B-2 Town Talk, Alexandria-Pinevillc. Sunday, September 14, 1975 Ex-Notre Damer Henry Sparkles Grid Scores inois Cajuns Sprint Past Southern Carter's Column a punt return 52 yards for a touchdown Saturday night as Nicholls State buried Tennessee-Martin 23-0 in a Gulf South Conference football game. The Tennessee squad never got inside Nicholls' 40 yard line, spending most of the night backed up to their own goal. Steve Stropolo opened the night's scoring with a four yard run five minutes into the first quarter. His plunge capped a 33-yard, seven-play drive.

Templet's punt return came just after the second quarter opened. Kent State, 31-29 MONROE, La. (AP) -Kent State scored 15 points in the first quarter then held off a furious second-half rally by Northeast Louisiana for a 31-29 football victory Saturday night. Defensive back Mark Lu-kers broke up a two-point pass in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory for Kent, which was opening its season. Northeast fell to 0-1-1 after a 3-3 tie with Pacific in its opener last week.

Quarterback Joe Bruner's passing sparked the second half rally by Northeast. He completed 17 of 33 passes for 202 yards and had two interceptions, the first being returned 52 yards for a touchdown by Cedric Brown. Nkholh, 23-0 THIBODAUX, La. (AP) -Safety Carl Templet packed Southern, 17-3 BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Ernest Dixon hit split end Isaac Hagin with a 74-yard scoring bomb the first pass of his collegiate career to give Southern a 17-3 football victory over Tuskegee Saturday night.

Dixon, a sophomore playing his first game for Southern University, completed three of five passes for a total of 81 yards, but had one pass intercepted. Tuskegee opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal by Bobby Shaw early in the first quarter, but Dixon responded immediately with his long touchdown pass and Everett Route booted a 30-yard field goal for Southern Cincy Blanks Saints 20-0 CINCINNATI (UPI) -Ken Anderson fired a 27-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Curtis and fullback Boobie Clark hurdled one yard for another score to lead the Cincinnati Bengals to a 20-0 shutout of the New Orleans Saints in a National Football League preseason finale Saturday night. Dave Green added field goals of 20 and 43 yards for Cincinnati, which closed out its exhibition schedule 4-3. The Saints, who never penetrated beyond the Cincinnati 31-yard line, finished with a 2-4 preseason mark. The Bengals scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, keeping their first scoring drive alive by faking a punt on a fourth and two at the 50-yard line.

Clark ran for the crucial two yards and then personally accounted for the final 40 yards of the 81-yard drive. Longley, Pokes Top Pitt IRVING, Tex. (UPI) Reserve quarterback Clint Longley revived a sputtering Dallas offense with two long second half scoring drives Saturday night to lead the Cowboys to a 17-16 preseason victory over the error prone Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Longley, a second-year pro, completed nine of 12 passes for 112 yards and took Dallas on scoring drives of 69 and 81 yards. The clincher was a fourth quarter touchdown pass of six yards to running back Robert Newhouse.

Toni Fritsch added a 35-yard field goal and rookie Tom Henderson scored the other Dallas touchdown by falling on a fumbled punt snap by Bobby Walden in the Steeler end zone. Steeler linebacker Jack Hamm picked off a Roger Staubach pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown in the first period, but Roy Gerela's conversion failed. Gere-la hit a 47-yard field goal with 15 seconds gone in the fourth period and Rocky Bleier scored the final Pittsburgh touchdown on a run of six yards late in the game. Sometimes a punter needs more than a golden toe. If Steve Jackson weren't one of the fastest punters in college football Nebraska surely would have beaten LSU more than 10-7 Saturday.

On the last play of the first half, just after Nebraska scored its only touchdown, Jackson punted to slippery Bobby Thomas at the Cornhusker 29. Thomas burst through the LSU coverage, and with his speed, appeared to be headed for a 71-yard return for a touchdown. LSU was fortunate that it had Us fastest punter in the game at the time. Few players on the LSU squad could have run down Thomas. Jackson did, streaking across the field and making the tackle at the 14 as the halftime gun sounded.

'It Was Him and Me "We had a 10-man rush on for the coverage," said Jackson afterwards. "When I saw that little guy get through all of them, I knew it was him and me. It was up to me. I had to get him. "He went to his left first, so I went to that side of the field to back him up.

But he cut back across and I had to go all the way across the field to get him. "I think he had about given out when I tackled him. I could tell he was tired. He was running real hard with his eyes closed. "He's an exciting little guy on kicks.

Give him credit. He almost returned two to three." As a freshman at LSU, Jackson once ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds, making him the fastest man on the squad, and he regularly covers that distance in the swift time of 4.4. He needed all of that speed to prevent Thomas from running his punt back for a touchdown. "I thought I might go all the way," said Thomas, who also caught four passes for 45 yards and scored his team's only touchdown on the five-yard pass from Terry Luck. "But then I knew time was running out, so I tried to get out of bounds and stop the clock.

I just couldn't quite make it in time." Jackson, a quarterback in high school in Chatom, and voted the outstanding player in the state in his class, knows how to tackle. Last year, he lettered as a reserve defensive back. This season he has inherited the punting job from his brother, Rusty, now with Birmingham of the World Football League. Averaged 43 Yards on Punts Steve got off a couple of line drives, which he didn't appreciate, among his nine punts. But he had one for 57 yards and averaged 43 yards.

