"I have two priorities and they are side by side. I want to make teachers recognize political force and to achieve legislation which by 1976 will see the federal government contributing at least one-third the cost of education. "Teachere in 42 states have organized teacher political action committees. In New York State, teachers are organized in all key legislative districts and are now endorsing candidates after intensive study. They also are organizing in congressional districts and will issue report cards on candidates' educational voting records so that teachers are able to make a complete judgment.

Buck, whose "The Good Earth" won both a Pulitzer Prize and a Nobel Prize in literature, celebrates her 80th birthday today. The only American woman ever to win the Nobel in literature, Miss Buck has turned out a total of 84 books during her writing career.

Born in Hillsboro, W. Buck spent most of her first 17 years in China with her missionary parents. She also served as a Presbyterian missionary herself in China, from 1914 until 1935. "The Good Earth," the story of a Chinese peasant's rise to power, was an offshoot of her Chinese experience. It won the Pulitzer in 1931 and the Nobel seven wars later.

SURGERY PLANNED HOUSTON (UPI)-Heart specialist Dr. Michael DeBakey says today's operation on Kentucky Gov. Wendell Ford for removal of a tumor from an abdominal artery should be standard and not take much more then an hour. The Kentucky governor flew to Houston Sunday to be examined by DeBakey. A Methodist Hospital spokesman said the 47-year-old Ford was expected to be in intensive care for about three days and should be dismissed from the hospital by late next week.

Ford's tumor an aneurism of the abdominal aorta was discovered June 15 when the governor was examined for a back injury he sustained during the Governor's Cup Hydroplane Regatta in Owensboro, four days before.
