Rebounding after a fall to the lowest quotations since 1897, corn attracted unusual speculative attention owing to curtailment of receipts and improvement of cash demand.

Some pit authorities said that although stocks, wheat and "what have you" had been persistently sold against corn, the market for corn was now showing a better foundation than had been seen for months. Corn closed firm, y4ac. above yesterday's finish, wheat unchanged to c. lower, oats unchanged to Vsc. higher.

Reports that 20,000 bushels of corn had been sold for shipment overseas contributed to the energy with which the com market rallied from early downturns in price. The transient weakness of corn was ascribed to sympathy with wheat market unsettle-ment, a result in turn of instability of stocks. While the corn market at this stage was being dominated as of late by the action of wheat and of securities, little notice was taken that shipping demand for corn was increasing In good earnest. It was disclosed later, though, that shipping purchases here in the last few days had totaled 750,000 bushels, and that country offerings to arrive were dwindling almost to zero. Upturns in corn prices followed quickly.

Receipts of corn at primary points totaled but 324,000 bushels, compared with 403,000 a week ago. The maximum rise in corn values from the day's bottom was almost 2 cents a bushel, with the close at virtually the day's top. Wheat, rye and oats responded to corn price bulges and wheat recovered most of an earlier loss of 1 cents. Some late buying of wheat was attributed to bullish crop reports from the Southwest.
