There aren't really any major differences between the newscasts on the two stations, although the WINK news is presented more formally with less in-between stories chatter and the WBBH news seems to be presented with a slickness that WINK lacks. But there is only so much that you can do, within reason and good taste, with a news program and both stations appear to be striving to give the communities they serve the best that they can with the limited staffs and funds that they have. You can't compare a local news program to a network news show.

It just isn't fair. The networks have huge news staffs and a great deal of money to spend on their shows and local stations don't have an overabundance of either. Perhaps the reason why the two local news shows are so similar is that their news directors think along the same lines when it comes to defining news and what it takes to make a good news program. Phillips says, "News is any event that happens that would be of interest to the majority. Something outside of the routine.

What is normal or routine isn't news. It's when something happens outside of that routine that people look and say 'What's going Smith defines news as "The study of life, humanity, nature. The real world and all that goes along with it. It's here to be observed, analyzed and is cussed." And both men essentially agree on what makes a good newscast. PUBLIC SALE INDIAN JEWELRY 50 OFF Mm Television Today Yj Tampa Miami Tampa Ptteribure "The manner in which the news is delivered Is important," Phillips says.

"Also important is the way it's written, the visuals that go with it. Anchormen have to be believable. Viewers have to feel that if an anchorman has said something it can be believed. "The pacing of a news show is important. It should be varied and have a feeling of movement but when it's over, the audience should feel that it has heard all the important things that have happened." Smith says he believes that visualization is one of the main factors in a TV news program.

"We're communicating not only u'iih words," he says, "but with pictures as well. We have to get the message across and the viewers have to be able to see it as well as hear it. "And, of course, there are the basic tenets of journalism what, why, who, when and where. They're important in any story. "One of the major factors that goes into making a news program good is the on-air talent.

They have to be credible. They have to be able to establish a one-on-one relationship with each viewer and they have to present the news in an informal, casual and personal manner." Who will win the ratings battle? It's anybody's guess. WINK, in the number two position will undoubtedly try harder to become number one. And WBBH will not give up its psition without a tough battle. And while the battle rages on, and no matter which station comes out on top, it will be the public that ultimately benefits from the constant improvements and up-grading of the news shows.
