14 THE MORNING HERALD, HAGERSTOWN, MD. Tarkenton kayos Jets in battle of New York NEW YORK (AP) "You've got to be champions of your own neighborhood before you try to conquer the world." Wellington Mara, president of the New York Giants, supplied the punch line the past Sunday after his club, inspired by Fran Tarkenton's switch from scram bier to scrapper, flattened New York Jets 22-10 in the first neighborhood brawl between the big city's pro football rivals. Tarkenton came up swinging from a third-quarter pileup-triggering a free-for-all--and then kayoed the Jets with two touchdown passes in a two-minute scoring spree that decided (he teams' first regular meeting. "This will always be an emotion-packed thing the years," said the Giants' quar- terback. "We're both in the same town and all the players on both teams know each other.

It like the Georgia-Georgia Tech games when I was in col lege." An altercation between the former Georgia Dash and Jet linebacker Larry Grantham touched off the fireworks as the the injury-riddled Jets, leading 10-3, blunted a Giant drive inches short of the goal line. Grantham and Tarkenton ex. changed words after Ron Johnson was stopped on a third down plunge from the one yard line. Then, the keyad-up Jet defenders threw back Tucker Frederickson, who lateraled to Tarken- as a referee's whistle blew the play dead. Grantham and another Jet wrestled Tarkenton to the ground.

Seconds later, the fists began to fly. season ton "Somebody (brew me down and somebody else was yelling at me," Tarkenton recalled. "I ust got mad and swung. But I didn't hit anybody. If I'd have anded a punch it wouldn't have mrt anybody anyway.

I can't crush an egg." Tarkenton wound up squaring off against Jet defensive back Sarlie Thomas, a former Golden Gloves light heavyweight, as both benches emptied and several fights broke out. When order was restored, the spilled ex-teammate ihuck Mercein for a safety and Tarkenton took it from there, with the help of an interception by Willie Williams. "Football is an emotional jame," said Giants' defensive back Spider Lockhart. The statewide bag limit of one deer per season remains the same as former years except in Dorchester County, where junter may take two deer per season. Joseph J. Manning, director, said that this special bag limii Dorchester was provided by administration to reduce the deer herd because of crop damage farmers in that county have suffered. Both deer must be taken in Dorchester County and can be during the bow and arrow and regular firearm seasons, Manning emphasized. Antlerless deer ANNAPOLIS (AP)--The Fish and Wildlife Administration has set an antlerless deer season for Dec.

12 in Garrett and Allegany counties. The deer harvest will be controlled by issuing 400 antlerless leer permits in each county, but landowners hunting on their own land will not need a hunting license, a big game stamp or ant- lerless deer permit. Hunters who have not taken a deer during 1970 and who wish to he eligible for the drawing of permits for the 1970 antlerless deer season in Garrett and AHe- gany counties must complete and submit an antlerless application. This application should be sent to the Fish and Wildlife Administration, State Office Annapolis, postmarked not later than midnight, Nov. 20.

Permit drawings will be made at random and those selected will be notified by mail. Frederick strategy session Coach Adam Craven and quarterback Mike Sherman go over some of the strategy the Frederick Cadets will be employing Friday evening when they host the North Hagerstown Hubs in a Tri-State League game. Sherman fired a 12-yard touchdown pass Saturday while engineering a 57-yard march for another score as Frederick defeated Waynesboro, 19-6. Esposito on record pace NEW YORK (AP) Phil Esposito is ahead of his scoring pace and could be on his way to another record season in the National Hockey League. Esposito, Boston's stylish center, leads all NHL scorers with 19 points in nine games, including a league-leading 12 assists.

This is the best start of his career and in 1968-69, when he set the single season record of 126 points, Espo had only eight points--four goals and four assists--in the first nine games. Esposito moved past the 500- point plateau for his career week and also picked up some expected company in the list oi leading scorers when teammate Bobby Orr collected, six points in three games to increase his season's total to 11. That tiec Orr, the defending scoring champ, with five other players for ninth place on the list. Lemm cites health as reason for retiring HOUSTON (AP) Houston Oiler head coach Wally Lemm said Monday "when the game starts eating your guts out, it's iime to quit." Lemm said he had no immediate plans for next year when he will no longer be the head coach. Lemm informed his players Sunday after the Oilers' 44-0 loss lo St.

Louis he was quitting at the'end of this season because of worries about his health. He said the decision was made last fronFofffce' August in a letter to K. S. (Bud) Adams, owner of the team. "The emotion and tension was catching up with me," he told Oiler officials said a new head would be chosen from the hree present assistant coaches, Walt Schlinkman, Fran Polsfoot and F.

A. Dry, at the close of Jie season. Lemm said had recommended one of the assistants but declined to name him. Lemm, 50, who has been coaching football for 27 years, did not rule out the possibility of staying with the Oilers in another capacity, possibly in the last newsmen at the Oilers' weekly luncheon Monday. "My stomach was upset 90 per cent of the time and I had to take pills to sleep.

I found there was not a great deal of enjoyment in coaching. I knew football was not going to change for me. I was going to have to change for football." He also said he would be available for a general manag- "I don't know yet about staying with the Oiler organization," he said. "No offer has been made." He said he wanted to make it clear the loss had nothing tc do with his decision. "I had hoped to keep the an nouncement until the end of the season, but I understood word lad leaked out and 1 wanted the players to hear it from me and lot read about it in the said.

Lemm said he had considered quitting at the end of the 1969 season but decided to stay another year when the Oilers traded for quarterback Charley Johnson. The Oilers, presently 2-4-1 season and tied for second place in the Central Division of the National Football Lsague American Conference, have sufferet a rash of injuries including Johnson, presently out with broken collarbone. Lemm was defensive coach on the first Oiler team in the olc American Football League in 1960. He quit coaching and wen into the sporting goods business in 1961, but came back as heat coach after three games. Th team went unbeaten the remain tier of the season and won th AFL championship.

"We think we know when to 50 to the right, when to, go the left and we found new passages we didn't know about ast year. We hope and pray we can do the race in 24 hours and beat the record of 25:50." That's the mark four four- wheeled cars. Motorcycles, comprising one of the eight divisions in the race, have made trip in 20 hours 38 minutes.

Refinements are made in the racing-type production cars for more speed and safety. For instance, the horsepower in Aman's vehicle has been Erom 75 to 125 horsepower and the springs and shock absorbers are of heavy duty type. Also for protection, there's a long steel plate underneath. "That allows you to slide on a bad surface without damaging the car," he explains. In his explorations, Aman said He found 'landscape changes which must be taken into consideration.

"What was right last year might not be right this year" he added. "We must judge most of the corners for the fastest speeds possible and we've made different variations for the radius of the turns.
