Chicago at Vancouver, (n) years since Central won it all with a masterful postseason script, the endless comparisons to that unbelievable season have grown tiresome to the point of burdensome for Wahlgren and the Mustangs.

Finally, the comparisons have begun to subside. But if the 1985-86 edition of the Mustangs proves to be as good as Wahlgren suspects, the media will have another field day. The Mustangs return a handful of players who contributed heavily last season. And second semester, they'll welcome with open arms the return of 6-5 senior forward Tom Jett, the most promising Mustang to come along in several years before a knee injury wiped out his junior season. The knee injury and troubles in the classroom have tarnished what was expected to be a brilliant career for Jett, who is ineligible this semester because of poor grades.

But "he's still going to be a good player when he returns," Wahlgren said. "He's just going to have a tough time dealing with all the negative factors he's had to deal with. "At this point, he's obviously not going to attain what he could have attained, due to those unfortunate circumstances. That's a fact he's going to have to deal with. Hopefully, he'll be able to excell and perhaps play in college and reach some of those abilities." The Mustangs hope Jett returns with the brilliant form he displayed as a sophomore, when he averaged 9 points and 7 rebounds.

But their hopes are not pinned on his shirt tail alone. Also returning for the 'Stangs are 6-5 senior Mike Armster, who averaged 8 points per game while shooting 50.4 percent from the field last season; 6-3 senior Tim Deines, a prolific scorer when he had the hot hand; 64 senior Bill Grammer; and 5-11 junior guards David Brummett and James Veal. Veal, upon earning a starting spot in midseason, quickly asserted a breath-taking style in averaging 6.2 points and 3 assists per game. "Wait 'til you see him this year," Wahlgren said, his voice emphatic with excitement. "I think he'll come of age this year.

I don't feel like I'm going out on a limb when I say James Veal is going to be one of the best guards in the area, whether you're talking seniors or juniors or whatever. "We played some younger players Scott Williams Junior guard James Veal will be the catalyst in Salina Central's running game. exciting team to watch. The fans will enjoy watching us this year," Wahlgren said. "I think this will be one of the best running teams we've had in some time.

If we don't get too wild, I feel we're going to do a good job getting up and down the court and running the fast-break. "We're approaching the year with the feeling we can be an aggressive- type team that can do a lot of pressing. Of course, we don't want to press all the time, but I feel we can apply a lot of defensive pressure. "We should be a much improved ball club over what we've been the last two or three years because we're more well-rounded. We have a little bit of size, we have some depth, and we've got some good experience returning.

"We don't really have that outstanding inside threat that probably any coach would love to have, but I feel like we've got some very good kids who are going to be able to do a very adequate job inside. "We still have a lot of question marks. You just don't know how things are going to fall into place. You always have to have a little bit of luck and have a few breaks go your way, no matter what the personnel (is)." Veal personifies the new image Wahlgren sees for this season's Mustangs. In contrast to Wahlgren's highly-structured tactics of recent years, the '85-86 Mustangs will be a team of quickness, speed and excitement. By STEPHEN WHITE Sports Writer Sheila Cherry, Sandy Taggart, Teresa Brichacek, Kelly May and Melanie Harkin all played vital roles last season in Salina Central's first- ever appearance in a girls' basketball state tournament. And all five are back this season. The benefits of that are as obvious as the goals the Mustangs hold for 198586. "This team this year thinks it can win," said Sam Siegrist, who is beginning his fifth season as head coach. "I don't think we're afraid to meet anybody, whereas in the past I think we've walked on the floor against some strong teams and a lot of our players wished they were somewhere else.

I don't see any of that this year. I think they're confident not overconfident. "We haven't really sat down and discussed team goals yet, but I think a realistic goal this year would be a league championship. And without talking to them about, I'm sure the girls feel that way, too. "And I'm sure when the state tournament gets closer, the girls will be looking at that.

They had a great experience at the state tournament last year and I think it'll be a disappointment if we don't make it again." The Mustangs were 13-11 last year, recording the team's most wins in seven years. Central's 7-3 record in the 1-70 League almost doubled the team's previous high of four league wins in one season. Though the Mustangs blew sizeable leads in their last two games and settled for fourth at state, there was no denying that the Mustangs belonged there. Cherry (5-11 pivot) all but single-handedly dismantled opponents with her inside offense and incredible rebounding. Taggart (5-6 forward) shot down top-seeded Buhler with her baseline jumpers.

"One thing I want to emphasize about this team is that it's not Sheila Cherry and the four followers," Siegrist said, as the Mustangs prepared to open the 1985-86 season. "We've got other weapons and one of the biggest differences this year is we've got a bench a bench that not only can come in and not hurt us, but contribute. I've never had that before. "We're not going to just rely on Sheila. There are too many ways to stop just one player and we don't have to rely on just Siegrist said the Mustangs hope to strengthen their arsenal by capitalizing on the quickest team he's had in his five years as coach.

"Our first seven can get up and down the floor. We'll be looking to break a little bit more," he said. "We're going to try to play a little more up-tempo not that we're going to run-and-gun, but we're going to try to get it down the floor quicker. By utilizing their quickness, Siegrist said, the Mustangs hope to eliminate last season's only major flaw an inability to handle opposing presses at state. "I would think with our personnel, we could put a team on the floor that can handle that pressure now," Siegrist said. "We practice with pressure as much as we can. "For the first time since I've been here, we've got a couple of girls who can come off the bench and play. And I believe you need to be able to substitute to run a lot and play the aggressive-type game I hope to play this season." Spartans (Continued from Page 14) high 23 points in the final 20 minutes with a variety of inside moves.

But he didn't get a whole lot of help. Anthony Stephens was the only other Spartan to finish in double figures as the 6-4 senior had 12 points. "Defensively, we did a great job holding a team the caliber of Washburn to 69 points," Pratt said. "But offensively, we didn't execute consistently enough to win." Washburn was paced by junior forward Tom Meier, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Marymount, now 4-2, returns to action Friday night when the Spartans entertain Tabor College at Smoot Gymnasium..
