatewood and John Ciesz-kowski got off a 17-yard sprint in the touchdown drive that gave the Irish a 14-7 with just 5 seconds left in the third Strahan almost went all the way with the ensuing kickoff, for producing touchdowns in a single season. Lyons had accounted for 15 touchdowns, nine by passing and six by running, and has regular season games remaining with Notre Dame and Tulane. Breaks Cannon Record Cantrelle broke Billy Cannon's record for career rushes, running his total to 360, and moved ahead of Gene "Red" Knight in career rushing yardage. Cantrelle, who netted 42 against Mississippi State, is headed only by Cannon, who totaled 1,867 yards.

Cantrelle has 1,497 yards, but missed all but two games of his sophomore season. LSU scored a touchdown in each quarter against Mississippi State, which made its field goal immediately after the Tigers' score with the opening kickoff, and trailed only 7-3 midway of the second period, when a gamble backfired and opened the door for LSU. Bert Jones, who came up with his best performance in some time, guided the Bengals to their other two touchdowns, getting one of them himself. Lyons scored on runs of 13 yards in the first quarter and 15 yards in the third. Jones ran over from the two-yard line in the second quarter, for a 14-3 halftime lead, and directed an impressive drive in the fourth period that Chris Dantin culminated with a two-yard burst.

FG Only Threat Glenn Ellis' 23-yard field goal accounted for Mississippi State's scoring, and it was really the only serious threat the Bulldogs were to make against an LSU defense that was sluggish early but eventually worked into proper form. The teams exchanged spectacular kickoff returns to start the game, Dantin carrying back the opening boot 59 yards to help LSU to an early easy score that might have encouraged some relaxation, and Tommy Strahan running back State's 53 yards to set up Ellis' field goal. State, mixing the Wishbone-T and the Power-I for its attack, was virtually helpless in the second half, collecting only two first downs and 59 yards in total offense after intermission. While LSU's offense was hard but Pepper Rutland got him at the LSU 35. State worked down close, but on third down at the eight, end John Wood smeared Bill Buckley and the Bulldogs Soun had to settle for a field goal.

Then Lyons carried the Tigers on a seven-play, 66-yard drive. The key play was a 19-yard pass from Lyons to Gerald Keigley to the State 41 on a third-and-four situation. A 16-yard run by Shorey and a nine-yarder by Cantrelle set up Lyons' 15-yard touchdown scamper.

Paul slid down the right side of the line, faking all the time and scattering the State defense, and then accelerated and dashed into the end zone standing up. The prettiest drive of the night, though, was yet to come, with Jones looking about as good as he has ever looked. It covered 90 yards in 14 plays, featuring poised execution by Jones. A clip on a punt forced LSU to start from its own 10. Bear put the drive in motion with a 15-yard pass to set up Dantin's scoring drive.

Jones on Keepers In between, Jones made runs of 8, 7 and 6 yards on keepers, and LeDoux had a 12-yard run on a reverse. Charley Shira, the Mississippi State coach, thought LSU's errorless performance was the big difference. "As far as I could see LSU played errorless ball. I don't think they had a turnover," he said. "We had a good effort, just couldn't make the short yardage situations.

I think the fourth down play (in the second quarter) was a big play, but if we had made the first down, I think the momentum could have gone our way." The Cubs already have announced that the contract of Harry "Peanuts" Lowrey will not be renewed.

Lowrey also was a long-time favorite of Durocher. To expedite matters, coach Joey Amalfitano, long a Durocher favorite, resigned with the Cubs Tuesday and joined the San Francisco Giants as a coach. Similarly, Larry Jansen, a former teammate of Lock-man's and a long-time friend, left the Giants Wednesday and was hired as the Cubs' pitching coach. Before the manager goes, the popular 40-year-old super star, will be Lockman's first lieutenant as the club's first base coach.
