The bright white-and-red lights on tire gantry towers blink out and the gaunt structures are barely visible in the semi-darkness. One tall red tower remains balh- ed in hot spotlights. A big white van with the letters on its side pulls up by the gantry tower.

A weird-looking figure in a helmet and space suit takes an elevator 60 feet up the structure and gingerly steps into a one- ton capsule. After what seems like an interminable delay, the lid atop 'the capsule closes. By this lime, the sun has appeared over Ihe Atlantic Ocean. The voice on the squawk-box in buildings al! over the Cape rasps minus 60 minutes and count' ing." Slowly, the big red gantry tower moves down railroad tracks, and a sleek white missile, with S. Army" printed On its side and a capsule escape system on lop, is exposed, naked in Ihe warm sun.

The minutes pass slowly. At ten- minute intervals the squawk-box licks off the count: minus 40 minutes and counting minus 30 minutes and counting minus 20 minutes and There's a slight "hold" while down-range stations are checked for the last time. No shipping in the impact area, the recovery ships and their helicopters are at their appointed areas, poised for action. At minus 15 minutes" Ihe impersonal voice on the squawk- box licks off each minute. With one minute to go, it's every five seconds.

With ten seconds to go, il's every second. three two MARK!" For the longest second in the world, nothing happens. Then a huge burst of orange flame spews in all directions at the base of the Redstone; the rocket slowly lifts up through the mushroom cloud, gradually accelerating, faster, faster, faster. A sound wave roars across the Cape. The squawk-box continues its monotone: plus 30 seconds plus 40 seconds." Now the Redstone is high in the sky, only its fiery engine visible.

Slowly it arcs out over the Atlantic on its predetermined flight program; long white control streamers chart ils progress in the cold air of the upper atmosphere. Shortly after the voice intones plus 120 seconds," there's a faint puff of smoke--first stage burnout--and now the blue skies appear empty. The capsule is flying free, out of sight. Another Redstone launch at the Cape is history. Only this time there's a man in the capsule.

This is a day to remember. That's the way everyone hopes it will go some day soon. With the hope there is tension, tension that's already growing at NASA nerve-centers here in Wash- tonton, at the Langley Research- Cenler, Virginia, at Johnsvllle, Pennsylvania, al Huntsville, the Cape. There is certainly tension in this correspondent, who has watched dozens of rocket launches at the Cape. Many of them were bigger and more speclacular rockets, but none will match the upcoming Redstone launch in sheer drama.

You always remember the first rocket you saw fly. Mine was a Navaho, almost four years ago, a rocket system lhat never panned out and was "scrubbed" (that's rnissilesc for long ago. But mine was a thing of beauly, and I've been hooked by rocketry ever since. The "birds" (missiles) take on a personality after a few weeks al the Cape. Who can forget the "Vanguard," that naughty cut-up that consisted of 72 feet of "minor technical difficulties?" I cursed it daily from a sandy slrip of beach four miles from Ihe Cape, back in the days when the lest center was forbidden territory for reporters, but I cried on Dec.

6, 1957, when the first Vanguard went up in a puff of smoke just four feet pad. Then there's Ihe "Atlas," the biggest rocket we have. It will carry the first V. S. astronaut lo attempt an orbital flight, probably within the next twelve months.

The "Big Annie" is mighty reliable now, but three years ago it was exploding regularly in the skies over the Cape, putting on awesome displays for the amateur "bird-watchers" but breaking the hearts of its dedicated launching crews. But until the MR-3 number manned attempt comes along shortly, the biggest memory for this reporter has to be the chilly evening of Jan. 31, 1958, when Dr. Wernhcr von Braun his Huntsville team confidently hurled a "Jupiler into space. His confidence -was justified when Iwo hours later tracking stations confirmed the first American satellite was in orbit? 1 still treasure a recording of my "call" of that launch.

Describing a launch is like describing a Mickey Manlle homer; Ihe excitement is contagious. Combine that excitement with the knowledge that the next lime there will be a man in Ihe capsule, and il's obvious why Ihe tension is already setting in. When that day comes soon, I'll be part of a team of "pool" network reporters, who'll describe the event live on radio and television. In my case, I'll be right at my old familiar stand--atop the press site, some 6,500 yards from the Redstone. The knot in my stomach will gradually move up lo my throal as the count moves down to the magic "MARK!" Then the reporters al the press site, the scientists and engineers in the blockhouse, the bird-watchers along the beaches north and south of the Cape will be screaming "Go! Go! Go!" just as they always do.

Ane one of three men I've come lo know, like and respect Hie chosen astronaut will begin his rendezvous with destiny.
