(UPI)-Its stained glass windows have rattled from the hell and damnation of fiery evangelist Billy Sunday and the brassy 'jazz of Duke Ellington's horn. Perched on a stool, poet Rod McKuen talked of "Stanyan Street" in his rasping voice at the center of the old stage.

Pop singer Neil said performing there was a dream come true. No, it's not Carnegie Hall. Each year, the aging tabernacle is filled with barnyard smells as tobacco chewing men in bib overalls herd white-face cattle on the stage for the annual Herford sale. Long ago, acrtess Sarah bernhardt performed "Camille" on the same platform. Helen Keller, champion of her sightless and deaf people, has sat in the curve-back pews as has the vice president of the United States, Spiro Every Friday at 11 p.m., Rev.

Jimmy Snow, son of country music singer Hank Snow, preaches in the red-brick structure built near the heart of this by a river boat gambler named Capt. Tom Ryman. It is haunted with the memories of Williams, Patsy Cline, Cowboy and Hawkshaw Hawkins, fallen hillbilly heroes of yesteryear. It's called Ryman Auditorium, but it's better known throughout the growing Kat Hepburn debuts on TV By United Press International Katharine Hepburn will make her television dramatic debut during the 1973-74 season in a new two hour film version of Tennessee Williams' first big play, "The Glass Menagerie." She will, of course, play Amanda Wingfield, the aging southern woman who dreams of a happy past and hopes for betterment of a drab present. "Alice Through the Looking Glass" is a 90-minute mucical version of the Lewis Carroll classic, "Through the Looking Glass," that NBC will reprise on Nov.

22. Nashville Sound country music kingdom as the Grand Ole Opry House. In the bulldozers may reduce it to pile of dust and rubble. National Life and Accident owner of WSM radio which spreads the gospel of country music via the opry to the heartlands of America, is building a new opry house which will open next a at its a A entertainment complex here. The new opry house will be modern.

Unlike the old, it will have air conditioning, comfortable seats and every customer in the place will have a clear view of the stage. However, some say, it will not be "The Opry." As for the present building, the one located across the street from the Crazy Horse Gift Shop, New York stage expert Joe Mielziner said it wasn't worth saving because it was "full of bad workmanship." Built in 1891, the building has been alive with country music since the opry moved in 23 years ago. It has never, however, been an empty, sleeping giant. In its heyday, the present country music showcase hosted perfoi mances by such show biz greats as Tallulah Bankhead, Nelson Eddy and even Helen Hayes. Famed orator William Jennings Bryan said he had never spoken in a building with better accoustical qualitites.

When New Yorker Neil Diamond, writer-performer of such pop hits as "Song Sun Blue" and "I Am, I Said," learned he could rent the Ryman for a show, he said he was thrilled. Opry Manager Bud Wendell said there were quite a few stage shows that warm up in places i Nashville's Ryman before heading toward Broadway. But it's mostly concert activity now, he said. As Conny Van Dyke, a new country singer who has never had a chance to play the Opry House, puts it, "The ghost of people like Hank Williams is there. "I just have to sing on that same stage before its torn down." 1974 Call Us Now for 1974 Cars or Trucks.
