Fullback Craig Turner scored twice on one-yard dives and Walter Lewis hit Joey Jones on a 28-yard touchdown pass Saturday, lifting ninth-ranked Alabama to a 20-12 football victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Mississippi State held out hope for a tie In the dying seconds, driving from Its 13-yard line to the Alabama six as time ran out. The Bulldogs, with no time outs left, could not stop the clock for a last bid for a touchdown and two point conversion that would have earned a tie.

Lewis found the 5-foot-9 Jones in the end zone late in the third quarter for a 20-9 lead that propelled the Crimson Tide to the Southeastern Conference victory, dealing Mississippi State its sixth straight loss. Turner's plunges, giving the 196-pound sophomore 1 1 touchdowns for the season, capped two 80-yard drives one in the second quarter and another in the third period. The triumph gave Alabama a 7-1 record, 3-1 in the SEC, while Mississippi State fell to 3-6 and 0-4. Dana Moore kicked field goals of 21 and 43 yards for Mississippi State and fullback Henry Koontz scored on a one-yard leap in the third quarter. Georgia's two-time All-American tailback Her-schel Walker ran for 219 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to shatter the Southeastern Conference career scoring record as the unbeaten and third-ranked Bulldogs swept to a 34-3 victory over Memphis State, extending the Tiger losing streak to 1 5, longest In the nation among major colleges. Walker, who also moved up to sixth on the all-time NCAA rushing list with 4,701 yards, scored on runs of 21 yards in the second quarter and broke the SEC career scoring mark on a two-yard plunge 5:23 into the final quarter. Walker now has a total of 272 points, breaking the previous record of 269 set by former Georgia place-kicker Rex Robinson during the 1977-80 seasons.

Georgia's other scoring came on a three-yard scamper In the second quarter by John Lastlnger as the Bulldogs, 8-0, took a 17-3 halftlme lead. Kevin Butler added a pair of field goals of 21 and 25 yards and substitute Scott Williams hit Herman Archie with a 31-yard scoring pass in the closing minutes for Georgia's other scoring. Memphis States, 0-8, could manage only a 44-yard field goal by Thomas Ingles as time ran out in the first half. Walker, who now has 1,194 rushing yards this season, moved from ninth to sixth on the NCAA list, passing Terry Miller of Oklahoma State, Ted Brown of North Carolina State and Marcus Allen of Southern California. The 220-pound junior, who had his seventh 200-yard-plus rushing game of his career, needs only 15 yards to move ahead of Cornell's Ed Mari-naro, who had 4,715 yards.

A swarming Louisiana State defense set up three early scores and freshman tall-backs Dalton Hllllard and Garry James scored five touchdowns as the 13th-ranked Tigers (6-0-1, 3-0-1) ripped Mississippi (3-5, 0-4) 45-8 in a Southeastern Conference game. With scouts from seven post-season bowl games looking on, Louisiana State's defense dominated from the opening play.

On the kickoff, Steve Cunningham fumbled and Mitch Andrews recovered for LSU at the Rebel 16. On the next play, Hllllard ran up the middle for a touchdown. Hllllard, who finished with 123 yards in 23 carries, added a one-yard touchdown run late In the first quarter and James scored on runs of two yards, four yards, and one yard. Fumble recoveries set up the first three touchdowns and the Tigers led 24-0 four minutes into the second quarter. Ole Miss had a minus 34 yards offense at halftlme.

Fullback Mike Montz had LSU's other touchdown on a two-yard run In the final minute before halftlme. Mississippi drove 69 yards in 1 0 plays In the final minutes with Arthur Humphrey running one yard for a touchdown. The Rebs got the two-point conversion on a Kent Austin-to-Mlchael Harmon pass. 1 A AP West Georgia 41, Central Florida 7 ORLANDO West Georgia quarterback David Archer passed for two touchdowns and scampered for another as the Braves (7-0) scalped the Knights of Central Florida (0-8) 41-7. A crowd of 9,257 in the Tangerine Bowl watched Central Florida drop its eighth straight game, as West Georgia dominated the contest from the start.

The score was 20-0 by halftlme, and West Georgia played its subs against Central Florida in the waning moments, and managed to score. The only touchdown for Central Florida came on a 36-yard pass from Dana Thyhsen to Mike Collier, with 10:17 to play In the game. Scott Ryer-son made good the extra point. It was a gloomy homecoming for Central Florida, as the visitors piled up 585 yards offense, a record against the Knights. Central Florida only managed 195 total yards, with only 17 yards coming out of its ground game.

