A-10 Town Talk, Alexandria-Pineville, Tuesday, November 20, 1979 No Jazz, But Lots of Razzmatoz it People in Sports it Ruth Laney 7 If' Nolan Ryan The Houston Astros officially announced Monday they had signed hard-throning pitcher Nolan Ryan to a four-year contract for a reported $4 million, making him the highest paid free agent in the history of baseball. (I'M Telcphoto) will represent Louisiana in the Southwest AIAW tournament in March in Weatherford, Okla. If the teams split the series, there will be a one-game playoff at a neutral site, with the possibility of an at-large berth to the tournament. Lady Wildcats coach Frank Schneider, in his first year at the helm following last year's 20-11 season under Carolyn Spears, admitted the Kittens' schedule Is travel-heavy until the first of the year. "Isn't that schedule a mess?" lamented Schneider, referring to a timetable which keeps the Kittens on the road until their first home stand on Dec.

8. and then sends them traveling again until Jan. S. "If we can just last until the first of the year, we'll be okay." Among the tougher tests facing LC aside from jet lag will be a home game against Louisiana Tech on Jan. 10 and another home date against LSU on Jan.

24. Southeastern and Tougaloo should also be challenging. The Kittens should be steadied by the return of. All-America forward Sheila Thompson, the second highest scorer in the state last year, and forward Angela Self, Louisiana's No. 1 reboun-der last year.

Despite being considered "doubtful" this week due to a pulled thigh muscle, Thompson went out and garnered 21) points and 11 rebounds in Monday night's 7H-77 win over Xavier of New Orleans. Self added 20 points and 10 rebounds. Hot hands, funky moves and keen Instincts. Slick jump shots and double-pump layups. Travel to exotic places and wild games under the hot lights of the Superdome.

It looks like another exciting season of Louisiana basketball. But the Jazz have gone, you say? We're talking about women's basketball, folks. The newly enfranchised New Orleans Pride, a women's professional team, is starting out with high hopes and a full schedule in the Super-dome under coach Butch van Breda Kolff. The Pride is one of six expansion teams In the 14-team Women's Professional Basketball League, which is catching on in such cities as New York, Dallas, St. Louis and New Jersey.

Among the women playing for the Pride are 6-3 Queen Brumfield of Kentwood, who was a collegiate standout for Southeastern, and Karen Logan of Santa Ana, a veteran of several Superstars competitions and a longtime traveler on the professional exhibition circuit. Joining the team later in the year, according to a Pride spokeswoman, will be two-time All-America forward Cindy Brogdon, who played for the University of Tennessee. Brodgon is currently completing her. studies and will join the Pride in December. On the college scene, Louisiana Tech's nationally ranked Lady Techsters will be battling to keep Ruston on the AIAW map (that's the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women).

Tech is returning with some new, young players after last year's 34-4 season in which they were state, Region 4, Central and Sectional champions and national runner-up to Old Dominion University in a nationally televised game. And right here at Louisiana College, the Lady Wildcats are already looking at the possiblity of past-season tournament play. It seems that LC and the University of New Orleans are the only two Division II teams in the state. (LC dropped a notch from last year's Division I ranking because they have only six players on scholarship.) The Kittens will meet UNO twice during the season, in New Orleans this Friday night and in the final regular-season game on Feb. 18 at H.O.

In overtime, according to Schneider, "we simply outscored them." Schneider described the game as "close throughout. During the second half, we at one point got an eight or nine point lead, then they (Xavier) reeled off 12 straight unanswered points." All in all, the Lady Wildcats shot 57 percent from the field and 76.6 percent from the free-throw line. Also scoring in double digits for the Kittens were Cain and Martha Warwick, each with 12, and Beth Poole with 10. Besides Williams, Gwendolyn Brule was the only other scorer in double figures for Xavier, with 18. Game high scorer was Xavier's Kay Williams with 21 points.

With 6 seconds remaining in regulation, Xavier was ahead 68-66 when Leslie Douglas, whom Schneider described as "one of Xavier's better free throw shooters," was fouled. "We sent (guard) Dena Cain downcourt for the long ball, because we figured the only chance we had was to try to hit her with a long pass and hope she'd make the bucket," Schneider said. Xavier's Douglas, amazingly, missed her free throw shots. Self rebounded the ball, threw it to Thompson, and Thompson made the long pass downcourt to Cain. Cain was fouled with one second left, her team down 68-66.

NEW ORLEANS Star forwards Sheila Thompson and Angela Self poured in the points, and guard Dena Cain exhibited a steady hand at the free-throw line to lead the Louisian College Lady Wildcats to an exciting 79-77 overtime victory over Xavier University in the Kitten's opening game here Monday night. The win marked the debut of new women's basketball coach F'rank Schneider, who described it as "a really close game." Thompson scored 20 points, had 11 rebounds and made an instrumental pass which led to LC's tying up the game with six seconds remaining in regulation time. Self added another 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sugar Thomas Henderson Hinges on Non-SEC Tilt, Probation Team Thomas 'Hollywood' Henderson, the controversial Dallas Cowboys linebacker, decided to retire Monday when Coach Tom Landry told him he was going to be put on waivers. He had a poor game Sunday, and hurling him even more was the fact that he mugged for the TV cameras while on (he sidelines.

Boyd McWhorter, commissioner of the SEC, Sunday night and he submitted it to the SEC Executive Committee, which voted unanimously to authorize McWhorter to make the request of the Sugar Bowl Association. The Association agreed to the request and would have the right to select the team of its choice under those conditions. There is no doubt that Alabama, would be the bowl's choice. Paul "Bear" Bryant of Alabama was not immediately available for comment on the Georgia move, but the veteran coach had said Saturday that if Alabama didn't beat Auburn he would just as soon "stay home and plow." (AP) A non-conference game and a team that is on NCAA probation will decide who will host the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. Until Monday, the bowl faced the possibility of being forced to invite a losing team to host the college football classic. Under terms of the Sugar Bowl's contract with the Southeastern Conference, Georgia would be the league's representative in New Orleans if No. 15 Auburn, which is on probation because of recruiting violations, upsets top-ranked Alabama on Dec. 1.

If that happens, Alabama and Georgia would be tied for the SEC title, each with one conference loss. Georgia, which is 5-5 overall and 5-1 in the SEC, could be in the bowl with a 5-6 record if the Bulldogs lose to Georgia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference Saturday. The contract specifies that if there is a tie for the conference title, the team with the most recent appearance stays home. But on Monday, the SEC accepted a proposal by Georgia that it could forget the "most recent appearance" clause in the Sugar Bowl contract if the Bulldogs lost to Tech. A Georgia victory or tie would force Alabama into a must-win situation in order for the Crimson Tide to make its third straight trip to the Sugar Bowl.
