In the Ward 1 police jury race, eight candidates will meet in the Dec, 8 runoff for four seats. Defeated Saturday was Vernon Parish Police Jury President William Charles Hilton. Those involved In the Ward 1 police jury runoff and their totals are: William "Bill" Beavers, 961; Thomas Henry Ford, Tom Knapp, Raymond Palmer, Ted Paris, John M. Pickett, 877; John R. Smith, 1,112 and J.J.

Stephens, 788. Those candidates not making the Ward 1 runoff were: Billy E. Burgess, 281; Bill Bums 488; James Robert Carver, 533; James "Bo" Hanna, 465; William Charles Hilton, 684; Anthony Jeane, 710; Flynn Kay, 714; James Sowell, 450; and Thomas Wood, 417. In the Ward 2 police jury race, four persons will be in a runoff for two seats. Involved in the runoff are: Lealon C.

Foster, 664; Wilson R. Morrison, 609; Willie H. Perry, 387; and Dwight "Buddy" Williams, 875. Other candidates in Saturday's primary were Pete Dowden, 339; Fred Ernest Isgitt, 259; Jack Martin, 373; M.O. "Shorty" Poston, 383; and James D.

Wood, 85. Times Natchitoches Bureau LEESVILLE Incumbent Vernon Parish Sheriff Frank A. Howard will be opposed by Oscar Haymon in a Dec. 8 runoff. Howard received 5,523 votes in Saturday's primary to lead a field of seven.

Haymon polled 1,896 votes according to complete but unofficial returns. Here's how the other candidates fared: Malcolm Smart, Jodie Dowden, P.W. Hilton, Allen Dale Turner, 790; and Lewis M. "Mark" Smith, 293. In the tax assessor's race, Eugene W.

Cavanaugh was elected with 6,391 votes. Other candidates were: James E. "Buddy" Williams, W.A. "Bill" Perkins, Brent Thompson, 810 and Carroll D. Gibson, 672.

Four persons will be Involved in a runoff for two seats on the Vernon Parish School Board to fill vacancies created when Ward 1 board members Robert Pynes and Gene Koury resigned after pleading guilty to vote buying during last fall's 4th Congressional District elections. Involved in the runoff and their totals are: Gerald Burns, Max Otto Luttegharn, E.A. Hoff-pauir 926 and Philip Gunn, 851. Other candidates in the Ward 1 school board election were: William N. Baggett, 693; L.W.

Bynog, 551; L.M. Jeane and Jerald W. Jeane will meet in a runoff for the Ward 3 police jury post. Returns show: L.M. Jeane, 458; Jerald W.

Jeane, 262; Maxie Jeane, 171; and Herbert Langton, 114. In the Ward 4 police jury race, Franklin D. Burns will apparently face H.A. Wilson in a runoff. Figures from Saturday's election showed Burns with 955 votes; Wilson, 798; A.L.

Scott, 333; and Gossett Fon-tenot, 72. Jack Singletary will oppose Olice H. James in a runoff for the Ward 5 police jury post. Returns show: Singletary, 912; James, 429; Maurice Bowling, 319; Lester Droddy, 416; Norbert Nolen, 217; and Dudley Sweat, 245. In the Ward 6 police jury race, J.R.

"Butch" Smith will face Rubert C. Gordy in the Dec. 8 runoff. Smith led with 1,015 votes with 728 cast for Gordy. R.D.

Lewis received 651 votes in the Ward 6 election. A runoff in Ward 7 will place Earl W. "Pete" James against Garsie James for the police jury post. Unofficial figures show: Earl James, 895; Garsie James, 611; Lynden "Lynn" Thompson, 605; and B.D. Keel, 152.

Ruston Attorney Joe Bleich defeated two opponents in the District 12 race to choose a successor to veteran legislator George Holstead, who is retiring after serving 16 years. In complete but unofficial balloting, Bleich captured almost 65 percent of the votes cast with 7,273. Joe Hinton followed with 2,376 and Billy Walker received 1,571 tallies.

In the tax assessor's race, incumbent Jewette Farley was the apparent easy winner over Charles "Bud" Hightower, who held the position for 28 years before being defeated by Farley four years ago. Farley finished with 8,083 and Hightower received 2,747. Incumbent Coroner Dr.

M. Temple Douglas of Ruston apparently defeated challenger Jake Spears by a scant 105 votes, finishing with 5,271 votes to 5,66 for Spears. In police jury races, seven of 12 seats will be decided in the Dec. 8 runoff. In Ward 1-A R.D.

"Mickey" Mays, who received 252 votes, will meet Billy J. Price, who garnered 174 votes. Others receiving votes were Fred D. Pee, 169; Roy D. Glover, 163; Preston Telford, 104; J.

