Parish school teachers and bus drivers who have served three years with the board are automatically reemployed from term to term, H.

M. Wells, superintendent of public schools, explained. After the probation period a teacher or transfer driver must be released by action of the board, "fif tho ass whito teachers, only 40 of them were persons who had nnt served their nrobation period, he said. All of these were reemployed with the exception of three 'who were releasd. Of the 114 negroe teachers employed by the board, a small percentage were rehired who had not served the proDation time.

Three of these were outright released by the board, Mr. Wells said. All 71 of the transfer drivers were reemployed for the 1943-44 term, at the special session. Friday will be the last payday for the 336 white and 45 negro teachers and 71 bus drivers who will draw paychecks in the amount of approximately $65,000, Mr.

Wells said. This will be the final payday of the current term. Superintendent Comments Commenting on the year's term about to close, Mr. Wells said to- day, "We have experienced a broken term, with a lot of inter-i terences from various reasons, but on the whole the term has been successful. "The schools have accomplish-" ed a lot more than had been an-, ticipated at the outset of the Mr.

Wells declared, "yet we've been able to carry on bet- ter than any of us expected." With one of the biggest at-, tendances of the local system's history, about 14,000 white and negro students attended the high and grammar schools in Rapides parish. Many of the students were of army families and civilian defense workers who have sent the population to a skyrocketing prewar high figure of more than 150,000 inhabitants with about 80,000 of these persons living in the immediate Alexandria area alone. May 25, and proceeded to the St, Francis Xavier Cathedral, where service? were conducted by Rev. Father Louis P. Senesac, and thence tc Greenwood cemetery, where servces were held by Rev. Father F. J.

Plulz. The funeral was under the direction of Kramer's. Pallbearers were Frank and Tony Shelfo, Joseph Augichiorlo, J. S. George.
