B5 Star Friday, July 18, 2008 ARIZONA DAILY STAR B5 FUNERAL NOTICES 1 Body found; cops deem it a homicide By Alexis Huicochea ARIZONA DAILY STAR Tucson police are investigating the death of a 57-y ear-old woman as a homicide, an official said Thursday. The woman's body was found Wednesday around 10:45 p.m. by two children looking for a place to skateboard, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a police spokesman. They went into a culvert under South Alvernon Way between East Golf Links Road and East 29th Street when they saw what they believed to be a body, he said.

They did not approach it and contacted police. Officers found that the woman suffered trauma, Robinson said. An autopsy will be conducted. It appears the slaying occurred where her body was found and likely happened shortly before she was discovered, Robinson said. No arrests have been made.

The woman's name has not been released. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or 88-CRUVLE. ft Contact reporter Alexis Huicochea at 629-9412 or ahuicocheaazstarnet.com. Born in Detroit, Ml of Ned and Bernice Slubowski (both deceased), she is survived by her beloved husband, Leon and granddaughter, Kim Sangrey; grandson, Wayne Stevens and great-grandchildren, Madison Sanbrey and Spencer Stevens, all of Lancaster, PA.

While passing through Detroit schools she found the first love of her life -dance, and began studying in her preteens. Between God-given ability and hard work she reached a highpoint by being invited in her mid-teens by the best known figure in American Dance, George Balanchine, to join his junior company. She finally decided that while she loved the art, the prospective lifestyle was not for her. Shortly thereafter she was off to Chicago to further her academic studies at Loyola and theater at Goodman Theater. After completing this stage, it was off to New York where after the usual gestation period she found a successful theatrical career and her husband of nearly fifty years.

As all who knew them will attest they were completely inseparable and indeed became one. Through the ensuing years her personal highlights were many. Lydia was named "the most promising actress of the season" in 1960 by Howard Taubman of The New York Times for her performance in "A Call on Subsequently she starred on a long time afternoon TV favorite "The Doctors" as Dr. Maggie Powers. A great many of her plays surrounded this, many with her beloved husband either acting or directing.

To complete the picture a gourmet cook, and outstanding gardener and an ardent devotee of the international travel that she and her husband loved. It is hard to imagine anyone as blessed as her surviving husband, Leon. Both comforted and agonized by the knowledge that a great mutual love now temporarily suspended I can only use the favored departing words our profession. "And now cracks the noble heart. Good night, sweet Lydia, and flights of angels sing thee to thv rest.
