Fort Myers News-Press, Thursday April 17, 1975 Fscher, Karpov Meeting Sought By The Assocaited Press A U.S. chess official agreed Wednesday to a proposed meeting between deposed chess king Bobby Fischer and newly crowned champion Anatoly Karpov of Russia, according to Philippine chess officials. Florencio Campomanes, Philippine deputy president of the International Chess Federation FIDE said Ed Edmonson, executive director of the U.S. Chess Federation, called him to express his support for the proposed dialogue between the two players to discuss a possible match. Edmonson, however, told Campomanes he doubted whether the Russian champion will sit down with Fischer to discuss the matter.

"I don't think they (Russians) are serious to have Karpov meet Fischer," Campomanes quoted Edmonson. "I believe it's another of their propaganda efforts." Fischer, who lost the title to his 23-year-old Russian rival by default, broke his silence last Monday, accepting a proposal by Karpov for a meeting to discuss a possible match. Campomanes said he relayed Fischer's statement to Karpov but had received no response yet. Campomanes said Edmonson also indicated that the U.S. Chess Federation would not get involved in the Fischer-Karpov dialogue and added "we hope the Russian side will do the same."
