The firemen residing in the W. H. It George Herndon, imcfi L. White, Mr. Powell, James Mr.

Tripp and J. B. Choice. are anxious to have large fire bel! erected in that ward. They com- plain that, whilothc fire alarm telegraph works to a charm, yet when the wind is westerly it is impossible for those west of St.

John's Church to hear that. bell. They further otatc that as the roof of the church is higher than the bell, the sound is in a measure cut off from those living west of it. Correction. In the report of the Justices' Courts in yesterday's NEWS, the case of State vs.

J. B. charged with theft, was correct so far as the fact of that charge being made, bnt the evidence showed the facts of the cose were cntirc- lv different; they are as follows: A debtor of Mr. Biron wished to leave his place 'of business without paying him the amount, promising to liquidate the bill some time in the dim future, upou Mr. B.

asking him for security he left a traveling-bag with him until he should pay the bill. The man then went to Justice Gilbert's office and preferred the above charge. It is needless to remark that as soon as the facts of the case were zbnwn Mr. Biron was honorably acquitted of the charge and the costs thrown on the complainant. Station Notes.

The author, after reviewingall the diJtcrcnt theories hitherto in vogue, distinctly repudiates the notion thai volcanoes are in communication with center of the earth. The real cause of eruptions, he says, is still a mystery. The modern -hypothesis, which supposes the center of the earth to be solid, but enveloped by a stratum ot rocks in.

a state of aqueous fusion, over which lies the 'hardened crust we 'inhabit, answers pritty nearly to facts bi ought to light by recent investigation. not to be doubted that eruptions are owing to a struggle between the vapors contained in the volcanic focus and the" masses of lava that stop their issue. These will absorb a large quantity of the former, but in tbe end they get saturated, and the remaining vapors force a passage to the terrestrial surface. The of these vapors is stated to be in the sea, which provides the volcanic focus with the requisite In support of this view the author to the- fact that active vol'- canoes are almost exclusively situated near a sea-coast. I was cot free from doubt as to what I ought to do.in relation to It, as-may be seen from my remarks when thc bill was pending. I'ut the- occasion was a grand anil momentous one to our whole people. Most of ihe Suucs and 'tome of the "cities of the Union were appropriating money to celebrate the ccntcnm.il anniversary of the'Declaration of American Independence. indeed most, of Ihc civilized powers of the" earth were appropriating and expending monc for thc same purpose; and it would htive been Urnnsc spectacle for thc government of thc United Suites to be tlie only one of the great li-owers of the earth-which could aot, of would" not, aid in Uic celebration of thf event by which it spoken into existence and which had led to a national growth, expansion and progress in population, wealth, intelligence, enterprise ami civil and rc- iigious liberty unexampled iu the world's history. Besides this, the peculiar political condition of Texas and the other South- States to the Union the restoration of fraternal good-will between ill the Slates, and the breaking down of sectional animosities and the prejudices engendered by the war, a matter of importance to them.

And true wisdom requires that our people nml heir representatives should constantly JCiit this in mind.
