ALEXANDRIA DAILY TOWN TALK, ALEXANDRIA-PINEVILLE, LA, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1970 SECTION A PACE ELEVEN Western Ky. vs. Jacksonville Sports Big G-Big Mac Showdown Tonigh with Bill Carter Vi, Los Angeles Loyola an upset 63-61 victory over Cincinnati and Jake Davis' 30-foot jumper in the last second gave Pepperdine an 86-84 overtime triumph over NYU. N.C. State handed Davidson its first defeat 77-64, while in other games Fordham won its seventh by shading Miami, 85-83, Chicago Loyola humbled Cornell, 82-69, Duke downed Dayton, 70-64, Colorado squeaked past Texas Tech, 67-66, Massachusetts trounced Hofstra 87-60 and Brigham Young edged Santa Clara, 68-67.

Mexico 72-66. Michigan won its own Michigan Invitational tourney by beating Wyoming 94-76 as Dan Fife showed the way with 20 points. California landed third place by beating Harvard 77-74. Johnny Neumann, the No. 1 collegiate scorer, came up with 53 points for Mississippi against Vanderbilt, but the Johnny Rebs were routed 130-112 by the Commodores.

The 130 points set a Vanderbilt record for one fame. Two free throws by Bob Sie-mak with 29 seconds left gave ed Press poll, Western Kentucky 10th. Each boasts a 5-0 record. Top-ranked UCLA, idle for 10 days, romped to its fifth in a row Tuesday night. The unbeaten Bruins crushed Missouri 94-75 behind the combined 57 points by Sidney Wicks and Curtis Rowe.

Wiiks scored 29, Riwe 28. Kentucky, No. 7 in the AP poll, rebounded from its defeat by Purdue last week, and defeated Oregon State 84-78. Ninth-ranked Drake made it seven in a row by overwhelming Neumann Eruption Too Shy for Rebs By Ed Shearer (Associated Press Sports Writer) Mississippi's Johnny Newmann, the nation's No. 1 scorer, socked Vanderbilt with a 53-point explosion Tuesday night, but the Commodores had more firepower and won 130-112 to move into a tie for first with idle Louisiana State in the Southeastern Conference basket ish in the Southeast Conference.

They supported that finish by losing to Texas A 20-18 in the season opener. The only stumble thereafter was that 3-0 classic with Notre Dame. When it was all over, McClendon had won his first SEC championship, with a perfect 5-0 record, including victories over such toughies as Auburn, Alabama and Ole Miss. In the last 21 games, Charley Mac has won 18 and lost three games by a total of eight points, including the three point decision in 1969 to Ole Miss. BEHIND TENNESSEE Despite winning the SEC championship, LSU is ranked behind Tennessee in the national polls.

The Vols lost only once, but that was by two touchdowns to an Auburn team LSU whipped 17-9 on the Auburn field. Funny thing, from midseason on, LSU was ranked ahead of Tennessee, even after the loss to Notre Dame. On the night that the Bengals beat Tulane 26-14 after building a 20-0 lead, Tennessee scored two late touchdowns in a 24-7 triumph over a Vanderbilt team Tulane had beaten. Yet, Tennessee was moved ahead of LSU in the polls. On the final week, the Vols scored twice in the final two and one-half minutes to come from behind and beat unranked UCLA 28-17, while LSU was rolling up a 61-17 win over SEC favorite Ole Miss.

But Tennessee stayed ahead in the final regular season poll. The Vols not only were kept ahead of LSU. but vaulted over Notre Dame, which did not play. According to the professional odds-makers, the Orange Bowl should be the closest of the New Year's Day games. Ohio State is an 11-point pick over Stanford in the Rose, Texas a six-point choice over Notre Dame in the Cotton, and Tennessee a 10-point favorite over Air Force in the Sugar.

Must seem like old times for Charley McClendon (pictured). Not only is he hack in the bowl picture, but the opponent is undefeated and his LSUs are the underdogs. McClendon prefers the underdog role. He might as well. He is almost never favored in a key game, particularly in a bowl, but you can count on the index finger of your left hand the number of bowl games he has lost.

Nebraska, which has been made a five-point choice over LSU in the Orange Bowl, takes an impressive record of 10 victories, no losses and one tie to Miami. Yet, this is next to the worst record McClendon has ever faced in a New Year's Day bowl game. Texas was undefeated in the 1963 Cotton Bowl and ranked fourth in the nation, to LSU's seventh. The Tigers won 13-0. Arkansas was unbeaten in 22 consecutive games in the 1966 Cotton Bowl.

LSU was unranked, but won 14-7. Wyoming was unbeaten and ranked 10th in the 1968 Sugar Bowl. LSU was unranked, but won 20-13, after trailing 13-0. Syracuse, the 1965 Sugar Bowl foe, is the only team Mac has met on New Year's Day that lost a game during the regular season. LSU was a slight favorite and was pressed to win 13-10.

LOST TO UNDERDOG The only other time a McClendon team was favored in a bowl game, the Tigers lost to Baylor in the 1963 Blue-bonnet Bowl. Florida State and Ron Sellers were heavy favorites over LSU in the inaugural Peach Bowl, in 1968. The Tigers won that one, and hasn't played in a post-season game since until this season's Orange Classic. This is McClendon's highest-ranked team ever, No. 5 in the last regular season poll conducted by The Associated Press, yet the Bengals were picked for a second division fin- ball race.

