Fort Myers (Fla.) News-Press, Dec. 27, 1970 3-D fllvmnir far Texas, Ohio State, Shooting for No. Nebraska 1 Ranking of a 30-game winning streak. Texas answers to all those charges. "I can think of a lot of better ways to spend the holidays than trying to defeat Texas' triple option," says Notre Dame's Ara Par-seghian.

"Texas is an awesome team. They come as close to perfection as you can get. Their execution and timing is incredible and their lack of turnovers is unbelievable." The Irish are no slouches, themselves. They posted a 9-1 record and finished second nationally in total offense, 14th in rushing, eighth in passing, ninth in scoring, fifth in total defense and fifth in rushing defense. The Rose Bowl game will mark the last appearance of Ohio State's renowned sophomores of 1968, who capped a perfect season with an impressive defeat of Southern California and O.J.

Simpson in the Rose Bowl. Now seniors, they have won 27 of 28 games, losing only to Michigan last season, a setback they averaged dramatically last month. Thirteen players who started against USC two years ago will be in the opening lineup, including two-time Ail-Americans Jack Tatum and Jim Stillwagon. Stanford's hopes ride on the rifle arm of quarterback Jim Plunkett, the Heisman Trophy winner. But, says Ohio State's Woody Hayes, "our defense can take away a team's favorite play.

We've done it all season. Plunkett will be our greatest challenge, but I have no doubt we'll meet the challenge." The Orange Bowl pairs Nebraska's powerhouse offense, second only to Texas in scoring, against LSU's cat-quick and rock-ribbed defense. NEW YORK, N. Y. -Texas, Ohio State and Nebraska, the Three Musketeers of the 1970 college football season, will be all for one this week No.

1, that is. But unlike the original all-for-one-and-one-for-all trio, this threesome will be hoping fervently that their two rivals for the national championship get nothing but the worst. The remaining eight bowl games not including all-star contests will be played in a six-day period from Monday through Saturday. Unbeaten Toledo of the Mid-American Conference and William Mary's Southern Conference champs square off in the Tangerine Bowl at Orlando, Monday night. Unbeaten Arizona State and North Carolina slug it out Wednesday night in the Peach Bowl at Atlanta while the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl in the Houston As-trodome Thursday night, New Year's Eve, matches Oklahoma and Alabama.

The battle for No. 1 takes place New Year's Day. Top-rated Texas has a rematch with sixth-ranked Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl at Dallas, runnerup Ohio State tackles Stanford in the rose Bowl at Pasadena, and third-ranked Nebraska meets No. 5 Louisiana State under the Orange Bowl lights in Miami. Meanwhile, hoping for a miracle that will see the three leaders all lose, fourth-rated Tennessee takes on the Air Force in the Sugar Bowl at New Orleans.

Finally, on Saturday, Auburn and Mississippi, two Southeastern Conference powers, tangle in the Gator Bowl at Jacksonville, Fla. Miss Board, one of the most popular British track and field girls of modern times, died at the Munich University Clinic after a six-month battle against cancer. The daughter of a London bricklayer was voted Britain's top sportswoman of 1970 but she was too weak to receive the citation. The Cockney girl who was quick to smile even in defeat, narrowly missed a gold medal in the 400 meter event in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, settling for a silver after being edged by Colette Besson of France in the final yards. The greatest victories in her short career came in the 1969 European Games in Athens where she won the 800 meters gold medal, anchored Britain to victory in the 1,600 meters relay and was honored as the outstanding woman competitor. Only last June, a month after her illness was diagnosed, she helped set a world record, running the last leg for the British 3,200 meters women's relay team and anchoring the squad to a record time of 8:28.7 at Edinburgh's Meadowbank Stadium.

She was expected to reach new heights in her career at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in July but illness prevented her from competing. Miss Board, who learned the nature of her illness in early November, sought the aid of Dr. Josef Issels, the controversial exponent of "natural methods" of treating cancer, in a last ditch effort to overcome the disease. "I want to get well again," she said at the time. "I trust Dr.

