ALEXANDRIA DAILY TOWN TALK, ALEXANDRIA-PINEVILLE, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1962 Ccts Edgo Jax 8-7 PAGE TWELVE Sophomore Corley Eases Loss of Seniors yards for the score. Most important though, was his run for the two-pointer which brought the Cats their victory. Corley did again Saturday night in La. College's close 8-7 victory Jacksonville State College of Alabama. After a frustrating three quarters in which the Cats found themselves on the short end of a 7-0 score, the Cats came to life in the fourth quarter as Corley provided the spark.

Corley, who in the last half of play out-rushed all other backs, ignited and sparked a 45-yard touchdown drive, capping it, himself, by blasting the final two By Tom Led Tewn Talk Sports Writer Though there are 13 seniors on this year's Louisiana College foot ball team, there's one sophomore who is partially the cause of a predicted rosy future for Coach Frank Young. The Cats now own a 44-1 record, and at least two of those victories came directly from this soph fullback's effort Just as he did several weeks ago in leading the Cats to victory over USL, Pineville's David Demons, Southeast Play for Title 'jF) Ts- jr" 134 over Louisiana Tech. In addition to the SLC-NSC game, McNeese will be at USL in their traditional finale Saturday, Northeast goes to Cleveland, to meet Delta State while Tech plays powerful Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg. SLC stuck mostly to the ground Saturday as it ran up a 21-0 lead on McNeese before the Cowboys retaliated with two last period touchdowns. Barry Nunez plunged for two touchdowns for ninth-ranked SLC and Dick Cothern flipped 4 yards to Jerry Joe Dunaway for the third.

Darrell Lester's 5-yard dash and Tommy Thompson's 2-yard scamper gave the Cowboys their two TD's. NSC, the pre-season GSC favorite, pounded out 347 yards along the ground and held USL to 52 rushing in their game at Natchitoches. Kenny Thompson, (Town Talk Staff Photoi) HEAD-ON Arlan Carter, Jacksonville State's Little All-American halfback, is met head on by La hard-nosed halfback, Billy Baucum, in Cats' final home game of season. Carter scored a touchdown, but LC's David Corley did better as Cats won 8-7. Thirteen LC seniors played final game at Alumni Stadium.

That about tells the story of the next-to-last weekend in the Gulf States Conference football race as the traffic jam at the top cleared and Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State emerged as the two contenders for the 6SC title. The two leaders, each with 5-1 GSC records, clash Saturday night at Natchitoches for the title, won last year by McNeese. McNeese got its own prize Saturday an invitation to meet Howard College of Birmingham in the 1962 Golden Isles Bowl at Brunswick, Ga. The game is set for Nov.

Corley manned the throttle, piling up 74 yards, 73 of which came in the last two quarters, as the Cats rushed for 158 yards and picked up another 54 on four pass completions. In comparison, Jacksonville netted 129 yards on the ground and added 35 through tbe air. La. College's fourth-quarter TD drive resulted from an offensive outburst which had its beginnings in the third quarter. After Jacksonville scored with slightly better than seven minutes left in the third period, the Cats took the kickoft and marched to the distant 20 before losing on fumble when Corley bursted through for an 11-yard gain to the nine.

Jacksonville recovered and ran two plays before kicking to Trout-man who made a fair catch on the 45. It took the Cats 10 plays to score, the big ones on the drive being a 12-yard pass from Trout-man to end Marvin Holland that carried to the 28 and freshman Jerry Bray's 13-yard sprint that carried to the six. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy in an effort to end their feud and concentrate on a united effort for the 1964 Olympics.

Kennedy will sit in as unofficial mediator during the conference between representatives of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) at the Olympic House starting at 11 a EST. The attorney general called the same groups together in Wash ington last month because the government felt that continued strife between the NCAA and the AAU would ruin the U.S. Olym pic movement for the 1964 games in Tokyo. During the Washington confer' ence, which lasted two days, Ken nedy suggested that the NCAA and the AAU invoke a truce in their battle for the control of this nation's amateur sports at least until the end of the 1964 Olym Dies. When reports of the "secret" Washington conference were re vealed exclusively by United Press International last week, representatives of both bodies in dicated they would accept the government-proposed truce.