Robert Sumlin, 83; and Jerry L. Singleton, 25 votes. In Ward 1-B, incumbent Dr. Rel Gray was the runaway winner with by Sterling V. Harrell with 153.

C.W. Colvin, who received 276 votes, will meet Jake Martin in a runoff to decide who will occupy the Ward 1-D seat. Martin received 191 votes. Dick H. Blackstock finished in third with 94 votes.

Barbara "Kitty" Garner defeated incumbent Ward 1-E Juror Frederick M. Wilson by tallying 488 votes to Wilson's 317. Ward 1-F incumbent John A. Mitchell was re-elected after receiving 485 votes to 247 for Henry Allen Garner. Brown, Huckaby will meet in Red River sheriff runoff Fletcher wins race Times Natchitoches Bureau NATCHITOCHES Norm jury seat.

The sheriff's race and police jury elections are complete but unofficial. Personnel of the clerk of court's office were working Sunday to determine the vote on a one-cent par-ishwide sales tax following problems at one precinct. With 19 of 20 precints reporting, the sales tax appeared to be passing with a vote of 1,506 for and 1,423 against. The tax proposal was called to provide improvements to the parish garbage disposal system and upgrade the jail. Whitehurst Jr.

in a runoff. Dill received 169 votes to 112 for Whitehurst; Scotty Hill with 110 and 45 for Stephen J. Posey. In the Ward 5 police jury race, J.T. Bierden Jr.

will meet Woster Anderson in the runoff. Bierden led with 168 votes to 91 for Anderson. Other candidates in Saturday's primary were Tonie L. Cox, 58; Shirley Driever, 20; and Joshua Williams, 20. Glen Jones defeated Joe Basil Brown 401 to 91 for the Ward 8 police police juror.

Returns show: Roque, 395; Wade, 251; Don Rachal, 226; and J.C. LaCaze, 210. Voters in Sewer District 1 passed two proposals which will allow $961,000 in bonds to be issued for construction of a sewer system and disposal works near Sibley Lake. In District 10 incumbent One Bill Wester will face Charlie E. Longino in the Dec.

8 runoff. Returns show: Wester, 479; Longino, 382; Oren Boswell, 103; Melvin Nichols, 192; and James Taylor, 79. Incumbent Earl A. Roque faces Alfra Wade in a runoff for District 11 Fletcher, local Civil Defense director, was elected Natchitoches Parish sheriff during Saturday's, primary election, according to complete but unofficial returns. jfhe former radio announcer de- Ramsey, Lambert DeSoto runoff set to; 6,181 for the office which will be vacated by the retirement of Sheriff Sam James.

Times Natchitoches Bureau COUSHATTA Incumbent Kirwen Brown will face retired State Trooper L.S. "Buddy" Huckabay in the Dec. 8 runoff for Red River Parish Sheriff.

According to complete but unofficial returns, Brown led a field of five with 2,246 votes followed by Huckabay with 2,070. Other sheriff's candidates and their vote totals in Saturday's primary were James Elzie Bamburg, 277; Charles E. Hicks, 215; and John A. Patrick, 170. Incumbent Clerk of Court Emmett V.

Wommack easily won re-election with 3,295 votes. Challenger Mike Cox received 767 votes and Gary Beard 593. Tax Assessor Lamar Hogsett, another incumbent, was re-elected over Philip Kellogg by a margin of 3,757 to 606. Six police jury races were on Saturday's ballot with runoffs scheduled in four wards. In Ward 1, incumbent police juror Claude Veatch defeated four opponents to win re-election.

Unofficial results showed Veatch with 424 votes; U.S. "Bill" Bade, 47; Willis E. Cox 141; Leonard Guin 42; and Herman Keith, 156. Melvin Dupree and Sam Ross will meet in a runoff for Ward 2 police juror. Returns showed Dupree with 347 votes; Ross, 324; and Elton Smith, 92.

In Ward 3, incumbent police juror Herman F. Gay will be opposed by Elton Wommack in the December general election. Returns from Ward 3 show Wommack received 209 votes; Gay, 206; David Fultz, 40; Jerry Guin, 11; Joyce M. Huckabay, 34; Leon Kethley, 31; Chris Moore, 174; and W.B. "Bill" Woods.

Incumbent Ward 4 Police Juror A. P. Dill will face Leonard 8 In five other districts. District 1 incumbent juror Rufus L. Morgan will face Martha Foshee in a runoff.

Morgan led with 672 "votes to 607 for Ms. Foshee. Bobby L. McElwee received 568 votes. Incumbent Lemias Paige was reelected to the District 2 police jury seat with 441 votes.

