Buchanan said a seven-member screening committee of educators filtered the applicants, judging them on their professional preparation, the creativity of their answers, their communications skills, community and extra-curricular student involvement and the grammatical accuracy of their answers. "It wasn't terribly esoteric, just people looking at people," she said. The five Florida teachers are: Suzanne M. Ackley, fifth- and sixth-grade teacher from Brookshire Elementary School in Winter Park.

Hugh C. Allen, science teacher from Southwest Miami Senior High School. Susan W. Forte, agriculture tea cher from George Stone Vocational Center in Pensacola. Margaret Peek, science teacher, Gulf Comprehensive High School in New PortRichey.

The shuttle flight that will carry a teacher into space is scheduled for early 1986. Officials of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have yet to decide which of the three shuttles will be used.

President Reagan last year called for a teacher to be included as a shuttle crew member. A teacher would be the ideal person to describe space travel, he said. All of the applicants had to agree to taking a year's sabbatical, touring the lecture circuit for NASA, after the shuttle flight. They also are required to develop an experiment to TALLAHASSEE (AP) One of the five Florida teachers chosen as quarterf inalists for the NASA Teacher in Space Project may get the chance to ride into orbit, Commissioner of Education Ralph Turlington said Thursday. The five were skimmed from 400 applicants from around Florida, said Nan Buchanan, who coordinated the state selection effort for Turlington.

In May, after a series of interviews, two of the five will join 98 other preliminary picks two from each state. From them, 10 finalists will be chosen to undergo rigorous physical and psychological exams and federal background checks be DOT chief to retire this summer TALLAHASSEE (AP) -Florida Transportation Secretary Paul Pappas will retire this summer after 30 years of service to the agency, officials confirmed Thursday. Pappas, 52, who became DOT chief in late 1981, said he will seek another line of work. "I've talked to the governor and I've indicated to him that I will be retiring late this summer," Pappas said earlier. "I feel I'm young enough and my health is good enough that I have the opportunity to pursue a second career." Pappas said he hadn't decided what the second job will be, but "something inside tells me to do something different not engineering-related." A possible replacement for Pappas is Tom Lewis assistant secretary, but Lewis said he was unsure what would happen.

"I'll do whatever the governor asks me to do," he said. DOT spokesman Ken Klein said neither a date for Pappas departure nor a list of possible successors has been compiled. He did say Pappas would leave after his 30-year retirement benefits become effective. NEUROLOGY ASSOCIATES OF LEE COUNTY Is please to announce the opening of MEL 111 THERMOGRAPHY SERVICES, IiNC.