Issels, and I want to run again." But after minor surgery Wednesday Miss Board slipped into a coma on Christmas Day, never to revive. Fla. Nat'l Guard Sponsor Wrestling Tues. Nile 8:30 p.m. Fort Myers Armory FULLER-GARVIN TO CLASH IN TEXAS DEATH MATCH LOSER MUST LEAVE FLA.

"But the fans always remember the last game and the Orange Bowl will be the final game for this ball-club." Tennessee's defense, which intercepted a national high 36 passes, has its work cut out against the explosive Air Force, which features the aerial thrusts of Bob Parker to Ernie Jennings and the highest scoring 1-2 punch in major college history in tailbacks Brian Bream and Jennings. Hmielewski Leads Orange Bowl Golf MIAMI Iff) Seventeen-year-old Rick Hmielewski of Plantation, fired a two-under-par 69 Saturday to take the first round lead in the Orange Bowl International Junior Golf Tournament. Hmielewski was followed by Jay Brooks of Fort Monmouth, N.J., who carded a 36-34-70. Clustered in the third spot with 71s were Jim Adams, Fayetteville, Craig Stadler, LaJolla, Howard Wills, Columbia, S.C., and Don Kalode, Syracuse, N.Y.

MIAMI (AP) Nebraska and Louisiana State will cheer for the underdogs in New Year's daytime TV football dramas and then hope to fight it out at night in the Orange Bowl for the nation's No. 1 ranking. "No reason we shouldn't be ranked No.

1," said Nebraska Coach Bob Devaney of his 10-0-1 Big Eight champions. "Considering mean schedule we've played, I think we should be put with the best," said LSU's Charlie McClendon, whose Tigers won the Southeastern Conference with a 9-2 season. Big IF Both sides have it figured this way: IF Stanford upsets No. 2 ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl and Notre Dame spills No. 1 rated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, then the Nebraska-LSU winner might get consideration for the top spot.

At the end of the regular season, Nebraska was ranked third and LSU fifth and The Associated Press will conduct its final vote after the post-season events are completed. Rugged Runners Two tough running backs, Joe Orduna and Jeff Kinney, are the centerpieces of the Nebraska offense. The speedy 196-pound Orduna gained 834 yards as the Husker workhorse, averaging 4.5 a carry. Kinney gained 661 and matched the 4.5 clip. Jerry Tagge is a rangy 6-f 1 2 junior quarterback from the football hotbed of Green Bay, who completed 104 of 165 tosses for 1,383 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Tagge's favorite targets are back Johnny Rodges, 35 catches for 665 yards and seven scores, and an elusive Guy Ingles. The 5-foot-9, 158-pound Ingles had 34 recep-tionsor 603 yards and eight TDs. LSU lost a 20-18 shocker to Texas in its season opener, but the Tigers dropped only a classic 3-0 struggle with Notre Dame in the final 10 efforts. The 61-17 plastering of Gator Bowl-bound Mississippi in the season finale helped boost LSU to No. 5.

Bowl Records LSU has a superior bowl past to the Cornhuskers. The Tigers have an 8-6-1 postseason history while Nebraska has dropped five of eight. Tommy Casanova is the most explosive LSU man as a daring punt returner who brought back six kicks for a fat 34-yard average. "This might be one of our best-remembered teams at LSU," said McClendon, "partly because we beat Ole Miss 61-17 and mostly because we led the nation by allowing only 52.2 yards rushing a game." Joining Casanova in the potent LSU defense are bril-liant 219-pound linebacker Mike Anderson, who McClendon said "has to rank with the best anywhere." Offensively, Tigers split their quarterbacking chores between senior Buddy Lee and sophomore Bert Jones. Lee connected on 73 of 138 attempts for 1,162 yards and six touchdowns and Jones hit 52 of 100 for 864 and five scores.

Fine Receiver Lanky 6-foot-3 Andy Hamilton is LSU's banner receiver with 39 catches and a healthy 22-yard average. The junior from Ruston, scored eight touchdowns. Ken Kavanaugh Jr. caught 25 for 318 yards and Gerald Keigley grabbed 16 for 277. On the ground, stocky 5-foot 11 Art Cantrella was a giant for the bengals.

