Tuesday, June 8, 1999 D-5 The Town Talk, Alexandria-Pineville, La. TV Tonight hi seattle Plenty of quality goes around 25th Seattle International Film Festival I iW.r?,'' By William Arnold Seattle Post-Intelligencer SEATTLE "Run Lola Run," an exhilarating German film about a woman frantically trying to raise money to pay off her boyfriend's debt to gangsters, received the Golden Space Needle award for best picture Sunday in the closing ceremonies of the 25th Seattle International Film Festival. Rupert Everett was voted best actor for his performance in "An Ideal Husband;" Piper Laurie was named best actress for her performance in "The Mao Game;" John Sayles was selected best director for 'Limbo;" and "Buena Vista Social Club" was honored as the best documentary. The two American Independent Awards went to "Dead Dogs" and Laurie (her second prize of the day); and the three awards in the New Director's Showcase competition were divided among Belgium's "Rosie," the Czech Republic's "The Bed" and Norway's "Only Clouds Move the Stars." The awards and the official closing night presentation, "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," capped 25 days of frantic film activity in the city and screenings of some 206 films SIFF's largest lineup ever and, once again, a figure no other American film festival can come close to matching. It was the best-attended festival ever (up 8 percent from last year, with a projected attendance of and, to my mind, the best festival of the '90s in terms of quality.

Festival director Darryl Macdonald said going in that this 25th SIFF would be "something special," and he more than made good on the promise. It was the festival that had something for everyone, and a bit more: five filmmaker tributes, 25 classic revivals, 20 documentaries, appearances by literally hundreds of filmmaker guests climaxing with a spectacular, goosebump-inducing presentation of the 1925 "Battleship Potemkin" (accompanied by the full Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra) that is sure to go down as one of the greatest moments in SIFF history. To be sure, there were the usual flub-ups and no-shows that invariably plague any film festival (the much-advertised, 25th anniversary souvenir booklet, for instance, somehow didn't get printed, and is now scheduled to come out for next year's 26th). I also didn't attend a single event that started on time. But these annoyances were barely Screen Gems best director for the movie at the 25th Annual Seattle International Film Festival.

to shoot a scene was selected as edition and to the fact that the international cinema genuinely seems to be in the first stages on a badly needed creative renaissance. Indeed, this may have been the first SIFF in which I caught at least one memorable film from each of 30 countries, and from every region of the world: such happy surprises as the Czech Republic's "Sekal Must Die," Ireland's "Sweety Barrett," Tunisia's "Bent Familia," Russia's "Day of the Full Moon," Taiwan's "Jam," and Australia's "The Castle." There were almost as many foreign films that, because of the daunting 206-film lineup, I missed, but which generated enthusiastic reviews and audience word-of-mouth, including Yugoslavia's "Black Cat, White Cat," Greece's "Shores of Twilight," France's "Lautrec," and Italy's "Besieged." Here is my list of 10 festival discoveries that are definitely worth catching when (and if) they come back to town for a theatrical run: Earth Incorrectly labeled a Canadian film In the SIFF program, this heartbreaking Indian drama set in Lahore just before and during the partition of India in 1947 is a stunning historic epic, and a profound examination of the 20th century's seminal and still-bloodiest outbreak of communal violence. Opens in September. An Ideal Husband This British comedy is arguably the movies' best adaptation of an Oscar Wilde play: a witty, stylish character piece and delicious slice of late-Victorian London society, with Rupert Everett at his scene-stealing best muttering Wildean epigrams from the corner of his mouth. Opens June 25.

Adrenaline Drive Shinonu Yaguchi demonstrates once again why he is considered Japan's hottest comedy director with this uniquely charming and frequently hilarious farce about a timid rental-car clerk and a meek nurse who fall in love while on the run with a bag of the Yakuza's money. No opening scheduled. Last Night This offbeat Canadian ensemble tragicomedy, directed by and last. It's just that I happen to play the guitar, and people like it, and that's wonderful. It beats washing dishes for a lyving.

So that's what I do, but that's not who I am completely." The Santana lineup of musicians has constantly evolved over the years, and includes such distinguished alumni as keyboardist Gregg Rollie, drummer Michael Shrieve, vocalist Buddy Miles, bassist Alphonso Johnson and guitarist Neal Schon (who will be playing at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., later this month as a member of Journey). The current band features former Tower of Power keyboardist Chester D. Thompson, former Miles Davis "bassist Benny Rietveld, percussion master Karl Perazzo, conga player Raul Rekow, drummer Rodney Holmes and vocalist Tony Lindsay. Return With Honor This absorbing, sobering documentary about the U.S. POWs in Hanoi during the Vietnam War (which incorporates recently released footage from the Vietnamese government) is an epic story of prison survival comparable to such classics in the genre as "Papillon" and "Birdman of Alcatraz." Opens July 16.

