Johnny Unitas Better Than Ever In Colt Finale Baltimore Passing Ace Shatters NFL Record CompUtvd 237 PIMM To Surpass Sonny Jurgoraon's Mark; Cofa Look To Futuro With Very High By GEORGE BOWEN BALTIMORE (AP) The funs of the Baltimore Colts start talking around the hot stove today. And an old log on the fire will keep them warm until next season. Quarterback John Unitas proved he isn't ready for the ash pile in Sunday's 1963 finish. From a statistical and artistic standpoint, he was better than ever. From an 1m modi ale viewpoint, the last three passes he' completed rewarded more than 50,000 ice bitten fans with a touchdown and a 19-16 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

They also gave him 237 for the most ever by a passer in the National Football League. The 30-year-old Unitas surpassed by two the record set by Sonny Jurgcnson with Philadcl- phia in 1961. Unitas, in addition to the number of his completions, also scaled new heights in his own eight year career. The 3,481 yards gained by his aerials and 57.8 per cent of attempts were high Individual marks. The 12 interceptions were only five more than in 1958, when he threw 147 fewer times.

They were reasons to give Coll fans a warm feeling about next year. Kor around Unilas, the Colts began to emerge late in the season as a real promise. They won five of their last six games under new coach Don Simla to wind up with an 8-6 slate, a one-game improvement over Woeh Ewbank's last season. During their early season up and down spell, the Colts exult- cd over such rookies as John Mackey and tackle Bob Vogcl on offense. But in the long run, it was couple of guys, Tom Matte and Jerry Hill, who had been around that made the offense really tick.

When Matte caught a Unilas pass on the 6, juggled it for a moment, and went into score the final winning touchdown against the Rams, he had climaxed a slow climb to stardom. Since drifted as a hot shot quarterback from Ohio State two years ago, Matte labored in the vineyards. Then he was more or less pressed into tight halfback because of injuries to Lenny Moore and Raymond Berry. He gained 122 rushing against the Rams, most by a Colt this season. He wound up not only as the leading rusher, but his 48 receptions were more than such ai Berry, Mackey and Jimmy Orr.

Hill also forced his way in as fullback shortly after the season started. Although this is his third aeason with the Colts, he really was a rookie. Due to injuries, be played in only one NFL game beforehand. Matte ran 31 yards for the only other Colt touchdown in the firs 1 period and Jim Martin, another fugitive from retirement, bootee two field goals in lifting them to a 13-3 a i lead. In between (he touch downs, the Colts did their tit most to avoid scoring.

Three times they fumbled inlo the cm zone and the Rams recovered Martin field goal atlempls from inside the 25 were blocked twice And a Unilas pass was inlcrccpt ed over the goal. But the Colt fans went homi remembering the finish--in th style of the 1958-59 champion ship years. With 1V4 minutes to play, trail ing 16-13, they recovered a funi hie on the Ram 40.
