From left front: Becky Leick, Jenny Watkins, Clara The Tri-County BPW Club entertained with a gala 30th birthday dinner at Howard Johnson's last Thursday evening, October 20. This was the highlight of a week filled with various activities in ob- servance of National Business Professional Woman's Week. Corbin's honored women for the week's activities were Mable Hood, Wilma Pen- nington, Orpha Mae Baker, Mary Elizabeth Dunn, Norma T. Burgan, Jessie Gabbard and Alpha Mae Stansberry.

At the birthday dinner, Dewte Wilson, vice president, presided over the meeting in the absence of the president, Betty Perkins. Before a most delicious dinner was served, Darlene Grubb gave the club collect and Princess McBurney led the group in saying the pledge to the American flag. Another highlight of the evening was the cutting of the traditional birthday cake by Clara Parker, a past president of the club. Mrs. Parker has cut the cake every year.

After the cutting of the cake, Evelyn' 'Lawson had the honor of naming Alpha Mae Stansberry a "Woman of Achievement." Alpha Mae is a past president of the club and is well known to everyone. Mrs. Lawson, in telling all about Mrs. Stan- sberry, stated that she is also a busy housewife, mother, grandmother, club woman and church woman. She is active in politics and is still concerned with P.T.A., committee work in education, with her sorority, and maintains an interest in Felts Elementary School, where she retired last year as principal after 30 years.

Alpha Mae taught school and went to University of Mexico and later attended Eastern University and graduated with a B.A. degree, and the U.K. where she received her M.A. She recieved her M.A. without going to school a complete year doing it by teaching a semester, going to school a semester, summer school, night courses and Saturday classes.

This is only one example of her drive. Her complete teaching career spans 42 years. She and Russell Stansberry, retired groceryman, have four children and eight grandchildren. These young people hold her in great love, respect and admiration. Alpha Mae is a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church where she is a Sunday School teacher, chairman of coordination committee for kindergarten, and a member of W.M.U.

Alpha Mae has many distinctions, but to mention two will have to suffice for the present. She had the honor of being named the first "Mother of the Year" in Corbin. To be a woman school principal is a unique and worthy attainment also. We slute you, Alpha Mae Stansberry, as Woman of Achievement for 1977.
