"I regretted it then and I regret it now," the attorney general said, angry that Clements made an issue of the arrest.

Accusing the governor of taking an "ugly turn" in his campaign, White called the Spectator a fake newpaper. "This is garbage and that is where the people of Texas will throw it," he said. This is the lowest quality campaign stunt I've seen." Clements responded that he reads the Spectator because "there are some interesting things in there. Everything in there is a fact." In his summation, White accused Clements of siding with business interests, including utility companies, and the rich. He noted that Clements signed a bill allowing 24 percent interest rates on credit cards and developed a plan to employ Mexican alien guest workers at the expense of Texas workers.

"He has said the state's increase in unemployment is unimportant," White charged. "There are 500,000 Texans out of work tonight. He has sided with the rich against Texans In every case." White said Clements was soft on environmental issues and recalled Clements remark that a 1979 Mexican oil spill that stained Texas' beaches was "much ado about nothing." White said that as attorney general, he blocked the Deparment of Energy from test drilling nuclear waste disposal sites near Palestine and that he opposed similar test drillings underway in the Panhandle. Clements constantly refered to White as incompetent, charging that a state suit against General Motors was "a classic example of ineptness and incompetence in the attorney general's office." White said he filed the suit because GM failed on its promise to give Texans $2,000 rebates on new cars. the often virulent debate between Gov.

Bill Clements and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark White came to an end, the two men shook hands in a brief showing of congeniality. Then, standing almost toe to toe and surrounded by reporters, they railed at each other once again. "For nine months, you have been saying the most ugly things about me," Clements told his opponent. "I hope you'll stop the mudslinging, Governor," White responded. The brief exchange exemplified the tone and content of the hour-long debate, which was broadcast Friday by Ajnarillo TV station KVII.

candidates clearly focused on each other as major issues in the 1982 gubernatorial race. White was particularly rankled by a recent article in the Texas Spectator, a Republican-backed newspaper that printed a story about his 19-year-old QDQaO UH Willi Mi hite takes a shot ROLLS Save BIG on values up to $25. plants in Malvern and Arkadelphia for almost 30 years. Reynolds officials have said the lack of cheap power could force the shutdown of the two plants. White called the power allocation change "inexcusable" and said, "If I don't get relief I'm going to sue the federal government." White said Clinton had spent a great deal of time talking about the two major issues in the race utilities and jobs but had neglected the third major issue crime "because his record in that area is a disaster." He called Clinton's policy for setting execution dates for capital offenders "a joke" and reiterated his promise to work for shorter appeals processes for death row inmates. White, in a standard campaign speech to the partisan group, raised few new issues, blasting Clinton on the former governor's record on crime and said Clinton's energy policy, at one point, bordered on "imcompetence." White said Clinton's Washington office, which he abolished as promised after taking office in 1981, had failed to note that the Southwest Power Administration was holding hearings in 1979 on proposed reallocation of power generated in the SPA's hydroelectric system.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (UPI) Republican Gov. Frank White said the lack of support Democratic gubernatorial nominee Bill Clinton has received from two of the party's other candidates exemplifies a lack of unity within the party. Speaking Friday at a Republican fundraiser in Hot Springs, White noted that "Jim Guy Tucker very clearly has not endorsed Bill Clinton and Joe Purcell has very clearly not endorsed Bill Clinton either." Clinton defeated both Tucker and Purcell in the party's primary election, and neither has come out in support of him. Neither appeared in Hot Springs at 50 77 49 8 3 NOW to sq.
