Yarbrough Credits God With Victory 20-A. May 5, 1976 THE SHREVEPORT TIMES DEATHS He said he hoped everyone would investigate his back- ground and then, "Come to Austin and witness a miracle." CAP)-Future Texas Supreme Court justice Don Yarbrough said Tuesday that God told him to run for the state's highest judicial post and God helped him win the race. "I put you on notice now that insofar as my vote on any issue it will be inter preted in accord with God's word," the 35-year-old Houston attorney said at a rambling and disjointed news conference. Yarbrough scored a surprising upset win last Saturday over Chief Justice Charles Barrow of the San Antonio Court of Civil Appeals for a vacant seat on the Texas Supreme Court. He has no Republican opponent in November. In a quiet and deliberate voice, he confirmed reports that he had been named as defendant in at least six civil suits seeking more than $700,000 in damages.

They mostly allege mishandling of investments, unpaid notes and fraud in connection with operation of the State Bank of Victoria, which Yarbrough owned for about a year. He also revealed that one of the principals in one of the suits had filed a complaint against him with the Houston State Bar grievance committee. He said no action had been taken on the complaint "so far as I know." When asked if any of the pending actions might keep him from taking the oath of office he replied: "No, I don't see any such possibility. Of course if any of these lawsuits comes to the Supreme Court I certainly will not participate." Yarbrough said that "something happened to my life" in 1964 when "I made a commitment of my life to Jesus Christ." Then earlier this year he decided to run for the Railroad Commission, "but everytime I was in personal prayer I did not feel right about it." Then one day, he said, God said: "You run for the Supreme Qourt of'Tex-as." "God is intensely interested in those who are going to administer justice." evagabor's ft ,17 INTERNATIONAL 1 VVV' It two best ORIG. $20 TO $25 SALE Both are in ultra soft colors, mixes, blends Wigs-DILLARD'S EACH Dynel modacrylic in a complete range of all natural and frosts.
