Most biologists list three major causes of fish death after being hooked and released. They include mishandling and damage to the body or internal organs, infection resulting from loss of the mucous covering on the skin while being handled and shock brought on from fatigue and loss of energy while being boated. Fisheries officials contend that the longer a fish is played before being brought in, the greater the amount of stress and likelihood of loss of life.

To offset the above factors, anglers are urged to handle the fish carefully and the least amount necessary, don't remove it from the water unless it's absolutely necessary and release it to the water easily, giving respiration for a few seconds until the fish swims away under its own power. Avoid closing your hand around the fish's body. This not only removes the protective slime on its outer body but could cause internal rupturing or other damage. Use adequate tackle to get the fish landed quickly. A fish in shock and released in that condition is easier prey for predators before recovering.

SCATTER SHOTS: Among items on the agenda of Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for their regular public meeting in New Orleans April 26: Set spring shrimp season, discuss amendment to rules and regulations for bait shrimp season, approve allocation to Ducks Unlimited, discuss establishment of Atchafalaya Basin Wildlife Management Area, uniform policy for game division and approval of assignment from Justiss Mears Oil Co. to Hunt Energy Corp. A request for discharge permit into Old River south of Natchitoches by J-M Poultry Packing Ltd. is on agenda of La. Stream Control Commission when that body meets in Baton Rouge April 29th.

"Put 'em back alive" is an admonition many anglers are hearing more of these days, urging them to return their catch to the water. Bass Anglers Sportsman Society has taken the lead in such a program, thus giving it national recognition. The first time I became aware of such a project was over a decade ago when a St. Louis, Mo. outboard motor dealer began urging outdoor writers to champion such a cause.

Jack Lorenz. now director of the famed Izaak Walton League, but a freelance outdoor writing colleague at the time, joined with me in the movement. A question asked by many fishermen is whether the fish they return actually survive or do they just die unnoticed. While watching the return of bass taken during the recent BASS Champs tournament on Teni nessee's Percy Priest reservoir, I discussed the issue with Tom Bankhead, executive director of Bass Research Foundation, the national organization headquartered in Starksville, Miss, and dedicated to funding research on the bass family. "My thinking, as well as a number of biologists, is that you should return all fish not wanted to the water," replied Tom to my query.

"Some anglers feel that if a fish is deep-hooked or otherwise injured, that it isn't a good idea to release them back. But we feel that even though the fish may eventually succumb, that it still offers a service in the eco-systcm of that stream, by providing food for other members of the stream's population. Even the decaying carcass supplies fertilizer to plants and other living organisms which in turn provide needed oyygen and other resources to complete the aquatic food chain," the director explained. "Mostly, it's a matter of not wasting the fish by allowing them to die and be discarded," Bank-head added. If the fish are to be utilized by the angler or someone else, then keep them.

But in some cases, returning the fish alive means someone else can also have the enjoyment of catching it at another time. Boston .0 0 8 1 I 9 1 0 1 Toronto ..8 8091893 x- i McKay. LOB Boston 6, Toronto 6. 2B Velez, Mason. HR Velez 2 (5), GScott (2).

Topo Map Available A multi-colored topographic map showing many man-made and natural features in the Alexandria area is now available from the U.S. Geological Survey in a pocket-sized edition that should prove popular with area residents and visitors. The map, complete with its own plastic carrying pouch, is one of 24 USGS "topo" maps included in a nationwide survey to check user reaction to the new format. A useful tool for over 90 years for scientists, engineers, and others concerned with the nation's resources, the 45,000 published USGS topo maps have become increasingly popular as "silent guides" for outdoor enthusiasts. Each map, by showing the shape and elevations of the terrain and delineating in detail a wide range of natural and man-made features, can be used for hiking, cycling, hunting, fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities.

On the Alexandria map, for example, woodlands along the Red River and elsewhere are shown in green, and lakes, ponds, marshlands, bayous, and canals are shown in blue. Highly urbanized areas, major highways, and section lines are red, and smaller roads, railroads, trails, levees, and political boundaries are black. Elevations, depressions, and general "lay of the land" are shown by brown contour lines at five-foot intervals. Locate Cemetery The map also shows the location of Alexandria National Cemetery, Camp Beauregard, and the parish courthouse, as well as many schools, colleges, churches, cemeteries, hospitals, radio towers, sandpits, and individual homes as they existed at the time of mapping (1971). According to the USGS spokesman, "Our topo maps have usually been sold flat as scientific working tools.

A 23x27-inch map is not too handy, however, to keep in the glove compartment or tackle box or to sell over the counter. We think the new folded map in its heavy plasticd pouch will prove even more popular with the general public than the flat map and will be easier for distributors to sell and display with other books and magazines." About 1,000 copies of each of the maps are available, and each includes a pre-addressed, postage-free postcard asking users for their reac-Uion. The Alexandria-area map covers about a 62-square-mile area and is published at a scale of 1:24,000 (1 inch to 2,000 feet). Mapped, edited, and published by the USGS, copies of the map may be purchased for $1.25 each by mail from the Branch of Distribution, P. O.

Box 25286, Federal Center, Denver, Co. 80225. The maps will also be sold through private dealers, but prices may vary slightly. AMERICAN LEAGUE East Pet. BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) -The Minnesota Twins have called up two players from their Tacoma farm club to replace two pitchers injured in a two-car auto collision Monday. Left-hander Jeff Holly, 25, 0-1 at Tacoma, was purchased from the Pacific Coast League club. Holly was 5-5 with the Twins' Orlando team last season. Right-hander Davis May, 25, 1-0 with Tacoma, was the other player recalled.

May started last season at Orlando and finished at Tacoma, cord, suffered a compound fracture of his right knee and a fractured right wrist. Pazik was a passenger in a van driven by Carrithers when the vehicle and a car driven by Cheryl Ann Petros, 23, of North Canton, Ohio, collided on a freeway ramp. Miss Petros suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a hospital in Edina, Minn. QUOTE "Your bridal consultant made my daughter's selections so easv" Hill-Harris. The Twins lost right-hander Mike Pazik, 27, a starter, for the rest of the season and reliever Don Carrithers, 27, for two to three months after they were seriously injured in a head-on collision.

Pazik was hospitalized in serious and Carrithers was reported in fair to serious condition following the accident. Pazik, who had a 1-0 record, suffered fractures of both legs.