Neumann, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, cracked a school record with 23 field goals, but his point total was four less than he had in a game earlier this year. In other action Tuesday night, sophomore Mike Andrews pitched in 19 points in the second half as seventh-ranked Kentucky slipped past Oregon State 84-78, Fordham beat Miami of Florida 85-85 and Georgia Tech won an unimpressive 72-58 victory over North Carolina-Charlotte. Vandy, now 2-0 in the SEC, got double figure point production from seven players as the Commodores broke the school record for points in a game. Dan Oliver led the scoring parade with 24 points, followed by Thorpe Weber with 18 and Ray Maddux and Rod Freeman with 16 each. Kentucky, 6-1, trailed by seven points in the second half when Andrews went to work.

Mike Casey also scored 19 for the Wildcats and Kent Hollen-beck added 18. Georgia Tech heads into next Minnesota 83-66. There were some surprises among the AP Second Ten. Indiana, No. 11, with George McGinnis scoring 38 points, rolled over Butler 111-94, but North Carolina, St.

John's of New York and New Mexico State, No. 17, 19 and 20, respectively, were beaten. Utah whipped North Carolina 105-86 led by Mike Newlin's 30 points. Boston College, paced by Jim O'Brien's 26 points, snapped the six-game winning streak of St. John's 69-66.

New Mexico State fell before New 1 ures gave him the NFC championship in that department. Two AFC statistical champions will be on display at Baltimore when the Bengals, with seven consecutive victories, and the Colts, with an 11-2-1 record, tangle in a game that will be nationally televised at 1 p.m., EST, by NBC. Jim Duncan provided the Colts with the most exciting kickoff returning in the AFC by averaging 35.4 yards a return. Dave Lewis supplied the Bengals with the top long-distance punting with a 46.2 average on 79 punts. The Bengals and Colts never have met before but the two coaches Cincinnati's Paul Brown and Don McCafferty of Baltimore know each other well.

McCafferty was coached bv Brown when he was at Ohio State. The Lions and Cowboys, who each have won five straight, did not meet this season. They last played in 1968 with Dallas winning 59-13. 1 Ole Miss forward Johnny Neumann (14) flips a backhanded goal early in the first period against Vandebilt. Vandy defenders watching are Thorpe Weber (31), Rod Freeman(25) and Van Oliver (41).

Vandy won despite 53 points by Neumann. Sfugfesf at Dallas, Contrast at Big 8 By Mike Rathet (Associated Press Sports Writer) The Cincinnati-Baltimore playoff game Saturday matches the team with the longest winning streak in the American Football Conference against the team with the best record, but for imposing opposite forces the Detroit-Dallas showdown later in By Ted Meier (Associated Press Sports Writer) The heralded meeting between the Big and Big Mac takes place tonight in college basketball. The Big otherwise known as 7-foot-2 Artis Gilmore of the University of Jacksonville, and Big Mac, 7-foot Jim McDaniels of Western Kentucky, face each other in Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. A capacity crowd is expected to watch the clash of the giants as well as a test of two unbeaten nationally ranked teams. Jacksonville is No.

4 in the Associat Phil Without Confidence, Camaraderie By Bob Greene GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -Confidence and camaraderie, two vital ingredients of the Green Bay Packers during the Vince Lombardi era, was less prominent this past season on the National Football League team. Whether the Packers' decline from two-time Super Bowl champions to also-rans in the National Conference's Central Division, and Tuesday's resignation of Phil Bengtson as coach and general manager, can be traced to the apparent cooling is a point of conjecture. The 57-vear-old Bengtson's resignation ended a dismal three- year stretch that saw the PacR win 23 games while losing 21 and tying once. This year's mark of 6-8 was the worst for the Green-and-Gold since 1958 when they posted a 1-15-1 record.

The 1959 season saw Lombardi take over the reins of a chronic loser and elevate the club to the role of champion. Although Lombardi's public image was that of an ogre, the Packer players knew better. First Move One of Lombardi's first moves as Packer coach-general mana-ppt was to hire Bengtson as his defensive coach. Through astute trades and recognizing his players' strong Doints and their weak ones Lombardi was able to mold a good, if not great, team. He added confidence his own and demanded camaraderie.

The Packers then were no longer a team, but a close-knit familv. Now, from outward appear ances, the Packers are just another Dro football team. The Packers are close, they are friends, but no longer are they family. In the nine years that Lombardi coached the Packers, Bengtson's defensive team was never lower than third-best in the NFL. Prior to the 1968 season, Lombardi stepped out of the head coach job and gave the reins to Benstson.

The following sea son, Lombardi left Green Bay entirely to become head coach and vice president of the Washington Redskins. Bengtson then took over as general manager of the Packers. The Indians, besides being a solid underdog, have not won a Rose Bowl game since 1941 and have played in only one since then.

Ohio State has played in five during that period and won them all. Hayes called the Buckeyes' practice just fair while Ralston liked the Stanford drills. Both had more practices on tap today. -New Orleans Saints trainer Warren Arial resigned i position Tuesday after publicly blasting the organization for firing coach Tim Fears in November. Arial, who had been with the National Football League franchise since 1967, was a staunch Fears follower. He was reportedly upset over the November change in the coaching position, and called his resignation, "of my own initiative." Arial said he had no immediate plans, but added, "I hope to get a training job 0 e-where." (AP) -Ohio State rates an 11-point favorite over Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

Don't mention it to Woody Hayes. 'Don't you start talking about upsets. If you talk about them, they happen," the Ohio State coach warned writers Tuesday after sending his Big Ten football champions through a heavy outside practice. The rain let up and gave Ohio State and Stanford a chance to get in much-needed work for their New Year's Day clash. The Indians took advantage of the weather to practice twice at their Long Beach State College site.

Hayes, whose three triumphs here make him the winningest Rose Bowl coach in history, turned psychologist Tuesday. "We lose some but we don't lose as many as others because we don't talk about it," he said. Downtown MacArth Village da 7 I 1 1 -Vin S7 "JxK I Si CLJP the day has a Dig eage.
