ALEXANDRIA DAILY TOWN TALK, ALEXANDRIA-PINEV1LLE, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1970 SECTION A PACE ELEVEN NFL Division Setup More Successful Than Anticipated All Six Races Could Go Down to the Final Week In other games Minnesota Sports with By Fred McMane UPI Sports Writer The six division setup which the National Football League missed a chance to clinch, its division title by losing to the Jets, 20-10; the Giants edged put into effect in this first year of the merger is working out decided and the possibility still remains that all six races could go down to the final week before the winners are determined. In the American Football Conference, there is a three-way tie for first place between Cleveland, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh in the Central Division and tie for first between Kansas City and Oakland in the West Division. Baltimore holds a two-game edge over Miami in the East Division, but that could be reduced to a game and a half if the Dolphins can beat the Atlanta Falcons tonight. In the National Conference Los Angeles and San Francisco are deadlocked for first pice in the West Division, St. Louis holds a game and a half edge over the New York Giants in the East Division and Minnesota leads Detroit by two games in the Central Division.

The three divisional ties came about Sunday as a result of Los Angeles avenging an earlier loss to San Francisco, 30-13; Kansas City defeating San Diego, 26-14; Pittsburgh beating Cleveland, 28-9; and Cincinnati trouncing New Orleans, 26-6. Washington, 27-24; St. Louis topped Philadelphia, 23-14; Baltimore nipped Chicago, 21-20; Houston defeated Denver, 31-21; much better than originally anticipated. Bill Carter With only three weeks and Boston snapped a nine- remaining in the regular season, there is not one game losing streak by topping Buffalo, 14-10. Victor Missed Out on Spoils divisional race which has been Three touchdown runs by Willie Ellison and three field goals by David Ray sparked the Rams' victory and left Los Angeles and San Francisco with identical 7-3-1 records.

If both teams should go on to win their remaining three games the Rams would be awarded the division title since they out- scored the Forty Niners by three points in the two games between the clubs. Lenny Dawson connected on 17 of 24 passes for 208 yards, including a 50-yard scoring pass to Morris Stroud, and Jan Stenerud added four field goals as the Chiefs moved into a tie with Oakland with a 6-3-2 record. The Chiefs and Raiders played to a 17-17 tie earlier this year but will meet again on Dec. 12. Terry Bradshaw threw scor ing passes of 81 yards to Ron Shanklin and 57 yards to Johnny Fuqua in sparking the Steelers to a victory over the Browns, who had entered the game with a full game lead over both Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

Winning Streak Snapped George Nock gained 117 yards, including a 15-yard TD run, and the Jets intercepted four passes in snapping the Vikings' seven-game winning With 17 seconds left and Washington trailing the New York Giants 27-24, the Redskins lined up to try an apparent 42-yard field goal, but quarterback Sonny Jurgensen (9) pulled the ball away from kicker Curt Knight's foot and faded back to pass. The rush was on and Jurgensen was tackled by Giants' Joe Green and the New Yorkers left Washington Sunday with a victory. streak. The loss was only the Vikings' second 11 games. Pete Gogolak's 20-yard field Archie Still a Question Mark goal with 1:52 remaining enabled the Giants to keep pace with the Cardinals in the NFC East.

Pro Football Scoreboard NFL Standings By United Press International American Conference Both Tulane and LSU met five bowl teams during the regular season, proof enough that they have earned trips to post-season games. If LSU makes it to the Orange, all four of Tulane's conquerors will be in bowl games, plus one of the Greenies' victims, tough North Carolina, which was given the Peach Bowl nod over Georgia, another team the Wave whipped. Other teams that defeated Tulane, and the bowls in which they will play: Texas Tech, Sun Bowl; Air Force, Sugar Bowl, and Georgia Tech, Sun Bowl. There was a lot of talk about the softness of LSU's schedule the first five weeks. Maybe so, but how about the last half? Five of the Tigers' last six opponents are in bowls Auburn and Ole Miss in the Gator, Alabama in the Bluebonnet, Notre Dame in the Cotton and Tulane in: the Liberty.

The other foe, Mississippi State, then defeated Ole Miss. All of those bowl teams except Tulane re or have been in the Top 20 of the polls, and three of them have been in the top six; Four of Tulane's opponents have been xanked, two of them in the top 10. A COSTLY GOOF It develops that an error by an official was responsible for LSU having broken its string of not yielding a touchdown by Dave Aber-crombie did the honors, for Tulane, with six minutes remaining in the game. On first down from the one foot line, Abercrombie crashed into the line, fumbled and Tommy Casanova recovered for LSU, leading everybody to think that the record was intact. After considerable discussion, the play was nullified.

LSU was offside and Tulane in motion. A little later, one official told LSU linebacker Mike Anderson: "I'm sorry, Mike, I goofed on that one." LSU's Lloyd Frye made a false start, jumping over the line, but then back. However, before the ball. was snapped, a Tulane player, apparently, because of Frye's move, darted out, and Frye came back, making contact. As the official admitted, only Tulane should have been penalized.

