The election passed off quietly on Tuesday, notwithstanding the large amount of whisky which some of our Democratic candidates made use of to drug some poor, miserable, opinion less creatures who should lose their votes for being duped by such unprincipled demagogues. Some of oar Democratic cotempora-ries circulated the report last week after the election, that the colored children would attend the public schools on Monday. We suppose that such would be the result of abolishing colored school districts as did the Democratic -school board of Richland Township, The loses $2,000,000 by the Chl- -catro fire. We have often thought tha' if there were two import ant persons in a congregation one of them should be the janitor." He should be a man of delicate olfactories, and we think a set of "weak lungs might make him sensitive to tbe existence of an atmosphere that had been breathed over for the fortieth time.

He should be a man whose religion would not interfere with doing a lit tle extra work in the way of shifting windows in order to secure a little fresh air occasionally. He should under stand that good fires regularly main tained, not red hot stoves, do not in jure the purity of the air, and 'hat that is a better way to keep than by keeping all the windows closed for fear some consumptive individual might die an hour sooner from exposure. We are inclined to think it there was a little preaching done to janitors and less keep-awake, high-keyed pulpit dem onstration, church going would be sin- gularjy improved. We have endured the bad air of a sick room, but can't see the necessity of moral hospitals made of our churches. Church dea cons and elders are not supposed to care enough for the rest of the congre- g.ition to look after their comfort.

We cannot see that it would do the bell any positive injury to be rung twice for service instead of once the present practice in some places. A half hour for reflection would do no one any in jury, but wnen aevotea to watring on the minister it is not so agreeable. Some say that Cam j. bell's speech did it, a few are cursing the Standard for being the cause of it while others say tht fraud carried it against them.

However full Bellaire may be of beer shops and whisky saloons, we would kindly suggest that her citizens have sense enough to see through such a drunken election eering spree as several leaders of the party engaged in on the Saturday and Saturday night proceeding the election. We suggest that all necessary speeches be made previous to visiting all the saloons and treating all the roughs in the city. Some one suggests that in addition to the announcement that the Tammany Ring of St. Clairsville had been broken should also announce that the official tloons of the County had been "bu ted." We gladly proclaim the fact! and sincerely hope thp.i ver Republican officers shall use their offices as whisky shops, they shall re ceive the same treatment as have some of our Democratic cotemporaries. There is no doubt that some of our public offices have been disgraced and were doubly disgraced on last Tuesday by the above practice.

Since the opening of the campaign just over we have added a large num ber of names to our subscription list. Many these were campaign subscribers and must be dropped nnless you come up as you should do and continue your subscription. We need your help to complete the work we have com menced. Our success was not the work of two or three months, but the work of a year's exposure of the cor ruption of a party or a ring with whom we are only half done. The successor our party next year will depend very much upon the encouragement you give your papers now.

If you wish good work done, give encouragement to such work. Help us to increase our circulation until the Chronicle will be found in every Republican family, and we will send you no subsidized sheet, winking at the plunderings of any party or ring. Templars held its 18th annual session in Akron, commencing Wednesday Oct. 4th, 1871. A large number of delegates were present and deep Interest iu the cause of Temperance was manifested. To give anything like a fnll report of its proceedings wcnld require more than space allowed us, hence, with a brief notice of it we refer you to its printed report. The finances are in good condition.

It took action on many important subjects and starts out better prepared for active work the coming year than any previous year in its history. Two public meetings were held during the session. The large hall was well filled each evening and great enthusiasm prevailed. Rev. John Rus-.

sell, R. W. G. of North America, addressed one of the meetings in an el oquent manner portraying the evils of temperance, and exhorting the pe pie to more diligent labor in forwarding ts overthrow. He has few equals as a speaker.

To give some idea of the dig nity and promises of the Order we ap pend the following from G. W. C. Tern plar Stewart's report "The radical, aggressive policy pur sued by our Order, against the Liquor Trafhc. while it has caused a lew ot tbe faint-hearted to fail and the false-heart ed to fall away from its ranks, has brought into them new elements of strength and inspired an earnest enthu siasm through all its advancing columns.

We do not meet to take counsel of our fears, or to stand with reverting faces, but looking boldly forward, question the future how and where we can strike more effect ve blows against the great enemy of our Order and cause, of humanity and of God." We have on our tabid the Ohio Iu-cational Monthly for October. Some ofthe most interesting articles contained in it are the "New Education," "Manners in School," "The Sven Lamps of Teaching," and the "Notes Signs." Also the Companion, a monthly magazine for Odd Fellows and their families, for the month of October. "Two Sides to a story," "Oar Dream Life," "A Step on the Gravel," short and lively little stories, are found in it. In structive and valuable articles to tho general reader, as well as the fraternity such as "Herschel as Music Master," History of tu Order in Illinois," etc. are also contained in it.

There will be a meeting of the Qua ker City Driving Park Association on the 27th and 23th of Octob -r, 1871; premiums $400. All entries close Oct. 21, 1871, at which time a full programme will be given. Half fare tickets will be sold at all stations between Zanes-ville and Wheeling. 4 I ALEX.