Tulane 30, Baylor 15 NEW ORLEANS Senior quarterback Mike McKay threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns to lead Tulane (3-5) to a 30-15 victory over Baylor (2-5-1) in an intersectional game. Sophomore Tony Wood booted field goals of 26 yards, 49 yards, and 32 yards for Tulane and had a 43-yard attempt partially blocked and fell short. McKay's first two touchdown passes came in the first five minutes of play a 16-yarder to tailback Mike Jones and a 42-yarder to tight end Greg Stopher. His third touchdown pass came three minutes into the final quarter. It was a 15-yarder to wide receiver Reggie Butts.

Baylor's scores came on a 46-yard pass from Mike Brannan to wide receiver Gerald McNeil In first quarter and an 11-yard pass from David Mangrum to fullback Allen Rice with just over seven minutes to play. Both Baylor's scores involved unusal plays. Southern Mississippi 36, Southwest Louisiana I HATTIESBURG, Miss. Tell-back Sam Dejarnette, Southern Mississippi's new single-season single rushing leader, scored one touchdown and piled up 179 yards in 31 carries to give the Golden Eagles (6-3) a 36-0 football victory over Southwestern Louisiana (3-5). Dejarnette now has 1,257 yards for the season, eclipsing the old record of 1,236 set by Ben Gary In 1976.

Steve Clark opened the scoring for the Eagles when he hit a 20-yard field goal late In the first quarter. The drive leading to the three points coverd 86 yards on 22 plays as USM held the ball for eight minutes, 36 seconds. Quarterback Reggie Collier got Southern's first touchdown just 22 seconds before halftlme. Collier danced into the end zone from the four-yard-line to cap a 47-yard drive. Safety Bud Brown set up the TD when he stole a Cajun pass at the USM two and returned it to the Cajun 47.

Rutgers 20, Richmond 14 RICHMOND, Va. Quarterback Jack LaPrarle ran for two touchdowns and Alex Falclnelll kicked two field goals as Rutgers' Scarlet Knights (4-3) built a 20-0 lead, then held on for a 20-14 football victory over Richmond's wlnless Spiders (0-8). Rutgers put the game away only when strong safety Bob Clampagllo Intercepted a Napoleon DuBols pass with 2:31 left after Richmond had driven to the Scarlet Knights' 21. MEMPHIS STATE'S Walker broke off 10th ft 7 Richard Myles tossed a 19-yard scoring strike to tight end Charles Coleman In the second period. Florida Carl Williams gave the Rattlers a 13-7 halftlme advantage when he booted field goals of 30 and 32 yards.

Green put the Braves ahead for good with field goals of 31, 43 and 38 yards in the fourth quarter for a 16-13 advantage. Alcorn marched down the field in the final period and Toy capped the drive with his 12-yard scoring run. Toy led all rushers with 140 yards on 23 carries. Senior tailback Emory Collier led the Rattlers with 71 yards on 12 carries. Koonce completed five of 20 passes for 63 yards while Myles completed 1 0 of 25 passes for 1 34 yards.

The Blue Devils surged to a 21-0" halftlme lead and saw Tech trim the margin to 10 points before putting together a clinching 80-yard scoring drive in the final quarter. Bennett's touchdown passes covered 37 yards to Chris Castor, six to Scott Russell and 13 to Mark Milltel-lo. Bennett started the fourth-quarter drive that put the game out of reach with a 21-yard pass to Milltello. Mike WILLIE JOYNER LEAVES DEFENDERS IN HIS WAKE the Maryland back scored on a 49-yard touchdown run Grayson, who had 173 yards on 29 carries, had runs of 17 and 13 yards to set up the two-yard scoring plunge by Joel Blunk with 9:09 left in the game.

