Sunday, May 13. 1963 THE NEW MEXICAN II Design It- Western Homes Can Build It NORTHERN NIW MIXICO BUSINESS and FINANCE of the city. HI wife agreed, and in 1956, Tucker Homes moved into Clovis. Since that time, the firm has constructed over 000 homes in Clovis alone. Eager to expand.

Tucker began casting around early in INI for a potential site for setting up another plant. After discussing the Las Vegas area with the Chamber of Commerce and the Las Vegas contractors and real estate men, Tucker moved the bulk of his organization into four brick buildings that wert formerly used by the Las Vegas division of the Clayton Pallet Company. Tucker said about the move, "I feel that Western Homes, our new Las Vegas plant, can do a lot, not only for the local residents but for the surrounding area. After all, we plan to employ about 56 people once we get roll. Too, were in a potentially boom area, roll.

Too, were in a potentially boom' area. I cant see why other industries havent picked Las Vegas for their operations. Theres a good labor market, were close to Santa Fe and Albuquerque, two major suppliers, and, Tucker smiled, the climate is just great. J. B.

Clark, the business manager for Tucker in Las Vegas, in talking about the method of construction used by Western Homes, stressed that the company could build practically any type building a person wanted. One mistake people make when they consider our operation is thinking that we are a pre-fab outfit, Clark said. "However, were not. We build component parts: rafters, wall panels, door frames, doors, and cabinets. Since we vary the sizes of the rafters or wall sections or other items we build, a person can determine his own dimensions for a 'house or cabin, and well simply supply the parts that he needs.

Insofar as floor plans or designs are concerned, we really dont care what a customer wants. Well just supply him with the materials he needs. Clark pointed out that Western Homes can furnish materials for practically any kind of building. Of course, he added, one of our hottest sellers right now is the vacation cabin. For example, we can sell someone an A-Frame in a package; that is, the buyer can put it up himself; or we can sell it as a finished unit: well send our boys out to erect it.

In addition to building component parts for buildings, Western Homes manufactures other wood by-products. Much of the scrap wood left from rafters or wall panels is utilized in the making of pallets, the racks on which produce is transported from the field to the warehouse or the market. Smaller pieces of scrap By RAY NEWTON Of Our Las Vegas Bureau If you can design it, we can build it. Herb Tucker, president of Western Homes, Las Vegas, grinned at a vacation cabin his firm had recently constructed at the corner of 4th St. and Mills Ave.

in Las Vegas. Tucker pointed at the redwood-stained front paneling of the structure. We expect to sell a lot of these units to people in the area. Why, just yesterday, my main salesman, Joe Decker, had 13 calls about the A-Frame. The A-Frame Tucker mentioned was built in the shape of an overgrown capital A.

The structure, 16 wide 24 long 18 high, was built of rough finished lumber, covered on the exterior by roll roofing, while the interior walls were varnished, giving the cabin a rustic appearance. Well use this one as our office and demonstration unit, Tucker said. Weve incorporated into It many of the features which are available in units of this type. Its got a bathroom, complete with shower, sink, stool. The kitchen, Tucker waved at it with his hands, is compact, but it has plenty of room for a small stove and half size refrigerator, plus base and wall cabinets." Tucker walked into the first floor bedroom.

We designed this one to be large enough for a double bed. And it has a built-in closet and vanity unit. Now the sleeping loft just above this, Tucker pointed upward, is smaller, but you can easily put two or three people up there. Tucker, the stocky, 58-year-old president of Western Homes, beamed over his glasses as he pointed out the features of the A-Frame. No newcomer in the building and construction business, Tucker has been in one phase or another of home building since 1931.

Starting in southwestern Illinois, Tucker worked for a construction company and learned the fundamentals of the business; he then started his own company in Fairfield, 111., in 1937 and built homes in that area for a ten-year period. Realizing that the end of the war would probably mean a larger volume of business, Tucker moved his operation to Poplar Bluff, so he could capitalize on the mass of building taking place in St. Louis. One summer he and his wife, Laura, took a trip and happened to travel through parts of Oklahoma and New Mexico. Herb told his wife as they drove through the eastern part of New Mexico, Lets move out here and get away from the push are ased in the making of the survey and landmark stakes used by highway construction and engineering crews.

Two weeks ago, for example, Western Homes had an order for such stakes which were to be used in marking the right-of-way for a new road project. According to Mike Callon, the plant superintendent, it's not unusual for his crew to cut and bundle a shipment of 541,000 stakes to be sent to Iowa or Illinois. Always looking for new ways to ase the waste products from the lumber the company uses, Herb Tucker intends to buy a hog, a machine which grinds and shreds wood into fine pieces so that they can be put under pressure and compressed into hardboard and fiber-board. Tucker also plans to use the tons of sawdust thrown from the 10 and 20 inch rip and crosscut saws monthly. Tucker explained, There's a machine on the market into which you feed the sawdust.

It packs and squeezes the wood into the shape of a log which can be burned in a fireplace. The advantage is, of course, that such logs are uniform and consistent. He added laugh, ingly, And the husband doesn't have to worry about chopping off his toes cutting firewood. Joe Decker, the chief sales agent of the compeny in the Las Vegas area, commented on the future outlook of the company. Boy, it sure looks good.

If we can sell homes or cabins to all the people who say theyre interested, well be busy for three years. Right now, homes are the big sellers, probably because weve priced them moderately. But weva had a lot of interest in vacation homes too. Weve already placed six cabins in Eagle Nest, and were trying to place demonstration units in some of the larger New Mexico towns. According to Clark and Tucker, the company has completed arrangements with some of the FHA offices to finance homes, either in the semi-complete or finished stage.

Tucker, or Uncle Herb, as the crew at the plant calls him, said, Obviously, the best deal we can make is the semi-complete package. A buyer simply gets the package he wants from us, and then he constructs it himself in his spare time. Thats the advantage of component parts; they're pre-cut so that everything fits. Uncle Herb and the rest of the men at Western Homes alt evidence strong enthusiasm for the future of the company. As Tucker puts it, Weve got a product that everyone at one time or another wants a new home.

By PETE PETERMAN Spring weather came to Santa Fe last month and brought with it an increase in building activity. Building inspector Mel Hagman noted that the increase came in home improvements, new home construction and commercial building. The largest single project reported by the city building inspector was a new motel, a 50-unit model to be built on property acquired from Ray Hamm at 626 Cerrillos Road. The motel has a valuation of $150,000. The following statistics show the number of building permits issued, also the respective valuations.

W. T. Brown, superintendent of Valmora Sanitori-um. In addition to its operation as a working ranch, the site served as a summer home for the Brown family and a place for entertaining numerous friends from the East. Headquarters was, and still is, the large provincial ranch house erected by the original settlers.

Principal features expected to please visitors are the unsurpassed mountain scenery and horseback riding over numerous ilderness trails.

There are modern, though rustic cabins and meals are served at the ranch house, which also serves as a gathering place for guests. The ranch was featured in a recent book, Behind the Mountains by Santa Fe author Oliver La Farge.
