TWO THE DAILY MAIL, HAGERSTOWN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1939. CLYDE BEATTY CLUB SPEAKER Famed Animal Trainer Addresses Rotary Club At Luncheon. Clyde Beatty, world famous ani- mil trainer and showman, appear- inf this week at the Hagerstown Fair, was Rotary's guest and speaker yesterday for the weekly luncheon at the Hotel Alexander. Mr. Beatty delivered no formal nor prepared talk but conducted meeting IL tne manner of a forum, answering all questions "that the club members cared to him.

Tha noted lion and tiger trainer "was literally deluged with ques- tiont and it was with reluctance that the group permitted him to leave. Among the interesting facts giv- by Mr. Beatty -was itate- jnent that ha entered at the age of 17 when lie ran away to join the circus. He been in the hospital more than a dozen times as the result of maulings received from the ani- mals he trains and on the last oc- casion it was a siege of sixteen weeks. average life of the tigers in his show is about three to four years.

This is due not to any in- ability of the animals to acclimate themselves but the fact that in fights which frequently occur between the lions and tigers the 'tigers are almost invariably'killed. While Mr. Beatty has twenty-four lions and tigers as well as three elephants in Hagerstown, he has appeared in the cage with as many as 42. This number was reduced not because of the danger but be- cause with so manr of the huge cats in the cage the spectators could see nothing of their trainer. Their diet consists of seventeen pounds of, raw meat daily with milk and eggs once a week.

This together with the fact that a tiger costs, about $1200 dollars, ele- phants about $3000 and lions while much cheaper than tigers, still represent a considerable invest- ment, five some idea of ex- of assembling and running a shoTT.like Mr. Beatty's. The in- of tigers is re- sponsible for their greater cost. basis of the trainer's controller the cats do not learn to "humans, said Mr. Beatty.

One man was taken into custody for investigation, another got away and several women were sought.

Detective Peters said the strang- ers appeared at the stores with new merchandise, asked to have it ex- changed and received cash in re- turn. Peters said the merchandise had apparently been stolen in stores elsewhere which bear the same name as the local mercantile es- tablishments. Most of the goods bore the firm names.
