Yeager Dec. 16 Though the number of paid teacher aides is still small, the Federal Education Acts are providing for experimental projects in training parents for jobs in the classroom. Assigned Professional Tasks The NEA study reveals that volunteer aides, probably because of their better educational background, are generally assigned more professional tasks in the library, reading aloud, story telling and tutoring students. Although parents are coming into the classroom in greater numbers, most schools still don't use their parents in enough meaningful ways.

The mother who volunteers for school duty may be assigned typing, but she may be a dancer who, with encouragement, could spend her volunteer time leading dance sessions for students. The school questionnaires that are sent home each fall to solicit parents' help should leave room for parents' own ideas on how they can help. Schools have to learn to encourage parents to give their best, to overcome parents' shyness and modesty. Parents with expertise in widely varying fields should be invited to speak with small groups of students and not to large assembly groups where no one gets to ask questions. Community Coordinator Every school could use a community coordinator to seek out these people and match them with school needs.

Using these parents will not only provide more individual attention for the students but also give the helpers themselves a sense of satisfaction and participation in the school. Parents who want to help are cautioned not to rush into the principal's office with an "I know what's wrong and I can fix it for you" attitude. Any principal-one who's doing a good job or one who's scared he isn't-will resent an "I know it all" attitude from parent who has never faced a class. Parents will do better to work around the school first in various capacities to find out what the school needs and how they can help most.
