From there, Lamonica hit Smith near the right sideline at the 2 and Smith stepped in the end zone past Kansas City safety Johnny Robinson. A 30-yard field goal by George Blanda gave the Raiders- a precarious 3-0 lead in the first half and the Chiefs missed a chance to tie it up in the second quarter when Jan Stenerud, who last week kicked five field goals to set a pro record of 16 in a row, missed one from 38 yards. It was a 51-yard punt by Mike Eischeid and the tenacious Raider defense that set up the lone Raider touchdown. The Chiefs, who had been unable to move well in the third quarter, now went for their only touchdown of the game.

After Wendell Hayes returned the kickoff 35 yards to his own 38, Dawson moved Kansas City 62 yards in 15 plays and Hayes went over from the 1 on fourth down with 5:30 remaining. The Chiefs needed a victory, however, as a tie would have given the title to the Raiders. Mike Garrett tried a two-point conversion up the middle but was stopped by the bulk of the Raider line. The Chiefs never got the ball back, as the Raiders put on a sustained drive down the field and the game ended with Oakland on Kansas City's 7-yard line. Both teams kept the ball on the ground in the first quarter, but on the last play of the period, with the Raiders on their own 16, Lamonica threw a bomb.

Warren Wells caught the ball some 50 yards downfield on the right sideline and made it to the Kansas City 12 before Ri-binson tripped him up. However, the Chiefs held Hew-ritt Dixon to three yards in the next two plays and then smeared Lamonica trying to pass. Blanda's field goal followed. (AP) All American tailback Bob Anderson barreled through Alabama's defense for three touchdowns and more than 250 yards rushing Saturday as Colorado whipped the Crimson Tide 47-33 points.

With a second down and seven situation at the Bucs' 34, linebacker Bubba Tims blitzed through and chased Bradshaw all the way back to the Tech 48 for an 18-yard loss. An incomplete pass forced the Bulldogs to punt, and they were never able to crank up their offense again as ETSU drove 88 yards after the punt for its fourth TD to all but seal the victory. Many Big Stars Defensive end Ron Mendheim, linebacker Doug Linebarger and the entire defensive secondary made up of Bill Casey, Marcus Waters, Jerry Weston and Al Guy were the leaders of the tenacious ETSU defense, and mainly through their efforts were the Bucs able to control matters throughout. While the defense was shining, ETSU's offense didn't just sit back and take things easy. When Tech applied its pressure in the third period, the Bucs would come right back and eat up both the clock and yardage to completely demoralize the Bulldog fans who made the trip to Baton Rouge envisioning another NCAA title.

The statistics bear out just how thoroughly the Bucs dominated play. Tech managed a 17-15 edge in first downs, but ETSU controlled a 240, minus 55 advantage in ground yardage yard sprint nullified by a penalty. The big Buffalo tailback frequently broke for runs of 20 or more yards, running over Alabama defenders almost at will. Fullback Ward Walsh scored two touchdowns for Colorado on runs of 13 and 15 yards. Dave Haney booted a 30-yard field goal and added six extra points as Colorado, a one-point favorite, boosted its bowl record to 3-1.

Colorado Alabama and fared quite well in the passing department, trailing 299-146. Quarterback Larry Graham hit on 8-of-13 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns, while halfback Mike Young completed his only toss, a 37-yard TD strike to split end Pat Hauser. Running backs Jerry Daughtry and Young both picked large chunks of real estate running the ball. Daughtry gained 104 yards and Young 95. Tech's leading rusher was fullback Buster Herren, who gained 43 yards on 13 carries.

Daughtry First Daughtry scored ETSU's first touchdown early in the first period when he dived over from the one to climax a short 19 yard drive that was set by a Bradshaw fumble. Young's pass to Hauser accounted for the second ETSU touchdown, and in the third period Young went in from the five. The final two touchdowns came on passes, the first to John Gibson that covered 19 yards-, and the final 'one to end Rick Anderson. Both were 29 of reserve quarterback Neb Hayden, who hurled touchdown passes of 55 yards to Griff Lang-ston and 10 yards to Johnny Musso to give Alabama a 33-31 lead in the middle of the quarter. Colorado, which pushed Alabama all over the field in the first 18 minutes, stunned the Tide with a razzle-dazzle 91-yard kickoff return just before half time.

Steve Engel bolted down the right sideline after taking a handoff on the kickoff. The defeat was the third straight for Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's Crimson Tide in bowl games.