Grayson scored Duke's last on a one-yard run with 23 seconds remaining in the game. John Tolish also contributed a 25-yard field goal for Duke, which whipped the Yellow Jackets for the sixth time In seven years and cut Tech's series lead to 25-24-1. Jim Bob Taylor's passing carried Tech's attack most of the day as he threw for 298 yards and keyed drives of 83 and 63 yards that ended on Robert Lavette's scoring runs of three and one yards. Taylor completed a 48-yard drive with only 4:02 left in the game when he connected with Mike Harrington on a 15-yard touchdown pass. Stanford Glenn and Mike Lewis combined for 263 yards rushing and three touchdowns as The Citadel (4-4, 2-2) defeated Marshall (2-6, 0-4) 24-7 in a Southern Conference clash. Glenn, who had 129 yards in the game, capped a 71-yard drive for the Bulldogs with a three-yard run in the first period. Hank Rhame added the PAT to make the score 7-0. Rhame pushed the score to 10-0 with a 44-yard field goal on the Bulldogs' initial possession of the second half. A tenacious Bulldog defense held the Marshall attack In check throughout the afternoon.

Interceptions by Glenn Nelson and Danny Fahringer ended potential scoring threats by the Thundering Herd. Marshall's lone score came on a 25-yard Interception return by Glenn Bates in the fourth quarter. Lewis, who ran for 134 yards, scored a pair of touchdowns in the final period. Lewis ran two yards to complete a nine-play, 85-yard drive to make the score 17-7. He escaped down the sidelines for a 71-yard touchdown in the final minute of play to close out the scoring for the Bulldogs.

West Virginia 30, East Carolina 3 MORGANTOWN, West Virginia Curlln Beck ran for two first-quarter touchdowns and Paul Woodside kicked three field goals to lead 18th-ranked West Virginia (6-2) to a 30-3 victory over East Carolina (4-4). Beck, a senior tailback, ran eight yards for the Moutalneers' first touchdown as West Virginia drove 80 yards following the opening kickoff. King Harvey ran for a two-yard touchdown on the Mountaineers' next possession and when West Virginia then recovered an East Carolina fumble at the Pirate 11, Beck made it 21-0 with a one-yard plunge. Paul Woodside became West Virginia's career field goal leader by hitting from 24,25 and 38 yards in the second half. In 12 games, Woodside has kicked 27 field goals.

He has made 19 of 22 attempts this season. East Carolina scored its only points on a 30-yard field goal By The Associated Press CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Willie Joyner rushed for a school record 240 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead Maryland to a 31-24 Atlantic Coast Conference football upset over lOth-ranked North Carolina Saturday. Joyner's 16 carries Included a 84-yard scoring run with 7:31 remaining that clinched the Terrapins' sixth straight victory and raised their record to 6-2, 4-0 in the ACC. With North Carolina leading 24-17, Joyner tied the score on a 49-yard run with 13:11 remaining to cap an 80-yard, three-play scoring drive.

After North Carolina could manage only one first down on Its next possession, David Lowe punted to the Maryland seven with 9:05 left. Joyner gained three yards and Dave D'Addio picked up six more to move the ball to the 16. Joyner took a han-doff from quarterback Boomer Esla-son and was hit behind the line of scrimmage before breaking that tackle and rushing through three other tackles en route to the longest scoring run of his career. Joyner's total snapped the school record of 237 yards gained by George Scott against Villanova in 1977. Maryland rushed for 320 yards against a Tar Heel defense ranked first against the run and which had previously allowed a high of 72 yards to then-top-ranked Pittsburgh.

The Terrapins finished with 486 yards in total offense against the nation's top-ranked defense. North Carolina, now 5-2, 2-1 in the ACC, led 17-10 following Brooks Barwick's 29-yard field goal at the 5:44 mark In the third period. Maryland quickly tied it with another 80-yard, 3-play drive which ended on D'Addio's 18-yard touchdown run at the 4:48 mark of the third period. The big play of that drive was a 55-yard gain by Joyner. North Carolina took its last lead 10 seconds into the final period when quarterback Rod Elkins threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Bryant.

Elkins, who missed the last three games with a knee injury, also threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Bryant and a 68-yarder to Mark Smith. Bryant finished with 130 yards in 34 carries as he moved into fourth place on North Carolina's career rushing list. Bryant now has 2,722 yards, surpassing Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice who ended his career with 2,634. Maryland N. Following the kickoff, N.C. State iced the game when Frank Bush made a diving interception of Gordon Beckham's pass at the South Carolina 26 on the first play following Avery's score. Three plays later, Miller went in for his final touchdown. Don Wilson accounted for the final score when he intercepted another Beckham pass and went 24 yards for the score with 8:56 left Wolfpack kicker Mike Cofer missed his first two point-after touchdown kicks but hit his last three.
