Fort Myers News-Press, Friday, August 19, 1977 foofba roundup Bucs get Reynolds; Griese a kicker 4C reft (X (f v-i C4VMb All H. son, the Vikings scored a 24-13 victory in 1962. So despite some grim Minnesota statistics, the Vikes appear to have a pretty good shot at beating the Colts in tonight's exhibition in Baltimore. One thing's certain they'll be trying extra hard for that victory. "It's on national television and we don't want to look bad in front of millions of people," said Minnesota quarterback Fran Tarkenton.

"I imagine we'll go with a lot of horses (starters) and I imagine they will, ton BROWNS-CARDINALS Cleveland and St. Louis (along with Houston, Tampa Bay, San Francisco and the Giants) will be trying to put victory No. 1 of the 1977 season on the board. The Browns were nosed out 34-33 by Minnesota last weekend on a final-gun field goal while the Cardinals were stung 15-7 by Denver. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS SAN DIEGO Retired Los Angeles Rams tight end Bob Klein reportedly would play football again for $150,000.

The 6-5, 235-pound veteran of eight NFL seasons said Wednesday he was "totally surprised" when the Chargers gained title to him for a draft choice. If Klein refuses to give up his new job in industrial real estate in Los Angeles, the deal with the Rams would be off. He reportedly made at least $80000 with the Rams. DENVER BRONCOS ATLANTA Craig Penrose, the second-year quarterback from San Diego State, has been given the starting nod for Denver Saturday night when the unbeaten Broncos seek their third straight pre-season victory against the Atlanta Falcons. Denver, which already has defeated playoff contenders Baltimore and St.

Louis, will be favored to dispose of the rebuilding Falcons. Coach Leeman Bennett oTthe Falcons will stick to his plan of giving each of his quarterbacks a start, going this time with Kim McQuilken and following in the second half with his No. 1 quarterback, Steve Bartkowski. Veteran Craig Morton is scheduled to divide playing time with Penrose. GREEN BAY PACKERS TAMPA Willard Harrell will start at halfback and John Brockington will start at fullback against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Saturday night, Green Bay Packers Coach Bart Starr announced.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES CHESTER, Pa. Rookie quarterback Mike Cordova, an llth-round draft pick from Stanford, will see his first action of the 1977 NFL pre-season in Monday night's game against the New England Patriots. TV: Minnesota Vikings vs. Baltimore Colts, Channel 20, 8:30 p.m. From News-Press Wire Services TAMPA The Tampa Bay Buccaneers obtained middle linebacker Jack Reynolds from the Los Angeles Rams for undisclosed future draft choices Thursday to help strenghten a porous Bucs defense.

The Bucs have had their sights set on Reynolds, who was among 17 players involved in a lawsuit in Minnesota. Reynolds, 29, played out his option with the Rams last year. Within the last couple of days he resigned and Los Angeles was free to trade him and receive compensation. "His playing for us is based on several "Contingencies," said John McKay, coach of the 0-14 National Football League Bucs. "It's based on his reporting and his passing our physical.

But as of now he is on our roster." Reynolds is among the oldest players on a squad McKay deliberately has picked for its youth in his build-from-scratch plan. "Even though his age is older he has always stayed in real good shape," said McKay. "We are not getting away from our plan. I figure he can play at least five years." McKay said the addition of Reynolds "should make us stronger inside." The 6-1, 232-pound athlete was the Rams first round draft choice in 1970 after he played college ball at the University of Tennessee. He was All-American and All Southeastern Conference.

MIAMI DOLPHINS MIAMI Quarterback Bob Griese has won the Dolphins' place kicking contest and will boot extra points and short field goals in Dol- game with the Dallas Cowboys in Texas Stadium Saturday. Coach Don Shula also said rookie tackle A.J. Duhe, a No. 1 draft choice, will kick off. Shula indicated that in a long field goal situa-' tion the Dolphins will either punt or go for the yardage, depending on the circumstances.

Griese is being forced into action because of regular kicker Garo Yepremian's pulled hamstring muscle and fifth-round draft choice Mike Michel's pulled calf muscle. VIKINGS-COLTS The Minnesota Vikings haven't had the greatest success against Baltimore but times are changing. Since the Vikings joined the National Football League in 1961, they've managed to win only four of 16 regular-season game against the Colts. Two of those victories, though, came the last two times the teams got together, in 1969 and 1971. The scrambling Theismann, still hopeful he can edge out Bill Kilmer as Washington's No. 1 quarterback, hit Jones with line drives over the middle in a third-quarter march which set up a 42-yarder by Moseley and put the Skins ahead for good. In the last period, Theismann eluded a strong rush while rolling to his right and found Jones open 53 yards away at the Kansas City 8.

Moseley later connected on a 24-yard kick. 9iiMinliq mum tvlling lhl vim us in continue our wnik. rind fkrind it in nvu-. ivlrvrinl uriv-1 ivn. dolldf giw lunik into Irn dulUn uorth of Mrvk-v.

It appears defensive players have finally entered the bargaining arena for real. Somebody must have tipped them there is a shortage of quality down linemen and secondary people. Building a winning team starts with the defensive line. Saturday, the Miami Dolphins put their unbeaten pre-season mark on the line in Dallas. Miami's offense looks impressive.

With Freddie (King) Solomon, Nat Moore and Duriel Harris and second-year running back Gary Davis, Don Shula will have an abundance of outside speed. Bob Griese has been sharp at QB as has his backup Don Strock. Strock will go most of the way against a Cowboy defense which had problems with Seattle's passing game last week.