Run Lola Run Incorporating animation, rock-video techniques and director Tom Tykwer's unique storytelling style, this German celebration of speed showing three alternate plot-lines as its heroine has 20 minutes to raise 100,000 marks to save her boyfriend's life powers along like a truck on the Autobahn. Opens June 25. The Last Contract It's not quite "The French Connection" or "Day of the Jackal," but this what-if, Swedish nail-biter about a maverick cop who stumbles on the 1986 conspiracy to assassinate Prime Minister Olaf Palme is an irresistible paranoid thriller that proves Hollywood no longer has a monopoly on the genre. No opening date scheduled. Pirates of Silicon Valley This made-for-cable, dual biopic which chronicles the rise of Microsoft's Bill Gates and Apple Computer's Steve Jobs in the '70s and '80s and basically contends the two tycoons stole the ideas that made them so fabulously wealthy is fast, wildly irreverent, outrageous fun.

Airs on TNT, beginning June 20. Jinnah British actor Christoper Lee plays Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the Father of Pakistan, in this absorbing biography that sugarcoats some aspects of his life, but is mostly an eye-filling and fair-minded epic designed to boost Jinnah's legacy as an alternative to the Taliban-like Muslim extremists now trying to take over that country. No opening date scheduled. To Walk With Lions This superb BritishSouth African drama, roughly a sequel to 1966's "Born Free," is a passionate environmental plea, a extraordinary character study (with a towering performance by Richard Harris), and a disturbing, mournful, poignant ode to the passing of the African wilderness in our lifetime. No opening date scheduled.

inventing the fusion of Latin and rock with his early albums "Caravanserai," "Santana III," "Abraxas" and his self-titled '69 debut. He doesn't see it that way. "For me, one of the first people who cracked that door open was Ritchie Valens with 'Donna' and "La Santana says. Despite the recent upsurge in popularity of Ricky Martin and the whole rock en espanol movement, Santana isn't comfortable with the term "Latin music." "This music from "La Bamba' on down is really African music," he declares. "So this whole wave of Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Gloria Estefan is really popularizing African music.

It's not Spanish or Latin. It's really African music, whether it's a bolero, cha-cha, rhum-ba or samba. Whatever you call it, it's still African music, and I always like to clear that thing up." Kincaid Lake OX WKTORY FOfi SH0W1MES Hero of Latin sound prepares to release new album John Sayles (center) prepares for the movie "Limbo." Sayles noticed, the vibes were exceedingly good, and less complaining was heard in the queues than in any festival of recent memory largely, I think, because the films were overwhelmingly good. Out of the 80-plus entries I managed to see, I can count the stinkers on one hand, and thus will have to forgo my usual ritual of revenge: a festival list. The number of low-budget American independent films a figure that has grown astronomically in the '90s was significantly slashed for the 25th, and, clearly, a much tougher selection process was exercised.

Many of the films that made the cut still were forgettable, but most justified their presence in the lineup with a stand-out performance, an intriguing storyline or a flash of embryonic talent somewhere in the credits. Above all, SIFF '99 lived up to the in its initials by delivering its strongest slate of foreign films in many years: a testament both to the programmers' determination to make the 25th festival a landmark There has always been a deeply spiritual side to Santana's instantly recognizable, supremely soulful guitar playing. For all of the ferocious fire and intensity that he pours into his playing, there's an undeniably spiritual center to his music, a kind of calm at the eye of the raging, swirling sound. And is no exception. The ball started rolling back in February, when Santana performed with golden girl Lauryn Hill at the Grammy Awards show.

"Eric Clapton was sitting in the front row that night, and he wanted to know if he could participate in my album," Santana recalls. "He said, "If you can hear me on your album, I'd like to be on it, if there's any room for Santana laughs. my I said. From there, it was like a chain reaction. that, the album was really just a concept, but kind of like the Bible says, 'This begat that, and that begat Santana explains.

"It wasn't intended to be an all-star-studded album, but the songs really dictated different singers and different musicians. Slated for release June 15, the album titled "Supernatural" is Santana's first for Arista Records and reunites him with Arista executive Clive Davis, who signed Santana to his first record deal with Columbia Records more than 30 years ago. "Supernatural" also finds the guitar great collaborating with a top-notch collection of special guests longtime friends and compatriots as well as newcomers who have been influenced by Santana's music over the years including Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Everlast, Rob Thomas (of Matchbox 20), Eagle Eye Cherry and more. Despite the parade of multiplatinum musicians who grace the album, Santana didn't have his eyes on chart-success when he was in the studio.

"This album was conceived directly to touch our children in junior high schools, high schools and universities. With everything that's happening in our schools, all of these shootings, it's important to create something that can bring us all together and not divide us," he said during a recent telephone interview from his New York City hotel room. "This music is not entertainment. This is healing music. "When you look in the dictionary under it says "To be whole and That's how I wanted the music to sound, with that kind of balance." There was no ego-tripping. Nobody had a cow." Most musicians would be touring straight through to the end of the year to support such an impressive new album. Santana takes a more civilized approach to his roadwork. "Since my wife and I had our first child, we decided that it was important to find a balance," Santana says. "'So I go out on the road for three weeks, and then I'm home for three weeks.

I'll go out for.four weeks and stay home for four weeks. Five weeks is the most time that I'm willing to spend out on tour at one time.
