S2730 NOW $645 PITTSBURGH (AP) Stormie Jones, a 6-year-old Texas girl who made history as the world's first heart-liver transplant recipient, opened her eyes Wednesday and responded to questions by nodding her head, her mothersaid. "I asked her if she was scared because we had to put on (face) masks, and she nodded yes," said Lois Jones, 27. Doctors at Children's Hospital said Stormie's donated organs appeared to be functioning normally. "Stormie appears to be following a standard course for both liver transplant patients and heart transplant patients," said Dr. Basil Zitelli, her pediatrician.

"She's breathing on her own, although still attached to a respirator. Her blood pressure is good, and she is being weaned from some of her heart medication," he said. The blond, brown-eyed girl from Cumby, Texas, was in critical but stable condition a day after the surgery, considered normal after transplant surgery. She would have died within a year without the operation, doctors said. "I told her that there were a lot of people out here praying for her," said Mrs.

Jones, who until the operation slept on a cot in her daughter's hospital room. They arrived in Pittsburgh on Jan. 2. "I've been up (to see Stormie) three times today," she said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by her fiance, Donnie Millsap. "Every time we go up we have to scrub our hands and put on a mask and cap, so I try not to go up too often.

But now that she's nodding and all, I'll be up there more and more." Stormie has gained consciousness intermittently since the 16-hour transplant operation ended at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The heart and liver were removed Monday from Katie Rebstock, 4, of Macedon, N.Y., who died earlier that day following an auto accident.
