Met'aen Says Franchise To Patapsco Co. Means Savins To City. In a letter to the Board of Estimates "yesterday morning. Superintendent of Lamps and Lighting McCuen urged that a franchise be granted the Patapsco Electric and Manufacturing Company, so that there might be competition in supplying the city with current for lighting purposes. The letter states that by the terms of the company's offer the city would save over annually.

Not only does the Consolidated Gas Elco-trie Light and Power Company, says Mr. McCuen, exact certain conditions from the city in return for its rate in municipal buildings, but even that rate is excessive, He says the city has been paying from 3 to 6 cents per kilowatt hour for its current from the Consolidated, while the Patapsco offers the current for 2 cents per kilowatt hour and Imposes no restrictions. While it is true, adds Mr. McCuen, that the Consolidated company gives a sliding rate from 3 to 6 cents for municipal lighting, the rate applies only where more than 20.000 kilowatt hours per month are used. There are only two buildings the City Hall and Courthouse which use that amount.

By he proposed rate of the Patapsco Company the city would save $3,334 a year on lighting the City Hall and Courthouse and more than $12,000 on other municipal lighting. Not only would there be this saving to the city, declares Mr. McCuen, but the company would also pay the city a large revenue In taxes on the property It would be obliged to acquire. The present contract with the Consolidated Company will expire June 1. The letter was referred by the Board of Estimates to the City Council.

The members of the board say they have no authority to act without an ordinance. When the letter goes to the Council Monday it will be accompanied by a letter from the Mayor urging action. FRANCIS K. CAREY WINS Suit Affalnsit Him And Associates Resulted From Stock Deal. A verdict for Mr. Francis K. Carey, the well-known lawyer; his business partner, Mr.

James Piper, and Mr. William P. Crenshaw was rendered by a jury In the City Court yesterday in the suit brought against them by Messrs. J. C.

M. Lucas and H. P. Lucas, trading as J. C.

M. Lucas Co. The verdict was rendered under the instructions of Judge Dobler. The case grew out of the employment In 1903 of Messrs. Carey and Piper by the Roanoke Railway and Electric Company to purchase the capital stock of the Roanoke Water Power Company.

The purchase was made for $050,000. Messrs. Carey and Piper had associated with them Mr. Crenshaw, and upon the successful conclusion of the negotiations gave him $3,000 of the $23,000 which they received. The plaintiffs claimed that Mr.

Crenshaw and Messrs. Carey and Piper were under obligations to them for a share in the compensation and that the payment by Messrs. Carey and Piper to Mr. Crenshaw did not discharge that obligation. All of the defendants testified that the plaintiffs had no interest in the matter, and after hearing the testimony of both sides the Court took this view and Instructed the Jury to bring In a verdict for Mr.

Crenshaw and Messrs. Carey and Piper. The case was tried by Attorneys William L. Marbury and Preston Bowie for the plaintiffs, Ritchie Janney for Messrs. Carey and Piper, and Alfred J.

Catr for Mr. Crenshaw. HAD MIXED Man Makes Charge At Xorthern; Dismissed At Roland Park. "While I was locked up at this station house a sergeant came to the cell door early this morning and told me he would release me if I gave hm $5. did so and was permitted to walk out.

Now I am here to be tried," was the startling statement made at the Northern Police Station yesterday afternoon by a man who said he was John Gourlcy, a bookkeeper, living at 2743 West North avenue. The statement was made to Justice Jo-hannsen, who looked on the docket to find the name given. It was not there, and the magistrate turned to Lieutenant Kalb-fleisch, who 'immediately began, an investigation. Captain Moxley was called, and the two officers looked up the arrests and asked Gourley if he was sure he was in the right place. lie replied that he was and that he had been under the influence of liquor when arrested.

A telephone call was made to the station houses throughout the city to ascertain If Gourley had been locked up in another district. The answer was the same from all, to the effect that no one by that name had been arrested. The Captain then communicated with the Roland Park policw, who said a man giving the same name and atldress had been arrested and taken to the Roland Park station at midnight Monday. The county police said the prisoner had left $5 collateral for his appearance at 6 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Gourley was told to go to Roland Park.

He did so and the charge against him was dismissed. His money waa returned to him after he realized he had been "la the rht cburoh but the wrong pew."
