"I hear all about it. Read about it. But I had no idea it was so broad," said Terrell, 31, who was one of about 150 Calvary Baptist Church members who heard the Rev. Moody Adams describe secret satanic symbols on Sunday. Adams, a Baker evangelist, believes satanic signs can be found even in the Saturday morning cartoon The Smurfs, with its magic potions and spells.

Terrell and her husband, Steve Terrell, 32, said they attended the special town meeting to learn about the signs of satanic worship in order to recognize if anyone in their family becomes involved. "You wonder how they get into it, and how they get trapped in it. We want to know what to start looking for," Steve Terrell said. "You always think, it's out in California. It's not here." As audience members took notes and made their own drawings, Adams used an overhead projector to enlarge common satanic symbols on a screen and described their meanings.

Adams said the most common symbol is the pentagram, with its five-pointed star that represents the ram or goat, which is most often related to criminal activity. Another is the hexagram, a six-pointed star in a circle, which is used when putting spells or "hexes" on worshiper's enemies. Other common symbols are SATAN spelled backwards, the upside-down cross and an A in a circle, which stands for anarchy and rebellion against authority, Adams said. Symbols which have normal meanings and uses, such as the peace sign and the eye over the pyramid depicted on the dollar bill, also can be used by Satanists, Adams said. He cautioned parents not to overreact when finding satanic symbols among their children's belongings and urged parents to know what their children are reading and listening to.

"I think it's best to sit down and talk with them and ask them what it means to them and tell them your views. Most of them don't even know what they're doing," Adams said. Other tips to parents: Monitor the books and zines young people read and listen to their music to determine if they are coming into contact with satanic messages. Groups such as Metallica, Ratt, Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden include satanic messages in their songs, he said. Avoid day-care centers that don't allow parents to monitor nap times or go on field trips.

Be concerned if youths become obsessed with games such as Dungeons and Dragons or the Ouija board. Drug use often is an integral part of devil worship. "It plays a big, big part in converting young people," Adams said. Most young people become involved with Satanism through friends or new acquaintances, so know who your children are with, he said. If youths involved with satanic symbols don't respond to parental discussions, seek professional counseling, Adams said.

"The best way to keep them out of something bad is to get them into something good," Adams said. "I think any child that has a secure relationship with their parents and stays away from temptation will be all right." Caddo and Bossier law enforcement officials say there is no sign that satanism is a widespread problem, but apparent satanic worship symbols and markings have been found on overpasses and in an abandoned building. Authorities question whether a Springhill woman who is charged with aggravated arson for setting fire to a house early this month was inspired by the occult. The woman allegedly encircled the house with red and black paint and she pos- mmmmwi-m ws: jM I Opal Jewell Edwards Barnard HATTIESBURG, MS. Services for Mrs.