Frye had not made a violation. LSU would have declined penalty and taken the ball, thus preserving a streak that had reached the 13th EYES ON LOUISIANA Two days before the LSU-Tulane game, a Richmond, newspaper reported that Virginia Tech was ready to offer McClendon a rich contract, perhaps worth $50,000 a year, to become head coach. McClendon has never been contacted, although I feel certain he will be. Saturday morning, a New Orleans radio station reported that Pittman had called his squad together on Friday night and told them this would be their last game together, because he was taking the head coaching job at Rice. This not only was a lie, but a cruel one.

To the conquered go the spoils? That was the unusual result of the LSU-Tulane game. LSU actually was the winner, by a 26-14 score, but you had to check the scoreboard to be sure. After the game, Tulane received and accepted an invitation to play Colorado in the Liberty Bowl at Memphis Dec. 12. LSU was merely reminded that it still must beat Ole Miss next Saturday night to get the Orange Bowl berth opposite Nebraska.

Jim Pittman, the Tulane coach, was full of praise for his kids. He liked the war they stuck in there despite seven turnovers, four of them leading to LSU touchdowns and another possibly preventing one of their own. Charley McClendon, the LSU coach, was' almost angry, His boys won, and he" conceded that was the goal, but he was pretty upset over the way they played. And well he should have been. Nothing can be taken away from Tulane's effort.

Bud Dudley, director, of the Liberty. Bowl, made that plain by inviting Tulane after having in- formed the Greenies that they must beat LSU to get the trip. Still, it was a disappointing performance by an LSU team that is ranked sixth in the nation and probably will move a notch higher this week, considering that only one of the poll voters saw. their exhibition. TRAVEL 95 YARDS LSU traveled a total of 95 yards for its four touchdowns 45 yards after a bad snap spoiled a punt attempt, 10 yards after a fumble recovery, again 10 yards after a fumble recovery, and 30 yards after an interception.

The way things were going, either through LSU's ineptness or Tulane's defensive strength, the Tigers might not have scored if they had been forced to do it on their own. The players, as well as McClendon, realized they weren't in the proper frame of mind. They don't know why. The spark just wasn't there, even with so much at stake an Orange Bowl trip, the ancient rivalry, and the national ranking. Still, all those miskakes weren't Tulane's fault.

LSU's defense had something to do with them. On the other hand, Mark Lumpkin not only missed a seemingly simple 33 yard field goal, but also blew an extra point. Either because of a bad snap or improper handling, he didn't even get a try after the last touchdown. This was typical of the confused play. Then, too, Buddy Lee going to the air and being intercepted in the fourth quarter when he had a 26-7 lead, and that wide, wild pitchout in the same situation.

That's hardly the kind of football LSU normally plays. Still, the Tigers fared better than Notre Dame did. Perhaps both teams were suffering a bit after their classic the previous week. Now, that it's over, the Tigers certainly didn't waste anything that might be needed against Ole Miss Saturday night. Pet, 8 2 1 By ED SHEARER (Associated Press Sports Writer) Sixth-ranked Louisiana State and Mississippi, stunned in its last outing, collide in Baton Rouge Saturday night for the Southeastern Conference football championship, with an Orange Bowl bid hanging in the balance for the Bengals. The major stiii unresolved question in each camp is whether incredible Archie Manning, acclaimed by some as the finest quarterback in SEC history, will be able to play.

Manning suffered a broken left wrist against Houston on Nov. 7 and underwent surgery two days later. Initial reports were that he should be ready for the LSU game, but Ole Miss officials quoted the team physician as saying Sunday that if Archie plays, he won't be able to bend the left arm. Not Flexible 'His arm will be immobilized at a 90-degree angle," the spokesman said. "It won't be flexible." "Our game plans is to get ready for Archie," says Coach Charles McClendon of LSU.

"He's been a miracle man as far as LSU is concerned, so nothing really surprises me as to what his capabilities are. "I hope whatever decision is made by the Ole Miss coaches and doctors is a good one for the boy," McClendon added. "I certainly don't want any of the responsibility to rest on LSU if he should get reinjured in our game." 7 4 0 7 4 0 4 7 0 St. Louis N.Y. Among Saturday's stars were Alabama's Johnny Musso, who gained 221 yards on 42 carries; Auburn's Pat Sullivan with 317 yards and two touchdowns in the air; Chris Dantin of LSU with three touchdowns and Jack Williams of Georgia Tech, who fired two TD strikes against Georgia. Tennessee's alert secondary intercpeted four passes to raise its season total to an SEC record 35. Two Long Drives A pair of long drives spurred by quarterback Kelly Cochrane gave Miami two quick third period TDs and Mike Cummins' extra point kicks provided the margin of victory for the Hurricanes. The loss crushed Florida's hopes for a Liberty Bowl bid. Auburn, rallied by Pat Sullivan from a 17-point deficit, won a spot in the Gator Bowl against Mississippi.

The Tigers fought to a 17-17 tie in the third period, then Sullivan later threw a 17-yard TD pass to put the Tigers ahead 27-20. The Crimson Tide rallied, but Sullivan steered the winning touchdown march. Tennessee harassed Vanderbilt with a frustrating defense that picked off four passes.
