tho renomlnation of Piesldent Taft appeared inevitable It was recognized that the week would be a critical period and it was au mltted that a sweeping success ol the Roosevelt forces during the six days would bring about a new aspect of republican affairs So great appeared to be the Initial Roosevelt handicap that an even break was thought to be the best the colonel could hope to achieve To gain hall the delegates of the week seemed to be the outside aspiration of the anti Taft forces Such a result in fact would have been hailed as a distinct Roosevelt victory The deluge in Illinois was the beginning of the overturn This was discounted by the Taft managers as due to local causes and specifically to an unfortunate linking of the cause of the president with that of Lorimer The Illinois result was held to be sporadic and without large sifinlfi cance The later Roosevelt success in Maine was also dismissed without much manifestation of fear It was confidently expected that boss rulea Pennsylvania speaking at the end of the week would more than counterbalance the losses of the earlier days But the people and not the bosses spoke in Pennsylvania To be sure the Pittsburg bosses were lined up on the Roosevelt side but the far greater masters of the state machine were certain that they hnd everything well in hand for the president The tremendous Roosevelt sweep cannot be judged otherwise than as an expression of popular disapproval of the president and his policies Even the most ardent supporter oi Mr Taft must now admit that wher ever anything approaching a prefer ential expression has been allowed the voters they have turned against the president The great advantage derived by the administration at tht start came largely from states wnich have chosen their delegates in the old time boss hampered way When the people have spoken freely they have not spoken for Mr Taft The distinction was not made clear even to the closest political observers until the astonishing events of last week dispelled all doubt It is now apparent that a nation wide preferential primary would assure the nomination of some candidate other than tho president It is not apparent however that the Taft forces are routed or that they have no chance of securing the majority of delegates Such a result is still possible though its advisability from a partisan standpoint is more than doubtful It is only natural to find a certain gloom perhaps a manifest lethargy settling upon tho administration forces that have been so blithely optimistic Nor is the nomination of Col Roosevelt to be predicted He has become a powerful contender has changed from a seeming Impossibility to the most commanding figure in the race but his goal is far from attained Nothing less than the unimaginable withdrawal of the president In favor of his predecessor and former sponsor would give tho Oyster Bay aspirant any solid basis for confidence The republican situation has become doubly complicated and difficult Tho healing of the breach seems to bo impossible Out of tho stirring record of the past week comes only one new thought that is at all in spiring Off hand it may be said that a compromise candidate offers the only solution tho only remedy for republican ills But where Is the man who can unite Taft and Roosevelt Who is the candidate who can coax the contestants to lay down their arms Is such a man to bo found itf the United States These questions may well be taken under serious consideration by the men who without axes to grind Honestly desire to save tho republican party from disruption At this time no other remedy seems likely to bring results and this is eo difficult and desperate that It offers no alluring hope Slondays Plain Dealer Vaults Wells Cisterns Cleaned Thomas
