THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Wednesday, January 24, 2001 Obituaries Service for Richard Walton set for June 2 By Herb Drill INQUIRER SUBURBAN STAFF A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. June 2 for Richard M. Walton, 85, a retired professional engineer whose Middletown Township home was of historic significance. He died Jan. 10 at Attleboro Nursing Home in Langhorne, where he had lived for a short time.

The service will be held in the meeting house of George School, Langhorne-Newtown Road (Route 413, south of Route 332), Middletown, Bucks County. Mr. Walton worked for Merck the former Publicker Industries and Gulf Oil Corp. before joining the medical research division of Squibb Corp. in 1963.

At Squibb, he was on the team responsible for development of the veneer coating of tablets, the Sweeta sugar substitute, Sugarcane 99, and several other product lines. He cowrote many articles on pharmaceutical research and design, and held several patents. Mr. Walton, a Quaker whose ancestors settled in the area before Middletown Township was chartered, resided in historic Jenks Hall since 1946. He deeded the property to the Heritage Conservancy.

The stone house, built in 1734, originally belonged to Thomas Jenks, whose son, Thomas was the first state senator from Bucks County. A native of Moylan, Delaware County, Mr. Walton graduated from the former Media High School at age 16. He earned an engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1936 and became a professional engineer in 1955. He was active with the Walton Byberry Genealogy group, tracing his ancestors to a ship of William Penn's fleet.

He had provided information to the Bucks County Conservancy on an ancestor, Thomas Walmsley, who owned the site now known as Playwicki or the Snodgrass Farm. Among the organizations of which he was a member were the Middletown Township Historic Preservation Commission; the Newtown Historic Association, which he had served as president; Elfreth's Alley Association in Philadelphia; the Welcome Society of Pennsylvania; and the Langhorne Men's Club. He had designed the heating and air-conditioning system to maintain documents and records of the Newtown group at the Court Inn in Newtown Borough. His wife of many years, Donnell DeHaas Dickey Walton, preceded him in death. He is survived by daughters, Kathleen Jimenez and Carolyn Martin; a brother; a sister; and three granddaughters.

Burial was private. The family suggests contributions to the Newtown Historic Association, Court Inn, Court Street and Center Avenue, Newtown, Pa. 18940. Herb Drill's e-mail address is In the Region Frank J. Levonchuck Retired welder, 67 Frank J.

Levonchuck, 67, a retired welder, died Sunday of complications following heart surgery at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo. Before moving to Colorado Springs in 1998, Mr. Levonchuck had been a resident of South Philadelphia, where he was born and raised. He worked as a welder for the old United Steel Barrel Co. of Philadelphia for many years.

He retired about five years ago. Mr. Levonchuck was an Army veteran. He is survived by sons Michael, Frank and Albert; a daughter, Beverly Stock; and six grandchildren. His former wife, Rose, from whom he had been divorced for many years, also survives.
