(AP) Quarterbacks Gary Rutledge and Richard Todd threw four bombs between them Saturday night as fifth-ranked Alabama overwhelmed California 66-0 in their football opener. The mighty Crimson Tide turned the Wishbone into a passing offense and stunned California with scoring pass plays of 32, 16, 46 and 86 yards, with sophomore Joe Dale Harris catching the two longer ones. Meanwhile, the Alabama defense led by linebacker Woodrow Lowe shackled the Golden Bears almost completely.

The final margin was the same as the previous record for Alabama in a 1961 rout of Richmond. Todd, handling the option to perfection, rushed for 105 yards in seven carries. LORMAN, Miss. UPI Quarterback Joe Comeaux threw a touchdown pass to Dwight Scales and James Hunter scored on a 70-yard pass interception return Saturday to lilt Grambling to a 22-6 win over Alcorn Grambling, 2-0, got on the scoreboard first with a safety when a snap from center on an Alcorn punting play went out of Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant sent 73 players into the action for Alabama but the youngsters continued to pour on the points. College Football Scores Vols' Rally Beats Duke By 21-17 Bv Escar Thompson KNOXVILLE, Quarterback Condredge Holloway brought ninth-ranked Tennessee from the brink of defeat Saturday night by diving to the Duke 1 on a fourth down play to set up the Vols' 21-17 game-winning touchdown. It was a thrilling season opener for both teams. Tennessee, trailing 14-17, had a fourth-and-three on the Duke 6 with slightly more than 2 minutes left when Coach Bill Battle elected to go for a victory, rather than settle for a 17-17 tie with a field goal. Holloway, who earlier had thrown a 27-yard touchdown pass and dashed 49 yards for a another six pointer, rolled out to the right and dived to the Duke 1 for the first down.

Haskel Stanback crashed over for the touchdown with 2:05 left on the clock. Ricky Townsend, Tennessee's barefoot soccer-style kicker, booted three extra points to run his string to 34 straight over two seasons. Duke, led by brilliant quarterback Martin Johnson, appeared on the way to a shocking upset over Tennessee, which entered the game a three-touchdown favorite. Tennessee tackle Robert Pulliam recovered Johnson's fumble on Duke's 2fi with 4:47 left. Running plays moved the ball to the Duke 6 where Holloway made his game-saving five-yard run to the Blue Devils' 1.

Johnson scored both of Duke's touchdowns, capping a beautiful 80-yard drive by dashing over from the 4 on a Keeper ana sneaking over from the 1 two minutes later after the Blue Devils had recovered a Vol fumble on the kickoff. David Malechek, a freshman from West Point, kicked a 31-yard field goal and added two extra points for Duke's other points. (AP) Poised junior quarterback David Bowden threw three touchdown passes and the 14th ranked Florida Gators lived up to their advance billing with a season-opening 21-10 intersectional football victory over Kansas State Saturday night.

Intermittent rain throughout the game contributed to a rash of fumbles which played a part in two Florida touchdowns and both Kansas State scoring drives. Bowden tossed a 10-yard scoring pass to Glenn Sever that put Florida ahead late in the first quarter after Kansas State broke the ice with a 37-yard Keith Brumlcy field goal. Florida rolled up a 21-3 lead with Bowden's touchdown tosses of 10 yards to speedy Nat Moore and Hi yards to Lee McGriff then fought off a fourth-quarter threat by the Big Eight Conference visitors. "We'll be doing a few things differently, have a few trick plays, and we may look a little ragged," North warned, "we haven't been together all that long, but we'll get better." The Falcons were five-point favorites to run their win streak over New Orleans to nine games. The Falcons lost the first meeting between the two teams in 19(i7, but since Norm Van Brocklin took over as Atlanta coach in 19118 he has not lost to the Saints. Dick Shiner will start at quarterback for the Falcons, with former New Orleans Saint Al Dodd and Wes Ches-sor at the wide receivers. The Saints will have Archie Manning at quarterback, throwing to Jubilee Dunbar and Danny Abramowicz. Shiner led all Atlanta quarterbacks during the preseason, but fell 40 yards behind Manning's 370-yard output.

He will be replaced by Chuck Walker.

The Saints will also miss one of their starting defensive tackles, Ron Billingsley, who is out for the season with a knee problem. But, besides Billingsley, New Orleans also has lost two other defensive starters safetys Hugo Hollas and Doug Wyatt for the season. Hollas will be replaced by Jerry Moore, who was acquired from the Chicago Bears in a trade last week. Moore was the Bears' 1971 rookie of the year. Wyatt's replacement will be Tom Myers, in his second year from Syracuse.

The Saints' running game has been a weak spot throughout the preseason and North went to the trading block to gel experienced help. Miss Whitworth, who carded an even-par 72 Friday in the first round of the 54-holc tournament on the (i, 174-yard course at Leawood South Country Club, has a one-stroke lead over Mrs. Gerda Boykin.

Mrs. Boykin. first-round co-leader with Mary Horner, shot a 73 Saturday for a 3fi-hole total of 143. Mrs. Horner had a 78 to drop back in the pack of 50 entrants at 148.

Betsy Cullen carded a 71 Saturday to move into third place at 144 and Bettv Bur- feindt shot a 70 to take over fourth at 143. Jane Blalock and Sandra Palmer are tied at 14li with five contestants bunched at 147. Miss Whitworth, who won last week in Dallas for her (17th tournament victory, contends she still hasn't fully emerged from a slump that started during the summer. However, she posted an eagle three on the Kith to move to within striking distance. Miss Whitworth used a three-wood and a three-iron to set up a two-foot putt, which she rammed in.

Miss Whitworth took the lead only when the German-born Mrs. Boykin, who has never won a tourney in her seven years on the LPGA tour, took a double bogey six on the final hole. Mrs, Boykin, under the improved lie rule, elected to place her ball on a muddy tuft of grass and used a wedge for the fid-foot shot to pin on the third stroke on the hole.
