The letter, valuable Lincolniana because of Its autobiocrafical content, is in the hands of Ralph Newman and John Valentine, owners of the Abraham Lincoln, book store, 16 N. Michigan av. It is unusual also because it was kept secret by one family for 8G Sears In respect to Lincoln's modest request that the letter not be made public.

Summary of Campaigns In the famous Presidential campaign of 1860 John Coulter, a farmer near Niles, wrote to Lincoln to settle an argument about Lincoln's political rivalry with Peter Cartwright, the central Illinois preacher and politician. Lincoln answered Mr. Coulter with a two page letter which in effect gives a nummary of Lincoln's office holding career until his election to the Presidency. This is it: Private GRANDMOTHER AND 3 DIE IN CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN Mrs. Fred Rabe, 64, of 513 Raymond Elgin, and three of her grandchildren were killed yesterday when their automobile was struck by an Illinois Central railroad frate train at the Youngsdale rd.

crossing near Elgin in Kane county. The grandchildren were Theodore Stude, 22, his sister, Betty. 21, and his brother, Kenneth, 18, who re 3 SHOOTING RIFLE SEIZED; WOMAN GARDENER HIT Three young men were seized by Detectives Walter J. McCauley and Martin J. Repp while promiscuously shooting a .22 caliber rifle yesterday in a prairie at 77th st.

and St. Louis av. Police said one of their wild shots wounded Mrs. Casimera Ruz-gis, 50, of 7037 S. Artesian av, in the left forearm as she worked in a garden near 73d st.

and Spaulding av. Those held are Pvt. Edward Wall-ner, 21, of 7118 S. Seeley av, and Donald Gaughan, 22, of 7041 S. Winchester av, a sailor, both home on furlough, and Robert Fleischmann, 18, of 7207 S.

Seeley av, owner of the rifle. They were questioned by police and the rifle was examined at the police gun section to determine whether it was the weapon that fatally wounded Nancy Lowrey, 12, of River and Gold rds, Des Plaines, in a forest preserve near her home April 19. A coroner's jury returned a verdict of manslaughter at an inquest into the child's death. Deputy Coroner Edward Edelstein urged parents to stop their children from promis-cous rifle shooting. FAVOR DEFEAT OF 5 CITY BOND ISSUES JUNE' 3 The Civic Federation and Bureau of Public Efficiency yesterday approved the 70 million dollar county bond issue for super-highways but recommended defeat of the five city bond issue proposals totaling 115 million dollars, altho these include 42 millions for the city's share of the same super-highways. All bond issues will be voted upon at the June 3 judicial coalition election.

The 42 million dollar bond issue for the city's share in the state- county-city super-highway program, most of it for the new Douglas airport route, should not have been used as a 'make-weight' for the other city bond proposals at an election when normally few people will vote," the federation announcement declared. In our judgment the super-highway program will not be handicapped if this city tax levy bond issue is defeated now and resubmitted at the Nov. 5 election. To avoid possible confusion of the voters, therefore, we also recommend defeat of this city bond issue." All of the city bond issues would be financed thru the property tax. sided with their parents on a farm near Elgin.

i John Coulter, Esq. Dear Sir: Yours of the 29th is received; and I presume I understand what has prompted you to write it. In 1832. I was first a candidnte for the legislature, with norne ten or a dozen other candidates. Peter Cartwright and three others were elected, of whom I was not one.

In 1831 he, and and several others, again became candidates; he declined before the election, I saw the race thru, end. with three others, was elected. In 1S33 he became a candidate to fill a vacancy in the state senate and his sole competitor. Job Fletcher, beat him by near six hundred majority. In 1836, 1838, and 1840, I was successively elected to the legislature, he not being a candidate at either cf those elections.

I then ceased to be a candidate for anything till 1816, when I ran for congress Mr. Cartwright was my competitor, and I beat him, as I recollect 1.511 majority, being about double the party majority of the district. I was never candidate for con-Kress at any other time, and never had any contest with Mr. Cart-wright other than as I have stated. Please do not make this public.

Yours truly, A. Is Mjunshcfi the impression that Lincoln often was unsuccessful In his quest for public oilice until he gained the Presidency. No Time to Campaign Ills one defeat, when he ran for the Illinois legislature in 1832, occurred shortly after he had returned from the Black Hawk war and had not time to campaign against several candidates. During his lifetime. Coulter kept the letter from the public and on his death in 1904, it passed to his nephew, C.

E. White. In 1935, White gave the letter to his son, Richard and it was only with the realization that time had negated the trust and that history would be served, that the younger White sold the docu- mem io me nooKstore. An unusual feature of the letter Is the original envelope, addressed in Lincoln's hand and bearing the postmark "Springfield, Illinois, Sep. 4, I860." The letter is now on display.

WOMAN OFFERS BONE TO PROVE RIGHT TO RICHES LONDON. May 2 A titled Indian woman, in evidence presented today to the British privy council, the empire's highest court, based her claim to widowhood and an immense fortune on a human bone. She said she carried it from her husband's funeral pyre 37 years ago. The testimony was part of the court record of a 25 year old lawsuit for an Indian, domain as large as England and yielding a return of $400,000 a year. Appealing a decision of the high est Indian court granting the estate to a man who claims to be the Rajah Kumar of Bhowal, the Ranee Bidhabati said she took the bone from the ashes of her husband's body and that it was thrown into the Ganges river by a priest.

Counsel for the ranee said her husband died May 8, 1909, and on the following day was taken in a procession to the Hindu cremation grounds at Darjeeling.
