Dalesio THE ASSOCIATED PRESS RALEIGH, N.C. Franklin McCain, who helped spark a movement of nonviolent sit-in protests across the South by occupying a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter in 1960, has died, his son said Friday. McCain, 73, died of respiratory complications late Thursday, Frank McCain of Greensboro said Friday.

Franklin McCain was one of four freshmen students from North Carolina State University in Greensboro who sat down at the local "whites only" lunch counter on Feb. 1, 1960. "The best feeling of my life," McCain said in a 2010 interview with The Associated Press, was "sitting on that dumb stool." "I felt so at peace and so self-accepted at that very moment," he said. Nothing has ever happened to me since then that topped that good feeling of being clean and fully accepted and feeling proud of me." McCain, Joseph McNeil, David Richmond and Ezell Blair Jr. (now known as Ji-breel Khazan) planned their surprise action carefully.

They bought school supplies and toiletries so their receipts would prove that the lunch counter was the only part of the store where racial segregation still ruled. The young men stayed leather sofas, sectionals, chairs, recliners, ottomans and more only at BRETT'! Hi mates, dared to make a difference by starting the sit-in movement," McCain's family said in a prepared statement. "To us, he was 'Daddy' a man who deeply loved his family and cherished his friends." He graduated in 1964, became a research chemist and sales executive, and moved to Charlotte. His wife of 48 years, Bettye, died a year ago. He served on his alma mater's board of trustees, then spent four years on the board of the University of North Carolina system.

Richmond died in 1990. McNeil is now 71 and Khazan is 72 said Steffany Reeve a spokeswoman for the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, which occupies the former Wool-worth's store. until the store closed, but returned the next day and subsequent days. They were joined by more protesters, whose numbers built to at least 1,000 by the fifth day. Within weeks, sit-ins launched in more than 50 cities in nine states.

The Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro was desegregated within six months. The sit-in led to the formation in Raleigh of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which became the cutting edge of the student direct-action civil rights movement. The protests between 1960 and 1965 helped pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act "To the world, he was a civil rights pioneer who, along with his three class Mi 733-9896 www.brettinteriors.net Reid shifts on changes to jobless-benefit bill Where should you go to buy your used car? A spokesman said Reid is "absolutely willing for the Senate to consider a reasonable number of relevant amendments from Republicans." The spokesman, Adam Jentleson, did not specify a number or describe what he meant by relevant. That left it unclear, for example, whether Reid would allow a vote on a GOP proposal to pay for the bill by delaying a requirement for Americans to purchase coverage under Obamacare. The standoff over amendments has been among the obstacles to passage of the legislation. Six Republicans joined Democrats earlier in the week to advance the measure over an initial hurdle, and several of them said they did so on the expectation that they would be permitted to seek changes.

Without the votes of at least five of the six, Democrats have virtually no prospect of pushing the measure to passage. A spokesman for Kentucky Sen. Mitch McCon-nell, the Republican leader, responded warily to the announcement. Lawmakers in both parties have said they hope to reach a compromise early next week on the measure and send it to the House. Among the issues is a Republican insistence that the price tag be offset to prevent deficits from rising.

Democrats advanced a plan on Thursday to offset the cost, but the savings wouldn't materialize for 11 years. Under Congress' budget practices, legislation is routinely evaluated based on a 10 -year timeline, meaning that official scorekeeping shows the Democratic bill raises deficits by $17.1 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles 2012 Tacoma, Double Cab $23,971 2013 Yaris LE $14,991 TRD Off Road, 4x4, 703058B 5 door, P22200 2012 Tundra Double Cab $24,981 2010 Corolla $1 3,971 1 0k miles, 800042A 28k miles, P22203 2012 FJ Cruiser $27,931 2010 Prius Three $1 7,741 4x4, 1 6k miles, 8001 55A 702873A 2012 Sienna LE $22,431 2011 Prius Three $1 8,491 800352A 703150A 2008 Highlander $22,971 Limited, 4x4, 702461 A Pre -owned Toyotas 2006 Prius Four $1 1,371 2006 Highlander $1 3,961 701 432A V6, 81 Miles, 702794B 2008 Rav4 LE $11,961 2012 Prius Four $19,981 7031 03A 7,700 miles, 700507D 2007 AvalonXL $1 2,431 2012 Tacoma, Double Cab $21,931 701 774A 1 6k Miles, 800233A Ruttirairff RdT lU i I "pibynfa 1 Wetmore Rd.