The coverage was lacking in the first half, though, and in all, eight of his nine punts were returned, for a total of 122 yards. Randy Lessman averaged on 39 yards on his eight punts but didn't have any returned. Freshman Mike Conway handled LSU's two kickoffs against Nebraska. His first one sailed well into the end zone but his second was a shortie to the 11. Quarterback Bobby Moreau of Alexandria kicked LSU's extra point.

Tom Osborne, the Nebraska coach, credited his excellent kicking game with a narrow victory that hardly followed the script that had predicted a 15-point win for the Comhuskers. "I thought our kicking game and defense was outstanding," said Dr. Osborne. "I'm real pleased to get by LSU." The Comhuskers should have it a little easier next week, with Indiana here. There's no rest for LSU.

Texas comes to town. Was 'Joel Wood'Night atFH just before halftime. Halfback Larry Burnette concluded the scoring with a short touchdown plunge for Southern in the fourth quarter. Grambling, 40-7 WASHINGTON (AP) -James Hunter returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown and Doug Williams passed for two more in the first quarter Saturday to lead the Grambling Tigers to a 40-7 victory over Morgan State in a game played at RFK Stadium for the Touchdown Club Charities. Southeastern, 28-15 HAMMOND, La.

(AP)-Quarterback Don Griffen ran for one touchdown and unleashed a 61-yard scoring bomb Saturday night as Southeastern Louisiana defeated North Alabama 28-15 in a Gulf South Conference football opener. Southeastern began the scoring in the first quarter, picking off an interception and driving 19 yards before running back Horace Delton dove one yard for the tally. Then with three minutes left in the half, Griffen hit wide receiver Orlando Guzman with a 61-yard touchdown pass. Alabama's Will Fuller returned the opening kickoff 85 yards, but Southeastern responded with a 12-point third quarter. Griffen dived in from one yard out for the first score, and Gary Glaser intercepted Steve Clark's pass, returning it 35 yards tor anotner toucnaown.

fore he hurt his shoulder, Kenny Bordelon played as well as he ever has for LSU." Twice in one series Bordelon sacked Luck and one of his other three individual tackles was on the senior quarterback. "We are pretty bunged up," said McClendon. "We were crippled when we got here, and we got some bumps today." The only serious injury, he believes, was to center Jay Whitley, one of only two centers, with starter Greg Bienvenu at home with an injury. Whitley hurt his knee and may see no more service this season. OFF OUR EVERYDAY LOW PRICE Game Was Difference LAFAYETTE, La.

(AP) Quarterback Roy Henry sprinted for touchdown runs of 24 and 27 yards Saturday night to lead Southwestern Louisianna to a 27-10 college football victory over Southern Illinois. Henry, who spent last season on "the Notre Dame roster as a defensive back, added 10 pass completions on 21 attempts for 170 yards. Fumbles locked the Illinois squad in its own territory most of the night. They dropped the ball seven times and lost it to the Cajuns on three of those occasions. Sophomore kicker Rafael Septien opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter and added one from 52 yards out in the fourth period to cap the night's action.

He also had three boots for points after touchdowns. Barry Pollard, last year's starting quarterback for Southwestern, got the Cajuns' third touchdown on a one-yard keeper. Wide receiver Ivy Moore scored the Illinois club's lone touchdown of the night on a 67-yard bomb from quarterback Leonard Hopkins. Ken Seaman booted a 44-yard field goal for their final score. Southwestern, 27-10 LAFAYETTE, La.

(UPI) Quarterback Roy Henry ran for 96 yards and passed for another 170 Saturday night, leading the University of Southwestern Louisiana to a 27-10 victory over Southern Illinois. Henry, who transferred to Southwestern Louisiana from Notre Dame, made touchdown runs of 24 and 27 yards, and Rafael Septien of Mexico City kicked field goals of 25 and 52 yards. Septien, who kicked a 57-yard field goal last year, missed an attempt Saturday night for 68 yards. Barry Pollard, who shares quarterbacking chores with Henry, scored a touchdown with a one-yard plunge as Southwestern jumped ahead and never trailed. Southern Illinois scored on a 67-yard pass from quarterback Lanard Hopins to Ivy Moore and a 44-yard field goal by Ken Seaman.

The ball sailed on me for some reason. But it's great to win a tough game like that. "I think a lot of people may have underestimated LSU.

They really clogged up that middle. I'm sure glad to win that one. Cassidy and (Adam) Duhe are fine players." Bib Lingenfelter, Nebraska's 6-7, 282-pound offensive tackle, had much praise for the Tiger defense. "No matter how low we w'ent we couldn't get underneath," he said. "We couldn't blow them out.

They were quick and tough. I'm just glad to win." LSU's pass defense didn't get together until after Clinton Burrell, one-on-one on swifty little Thomas, was faked into a spin and permitted Thomas to get wide open deep in the end zone for Luck's touchdown pass. Thomas almost scored again on the last play of the half, but was run down by punter Steve Jackson after he had returned the punt 47 yards to the Tiger 14. LSU's suspect offense went into the game with three injured starters in the offensive line at home, and it lost tackle' Rock Raiford midway through the first quarter for the rest of the half. And the execution of the quarterbacking left much to be desired.

Moreau was depressed afterwards, aware of his unsteady performance, particularly on the option, and. Lyons wasn't a lot more impressive, except on the lone touchdown march. "It was an experience watching these young people prepare for this game," said McClendon. "They had their hands full out there, and they made mistakes, but they came to play.