The junior from Larose, gained 892 yards and averaged 3.6, carrying the ball almost as much as the other 13 ball carriers combined at LSU. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., EST, on NBC-TV, but that might be delayed if the Rose Bowl also on NBC-runs long. A sellout crowd of about 80,000 is assured. Canucks' Kurtenbach Out for Six Weeks VANCOUVER (AP) Orlando Kurtenbach, captain of Vancouver Canucks who was injured in a National Hockey League game in Toronto Wednesday night, will be out of action for at least six weeks, it was estimated Saturday. He suffered torn knee ligaments in the game and underwent surgery Thursday.

The Falcons tied Texas Christian in the 1959 Cotton Bowl, then lost to North Carolina in the 1964 Gator Bowl. Vols in Slump Tennessee is 7-10 in bowl competition. The Vols have been bowling three straight years and have lost all three. The potent Falcon attack begins with the passing of quarterback Bob Parker and the receiving of Ernie Jennings and the running of Brian Bream.

Each is the best in Air Force history at his speciality. One-Two Punch Bream scored 120 points and Jennings 114, making them the most prolific one-two punch in college football. Parker completed 18 passes a game and finished fourth in total offense in the nation with an average output of 253 yards. Bream was fifth in the nation rushing and Jennings was fifth in receiving. But the Falcon defense stumbled near the end, yielding 46 and 49 points to Oregon and Colorado in the late-season upsets that were Air Force's only defeats.

Tennessee Leaders Tennessee is led by offensive guard Chip Kell, linebacker Jackie Walker, ful-back Curt Watson, quarterback Bobby Scott and defensive backs Bobby Majors and Tim Priest. One of the Vols most noticeable strengths pass interception may put them in good stead against Air Force. Tennessee intercepts 36 passes and returned them 612 yards, best in the nation, Majors returned 10 for 177 yards and Priest returned nine for 174 yards. against a William and Mary team that lost six of 11 games in 1970. Ealey was the Tangerine Bowl's most valuable player last December when Toledo whipped Davidson and with one season to go has to be one of the nation's most underrated passers.

The Porstmouth, Ohio, boy completed 56 per cent of his attempts in an 11-0 regular season, hitting for 16 touchdowns and throwing only nine interceptions in 253 passes. William and Mary William and Mary earned the bowl bid by winning the Southern Conference and Toledo is making its second straight trip as king of the Mid-American Conference. Ealey will risk a personal streak of 52 consecutive football triumphs 22 at Toledo and 30 back in high school at Portsmouth. If the Toledo offense isn't enough, the pass defense didn't allow 11 opponents a single aerial touchdown until the last second of the last game when Colorado State hit a bomb in a 24-14 game. Leading Total Defense Toledo's impressive figures also include an average of only 6.9 points allowed per game and the nation's leading total defense of 185.8 yards a game.

It's the second straight year the MAC champions have been No. 1 in total defense. William and Mary relies on the quarterbacking of Bubba Hooker and the running of Dennis Cambal and Phil Mosser. Fans in the Tangerine Bowl will see one of college football's biggest "yardage" men on the Indian side But he'll never get on the field legally, at least. Coach Lou Holtz, a rah-rah man to the hilt, paces the sidelines at a brisk pace throughout the game and erupts like a new father anytime scores.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -Both fourth-ranked Tennessee and eighth-ranked Air Force planned heavy practice sessions early this week in preparation for their New Year Day's date in the Sugar Bowl. "We came to New Orleans to win the game though we are also hoping to have a good time," said Tennessee Coach Bill Battle. "But winning is our No. 1 priority." Both teams arrived Saturday, scheduled hard work early in the week with time allotted later for fun and sightseeing Potent Offense The Falcons 9-2 for the season, boast a high-powered offense averaging 424 yards and 32 points a game.

But the Air Force defense has been questionable. Tennessee, meanwhile, was more balanced in posting a 10-1 record. The Vols had the best record in the conference although they didn't win the championship. Air Force Coach Ben Martin said his Falcons practiced in earnest four days last week after having final examination the previous week and working out individually primarily "to maintain our level of condition." Christmas Break The Falcons took off two days for Christmas. "The break shouldn't hurt us," said Martin.

"We should have stayed in good shape. We can work out the Christmas dinners in New Orleans." Air Force and Tennessee have never played each other and Air Force has never been in the Sugar Bowl.