Frankie Ray Jackson Jr. received 115 votes with In District 2, J.D. Pennywell Jr. will oppose Harold H. Bryant in a runoff.

Unofficial figures are: Pennywell, 360; Bryant, 352; Edgar Lacobee and Joseph M. Smoak, 132. Tommie Lee Fuller won re-election as police juror for District 3. He received 461 votes as compared to 206 for Preston Moham and 105 for Walter F. Cobbs.

R.U. Johnson defeated three challengers for the District 4-A police jury post. Returns show: Johnson, 352; Jeff Freeman, 200; J. Gregg Blanchard, 94 and Alpha C. McCuller, 41.

In District 4-B, J. Oscar Ricks faces opposition from Robert Lee Clark in the December general election. Unofficial figures reveal: Ricks, 258; Clark, 104; M.L. Caston, 101; J.V. Ebarb, 92; W.M.

Redfern, 95 and Milton A. Ryan, 27. Persley White Jr. defeated A.L. Carter for the District 4-C police jury seatby by a margin of 362 to 178.

Donald R. Sneed defeated Don Chamberlin 705 to 511 to represent District 5. Robert Henry defeated Frank G. Prudhomme 401 to 201 for the District 6 police jury seat. Times Natchitoches Bureau MANSFIELD-Former Chief Deputy Ray Ramsey will be opposed by retired State Trooper Floyd "Frenchie" Lambert in the Dec.

8 runoff for DeSoto Parish sheriff. According to complete but unofficial returns, Ramsey received 3,889 votes to 3,839 for Lambert. Mansfield City Police Chief Lawrence Caston Jr. received 866 votes. The runoff will name a lawman to succeed retiring Sheriff Roy Webb.

In addition to the sheriffs race, four police jury posts were decided in DeSoto Parish Saturday. In District 1-A, W.C. Speights faces opposition from Leslie B. Bagley in a runoff. Unofficial returns show: Speights, 201; Bagley, 195; Wayne Borne, 150; H.L.

Dickerson, 121 and Jerry L. Holmes, 173. Harold F. Cogswell will be opposed by John Gannon in a runoff for police juror in District 1-B. Returns show: Cogswell, 439; Gannon, 170; Jack C.

Averett, 131; Marjorie C. McKinney, 59 and L.J. Whitten, 155. Jarrell O. Burch defeated William H.

"Bill" Adams 477 to 166 for the District 1-C police jury post. im cast lor wuuam nature. Incumbent James W. Scarborough received 466 votes to defeat five challengers for police juror in District 3. The other candidates and their totals were: Leo Antee, 76; Ezekiel J.

Robert Lucky, another incumbent, narrowly defeated Griffin Taylor 997 to 957 for the1 District 6 seat on the police jury. In' District 7 incumbent Charles Weaver received 492 votes to defeat two challengers. Loyd "Pete" Stewart received 403 votes with 47 cast for Morris new Leesville mayor Terry wagoner. District 8 Police Juror Carroll Williamson was defeated in his bid for re-election but a runoff will be held between James Edward McCrory and Deloyce Blewer for the post. The returns show: McCrory, 324; Blewer, Willi one.

Times Natchitoches Bureau LEESVILLE Roger Morris was elected Saturday to replace Ralph McRae Jr. as Leesville mayor, according to complete but unofficial returns. Returns from the Vernon Parish clerk of court's office indicate that Morris defeated Elvin Fontenot 1,635 to 1,037 for the post vacated by McRae when he resigned after pleading guilty to vote buying during test fall's congressional elections. A runoff will be held Dec. 8 between Amos Charles Toney and Luis A.

Casarez for Leesville city marshal. The city marshal's office has been vacant since Hubert Monk resigned after his guilty plea to charges growing out of the 4th Congressional District vote buying scandal. In the marshal's race, Toney led with 1,851 votes, followed by 1,349 for Casarez. Earl L. Stevens received 477 votes and Harold Canady 461 during Saturday's primary.

Mori's, the new mayor, resigned his at-large post on the Leesville City Council to run for mayor. Saturday's election to replace Morris resulted in a runoff between two candidates for the at-large seat. James Garner, who received 1,091 votes, and Richard Berry, who followed with 894 votes, will meet in the December general election. Another candidate in Saturday's race, Henry E. Henson, received 508 votes.

Adams, 48. Incumbent N. Younger Stewart will4 be in a runoff with Warren Woodel for the District 9 police jury position. Complete returns show: Stewart, 647; Woodel, 516; Stanley Broadway, 96; and Archie Do re, 87.
