Scott Ave. Scottish and Irish music on fiddle, Irish flute, bouzouki and vocals. No impersonations: Trio puts its spin on pre-Vegas Elvis By Cathalena E. Burch CBURCHAZSTARNET.COM Bluesroots guitarist Mike Eldred likes to remember Elvis Presley in his leather days. That was before the paunch and the Vegas pantsuit era, when Elvis and his band blasted out scorching guitar licks that hinted at the evolution of rock guitar ing.

That's the Elvis that the Mike Eldred Trio focused on on their just -released album "Elvis Unleaded," 20 songs many of them arguably given short shrift in today's plethora of Elvis impersonation and tribute shows. Eldred, one of roots mu sic's most celebrated guitarists, does not imitate Elvis. He and his band mates John Bazz and Jerry Angel put their own spin on standards such as "Burning Love" and "Love Me," and add renewed energy to songs like "Rip It Up" and "Bossa Nova Baby" that have gotten lost in the Elvis impersonation shuffle The album follows the band's critically acclaimed 2010 CD "61 49," which landed on the Los Angeles Times' 2011 Top 10 album list. The Mike Eldred Trio is roots music's super group. Eldred, who lives in Phoenix, played with former Stray Cat Lee Rocker while Bazz and Angel were members of the pioneering psychobilly band The Blasters.

The trio brings its Elvis cache and host of blues and rockabilly to the Boondocks Lounge for a show Saturday. Tucson's own Tony The Torpedoes opens at 7 p.m. and The Mike Eldred Trio is expectedto go on at 9, according to promoters. Admission is $7 at the door, 3306 N. First Ave.

This is the band's first Tucson show since it played Club Crawl in October 2010. Earlier that year, the band opened for fellow roots rocker Dave Gonzalez's then new band Stone River Boys..
