Pat -t; ration of the altar of the church V.V that the cup pass. And the triumph over all doubts and fears was in that calm achievement through prayer, "Nethertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt." Apart from its place in the whole Gospel story of tragocy, triumph, and good news, the experience in emane is significant for its revelation of the true humanity of the divine Christ. He who was to be the Saviour on the Cross was there a man in agony, praying to see the right way and for the will and strength to follow it. It was the experience that in lesser degree has corns to many men and women in suffering, or faced with some crucial decision or threatening danger. And it is in the very nature of such a crisis of suffering or danger, for the soul to cry out in doubt, and to yearn for some convincing voice of God.

Job's temptation in the acute-ness of his distress was to "curse God and die." In the crisis of Gethsemane it is not all a matter of bearing pain, of enduring suffering. Back of all that, as many who have faced the crisis know, is the question, "Why? Why?" That question is not always answered. God watches over the sparrow's fall but we aio not told why the sparrow falls. But to the waiting, watchful soul, in earnest prayer comes the answer as it came to the Master, the consicousness that God is near, and God is leading. 'Arise let us go hence." Out of Gethsemare came 1 tt tifZJ GETHSEMANE: A SYMBOL SUFFERING Gethsemane is indeed a symbol of suffering.

We speak of those undergoing extreme suffering, and in agony, as "passing through but the Gethsemane, in the garden where Jesus agonized in waiting, watching, and praying, was not symbol. It was a real and terrible jet. It was because of that suffering of "a man acquainted with grief" that Gethsemane has become a symbol of suffering; and the triumph of the Master in that dark hour ought to be a symbol of the way of triumph for others sorely distressed and oppressed. What was the nature of the Master's And how did He triumph? It is clear from the record that His suffering was physical, so acute that He sweat drops of blood, but- this physical suffering was only the outward accompaniment of agony of mind and soul. The Master, who but a few days previously had been hailed as a King in His triumphal entry into Jerusalem was now facing the cross.

That in itself might well have been an agonizing prospect, but we may be sure that it was not any physical fear that perplexed and distressed Him. Deeper than all else was the question regarding His destiny, and the Father's will. Was it the only way? Temptations similar to those that He had met at the beginning of His public ministry must have shaken Him in that hour. It was His doubts, rather than Hi; thst wers ex-pre5ed in that earnest prayer Given in marriage by her uncle, Mr. Joe S.
